Does Pre season count for anything?

Win, lose, good opposition, poor, win or lose?

It don't seem to to me.

Like we said before... we had an unbeaten preseason in 2007. And then an absolutely shit season.

I don't think the results matter, but I think you should play against teams with a variation of standard.

I've not liked this pre-season playing against nobody higher than League Two, I'd have preferred to see us have a real test.

I don't think it counts for much really. Didn't we lose to Matlock the pre-season before we got promoted to the Premiership.

I think all it counts for is to try a few players out, and build match fitness. I don't particularly agree that playing a high standard of teams counts for much. You could play Real Madrid first team and get spanked, which is bad for morale. OR play a Real Madrid reserve side and get spanked which is REALLY bad for morale. A "big" team is more likely to play reserves which kind of defeats the object. However a "smaller" club is more likely to field a strong team in the hope of taking a scalp.
Having said that I think we're a bit of an unknown quantity going into this season. Not too sure how we'll go on against Boro, but I'd rather play a relegated side away than a promoted side at home for the first game of the season.

Pre-season, to me, is about getting the players match fit and a smaller team would give a more intense game IMO as they'd be trying to get a scalp, and as mentioned earlier a bigger team could be more inclined to be playing a reserve team.

Morale may seriously drop as well though if you have results such as .....

Full Strength Leyton Orient 6 Full Strength Newcastle Deludeds 1 ;)

well we would not have got france from the pigs had he not performed well in pue season

The sheffield club game made up KB's mind that sharp is not good enough

Its also made up KB's mind that 4 trialist keepers are not good enough

other than that .........

I've been looking around Sky Sports, and have noticed alot of good friendlies going off. And teams around the same position ourself or in the championship playing a premiership team or some decent european team...
Then i look at our friendlies and think... Lincoln?..Bury?.. Why don't we have any decent friendlies that will test our potential and hopefully shead a slight bit of light on the season ahead and also on how the squad is looking... It really confused me, and that is more than likely the reason we have good results in pre-season, because there against average teams in lower divisions.

maybe it boosts confidence

That's exactly what i was thinking, that it boosts confidence of us winning against them sort of teams so we have more of the ball against them and we can see more on our attacking areas and see what our style of play will be with the new lads that have come in and settle them into our team a lot easier than premiership teams or european teams when it'll be harder to play against them.

I agree that we should play some friendlies to work on this, but as I said to SF at the Lincoln match the other day, the defence hasn't been tested all the way through pre-season.

All we need is 1 game against opposition that will test our defence, and we've not really had that.
