Would prefer automatic but as that seems unlikely I'd rather not have to live through the stress of playoffs. When we have ended the season with promotion already in the bag, life in early summer has always been more pleasant.

Yes but worried where the goals are going to come from & if we get the same ref as vs Bournemouth we’re fooked!

I assumed we all did, but having spoken to relatives/neighbours of an older generation, surprised how many prefer to not get promoted. I'm wondering whether the slightly tepid atmosphere at Bramall Lane also maybe reflects that some fans aren't desperate to go back up?

Sheffield United is about the only club in the world that has supporters who dont want to go up.

You have to build a successful club over years , to do this you need income & investment, so get this the you need to getting the revenue from the PL . This might mean yo-yoing between the PL / Championship but hopefully providing the cash is reinvested in building the team / club you build solid footings for the club going forward .
The problem is the gap in quality between the two divisions is now a chasm , last season was a tough watch , but Norwich & Watford had same issues . Leeds would probably with them also but look like they’ve done enough to survive after manager change . I think whoever goes up will more likely come straight back down , but you have to build on this . My main concern is that if we don’t get up this season , the recent statements from the board don’t give me any confidence they are going to do this . I don’t think we’ve signed anyone in the last 3 windows & turned in a £9M profit . Two ways you can look at that I suppose when says well done for keeping your books in order , other that’s cash that could have been used wisely to strengthen the team ?
I know one thing if we don’t go up it’s gone be an ‘interesting ‘ summer , as the loan players will return to there parent clubs , I think we’ll get offers on a few of a better players that are on higher wages & I’d imagine the board will cash in . Hecky apparently had a meeting with Bettis & the club are looking at free transfers & lower division players with potential, nothing wrong with that if it’s backed up with some solid signings also .. sadly I can’t see it .. get that wrong and we could be at the other end of the table very quickly .
So yes absolutely should be going for promotion regardless of future outcomes ⚔️⚔️⚔️
