Does anyone remember this tournament from years ago?
I remember going to Blades v St.Mirren,probably late 70's/early 80's,and Dundee i think.

Yes I went to both long trips for a night match
Remember Dundee being strange due to the closeness of the 2 grounds

Yep, we played it in from 75-6 to 80-81 and were generally shit at it. It always started with a round robin 4 team tournament before the start of the season and we were always eliminated at that stage, except for 79-80, which is the season to which you refer.

That season, we had 3 1-0 victories over Mansfield, Cambridge and Notts County, which got us into the quarter final where we played Dundee over 2 legs. We won 2-1 at home and 1-0 away and got in the semi against St Mirren. We drew 0-0 at home, but crashed 0-4 away with Steve Conroy breaking his arm, which led to the signing of the great Derek Richardson.

I have a distant memory of playing both Dundee teams at the Lane in the same year, winning the first game and losing the 2nd 3-0? The noise they made at that 2nd game was incredible but I was in the stand above them and couldn't see how many were there.

Great nights but not as good as the infamous Bassett incident in the Anglo Italian......

We played Dundee United in the Texaco Cup in 73-4 (H D0-0 A L0-2) and Dundee in 79-80 (H W2-1 A W1-0).

We have never otherwise played either of the Dundee teams in a competitive game.

Was at a couple of those games , remember some jocks being in the JSS and getting cries of Argentina , after Ali didnt win the world cup ..

Them games against Oldham were sound if only for the bollocks:)

I went in with the away fans in the semi final at the Lane. I can still remember their chant which sounded like "we are the Paisley, the Paisley Semern"

Aug 7 H Newcastle L0-1

I remember this for a massive brawl in the kop at the bottom corner. The geordies in the kop, about 10 of them, had to jump over the little wall into the Junior Blades 'pen' where we were stood. There was a photo the next day in one of the Sunday red tops showing the geordies trying to pull one of their mates over the wall by his trousers as punches rained down on him from the Blades in the kop.

What about the Anglo-Italian Cup?

I seem to remember losing about 4-0 to Udinese (Ooodinees on the Tannoy) and having half the team sent off.

We lost 2-1 and had 3 players sent off (Hartfield, Hodges and Blake) and Bassett was sent from the touch line.

I remember that. Despite the low attendance it was one of the biggest brawls I have ever seen. Police and St John's were busy that afternoon

Thing is, the police opened the gate to the terrace from the pen and let the geordies walk through and watch the match from there. They just stood chatting and having a laugh with the older, more sensible Blades in the terrace and just got on with it without any further hint of bother.

So the keeper gets injured in a micky mouse cup and a poor keeper replaces him. Am i right that Benstead and Booker got a red in 88 89 away in a micky mouse v Bristol Rovers?

They got reds in the Sherpa Van game at Wrexham on 17/1/89, Benstead's after the final whistle.

I always remember the Blades playing the Mardy Geordies on my Brothers wedding day in September 1973 and they put all the windows through of the old Minerva Tavern opposite the Roebuck.
Tasty in them days.

Chesterfield won the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1981, with an aggregate win over Notts County, and kept it. It was so embarrassing for the Scots that Rangers were thrashed by a Third |Division side in the quarter-final that they decided they didn't want to take part in it any more so the Cup stayed at Saltergate.

Incidentally, unlike Wednesday last year, the Chesterfield supporters did not join in with the Rangers fans' sectarian songs.

Not really no. I vaguely remember something called the "Group Cup", never went to a game but i remember being on holiday at skeggy and trying to find out the score of it. Probably about 6 years old and i'm asking total strangers if they know the results from some stupid competition nobody has ever heard of! Come to think of it, i don't think i ever heard of it again. Maybe i'm imagining it? o_O

The Group cup was the successor to the ASC after the Scottish clubs withdrew on the basis of the "low quality" of the Emglish entrants (given that the Scots had only won one of 6 competitions and, as noted above, third division Chesterfield had beaten Rangers in 80-81 that was a bit of a strange justification).

The Group Cup had its one and only season in 81-82. As with the ASC it started off with pre-season groups of 4 and 4th Division United were the underdogs in their group with second division Grimbsy and third division Doncaster and Chesterfield. Our results were as follows:

15/8/81 H Doncaster W2-1 (Charles, Hatton)
18/8/81 A Grimbsy L0-2
21/8/81 A Chesterfield D1-1 (Trusson)

And we were eliminated. Grimbsy went on to win it I believe.

The competition was resurrected the next season and called the Football League Trophy. Again we went out early:

14/8/82 H Grimbsy L1-3 (Kenworthy pen)
17/8/82 A Scunthorpe D0-0
21/8/82 A Lincoln L1-3 (Edwards)

Minerva Tavern later to become The Bar Rio now that boozer livened up Sunday nights in those days.
