Done at left wing back

My issue with Done at Left Wing back is that when we have the ball he's too deep. It seriously winds me up big time. Push up onto the full back and when the ball is on the opposite flank, get in the fecking box.

I can't tell you how angry this makes me!!!!!

I said this in the Lafferty thread that I started. Done wasn't attacking properly as he looked nervous about having to do his defensive duties.
Playing LM in a 4-4-2 is one thing, but tracking back in that formation is to help out the LB just by 'being there'. In a 3-5-2 you have to be adequate at both attack and defence, Done can't do the latter unfortunately.

Where's Hussey?

You've hit the nail on the head. He tries really hard but can't tackle, rushes in when he should hold back and regularly gets caught out of position.

His pace means he can get back but not there in terms of marking, tackling and positioning. A Wing Back needs to be at least a decent defender.

It just shows that he has no natural attacking instinct. You would think as a striker he would be desperate to get in the box. It's amazing that a fullback like Lafferty gets into the box more from that position than a 'striker'

also fixed your post :)

You can see it for the their first goal. He was all over the shop. Having said that it was a horror show by everyone involved.

Done was incredibly weak and all over the place for their 2nd in the build up to the thrown in. Average at best striker and very poor at lwb, even if it isn't his preferred position. Wilder got that wrong yesterday, Riley needs to start there Tuesday. Now as for the rest of the back 5:eek:

We struggled last season with playing players out of position. Square pegs in round holes.

On CWs arrival he clearly stated Done was never a LWB and Basham was not a centre back but a midfielder.

Heh Presto we roll up yesterday with exactly that !! Square pegs and all that.

Done has spent the majority of his career at either left back or left midfield. He only changed to Striker a few years ago and had a hot patch, I don't mind him upfront because like it or not he's a good foil for Billy, but I don't want him in a position of responsibility.

I think Wilder might have thought that he could 'get away' with playing Done again today because of the lowly opposition and he wanted to give Lafferty a few more days.

He probably planned to let Riley have a good look at how we played, and then bring him on for the last half hour if the game was going to plan. Personally I'd have hooked Done after their first goal and brought Riley on anyway. He can't possibly be any worse than Done defensively, and he's supposed to be a real attacking threat out wide.

In theory, Done should be a great asset to come off the bench with 20 minutes left and give tiring defences no peace or respite. It's worth noting that often when he comes on he's not replacing a central striker, but as an extra attacking player. Without the licence to do what he's best at.

Hope the inference of your post is right Gray. Riley is supposed to be one of the next MU protege's who will be given his chance at first team level. Surely he's not been brought here as an option that might get a chance of playing? Clearly, many MU supporters regard Riley as a good player, so I hope Wilder does as you suggest and gets him on sooner rather than later. There's no place for sentiment where decision making is concerned, especially at this point in the season. If the young man is good enough to be considered as one for the future at MU, he's clearly good enough for us now.

Yes I think so mate. I'd heard from a couple of ManU fans and also read from a few different sources that Riley's main strength lies in the attacking side of his game. There was even a debate as to if he should be an out and out winger and wondered if that's how Wilder might use him.

Of course if he's as good as some say, he'll probably be way better than Done defensively as well, but I was just making the point that he could have given us some pace and width going forward wide left.

Your point is more than worth consideration. Losing ground now shouldn't be an option, so tough decisions are the order of the day. Those who don't deliver need reminding of what's expected. Wilder's interview yesterday should be a reminder that there are expectations, and that if those expectations aren't returned then quick and decisive action is called for. Wilder did well to secure Riley, now let's get him bedded in the side to add a different dimension to our performance.
