Done - Sharp worked.

F*ck me how long I've waited for someone else to see that Done and Sharp worked!! YES he doesnt score, but he works his socks off an creates pressure up top that Sharp has been exploiting. I see why we wanted to try out Lavery, Clarke and McNulty but for gods sake lets go back to Done and Sharp, and bring Wright back.
thanks.

We could all see it, we're just drowned out by the likes of Pinchy not understanding the concept of team games, Cerberus trolling, and the inevitable idiot pointing out that Chesterfield have a Welshman that used to play for us in every single thread.

Oops

Yes Done doesn't score. But the partnership just worked. How many teams have two goal machines up top?

By far the best football has been played with those two up top. Goals flowed, chances a plenty were created.

Think about that.

Agreed.

And Sharp and McNulty are too similar to be partnered together (and the former is a lot better player than the latter).

I can understand if there was a need to rest Lavery last night (he's started a few games in a row for the first time in the season or could have a slight injury) but starting McNulty ahead of Done makes absolutely no sense to me.

Yes, they certainly did.

Not sure you can turn it round once you've been designated scapegoat in chief though.

For whatever reason the Done and Sharp partnership works rather well.

That said the Lavery and Sharp is gelling as well. Ideally I would start with Lavery and bring on Done later in a match.

Despite my reservations of us signing Hanson, I think a Done and Hanson partnership could work in the last 20 minutes of a match.
I think I'd tend to start Done, to tire the defence out, then Lavery to finish them off.

I'm not sure how we'll use Hanson yet, I think it might depend on who we're playing, or who will be the best playing off him.

Yeah, you are probably right there. I thought about it some more after I posted.

Don't really think we ought to be fetishising Matt Done & see him as the answer to all our problems.

In terms of stats:

  • Since he got dropped (if you discount the fiasco yesterday, for arguments sake), we've scored 11 goals in 5 games - 2.2 goals/game.
  • Taking the period between Done being installed up top alongside Billy (the Oxford game) until his last game before getting dropped (Northampton), we scored 40 goals in 19 games - 2.1 goals/game.

Which suggests, scoring-wise, we're OK with him, we're OK without him (in fact, the scoring rate's been impressive whether or not Done plays up front).

But reinstating Done now would be a backward step (IMO). Chris clearly believes we're capable of scoring even more (2.5/game? even 3/game?), given the amount of chances we usually create. But no doubt he's right in thinking that, to do so, we'll need someone up top alongside Billy who can actually contribute.

Consistently best strike partner for Billy is Done.

Drops Done and plays him at left back.

Best centre half at the club gets injured, doesn't bring him back when he's fit despite looking incredibly poor at the back without him.

Just as a matter of interest, do you know how many goals we've conceded with Done in/out the team? One of the things he does is defend from the front, not giving defenders time to pick passes and therefore snubbing out attacks before they start. I'm not saying it makes a huge difference to goals conceded but it does help.

Good point. Goals per game conceded has clearly gone up dramatically (&, of course, the goals per game conceded was worse during that early season period too, prior to the Oxford game).

Done up front - 16 goals conceded in 19 games (i.e. 0.84/game)
Goals conceded in the 5 games since (before the Fleetwood game) - 9 conceded in 5 (1.8/game), which is definitely unsustainable for a promotion-seeking side.

Can the dramatic change be put down to Matt Done not playing? To a large degree, no. We've got caught repeatedly on the break (Walsall), not been able to cope with long-throws (Gillingham), etc.

In saying that though he does set the tone more than anyone else, in terms of the pressing game.

Definitely a factor for me, even if not a main one. He stops counter attacks before they start, on occasion. We're being hit on the counter. I think the team as a whole has stopped the high pressing game, which has allowed teams to break on us.

Not sure he stops counter attacks but definitely inspires others to work harder
