Dirty West Brom

Refs have been instructed to let the game flow and this is the Championship not the soft as shit Premier League so we better get used to it and man up fast. Yeah West Brom are very direct and in your face but you can't say they were dirty, good footballing teams will deal with it more often than not WBA will not get away with it in the Premier League. Not the style of football I like to watch but it works for them, not a fan of tippy tappy passing either I'd prefer a team to mix it up.
I don't like to see this bollocks of passing goal kicks out to defenders in the penalty box either, not seen any stats but I reckon a fair percentage of our possession was in our own penalty box we couldn't beat their press so still ended up launching long high balls towards Billy. The days of us being a physical side are long gone apart from in the minds of Premier League fans. We hardly put a tackle in last night never mind a foul.

We did exactly the same with Zaha
They use it to their own advantage, like villa did with Grealish. Funny how they manage to stay on their feet in their half of the pitch.
I could have sworn that Emile Heskey had roller skates on when he was at Liverpool, he was never on his feet when they were attacking...

Me, I mentioned it to the neutral I watched it with. We didn't adapt to it though and, again, it should have been abundantly clear had we done any form of homework on West Brimledon.
That’s my biggest concern. It looked like the management team had no idea how West Brom were going to play. It’s like they think we’re still playing friendlies and they just wanted to give players a run out.

Our defensive organisation was wank. Set pieces, the basics. Have we done anything on the training ground? If you want to change from a 3 to a 2, players need to be coached. It didn’t look like they had been.

Strikers - the two players least likely to take advantage of a high line.

I’m not going to go on because it’s been done to death but, fuck me, I get that we had a messed up pre-season but that’s no excuse for not setting a team up to expose your opponents obvious weaknesses. I appreciate that we could still turn it around but right now, it has the appearance of a fucking omnishambles. It’s the same shit as the Adkins season, manager expected to manage the existing players, manager doesn’t seem in any way prepared, either for what the opponents are trying to do or what his own players are capable of, baffling decisions and all the appearance of someone new to the job.

Its interesting the number of new coaching roles, that clubs are hiring, especially in the cash rich PL, coach for throw ins, read something today about a club having a specific coach for substitutes

Marginal gains. How many times have you seen teams, including us, lose possession from throw ins? It’s always pissed me off.

Similarly, how often do you see a sub come on and struggle to get up to speed? Some are brilliant at it, Freeman was quite impressive last night but others aren’t. I don’t know if that can be coached but if it can, it should be.

Remember the Dean Saunder throw in off the keepers back, my dad had been going on about a similar move for decades before that, instead of facing your team mate at a throw in, you turn your back, block your marker, throw hits your back and bounces back to the taker, can only assume it was a thing in the 50/60s, never seen it on old tv clips though

We are a soft touch and we need a centre mid who harasses the opposition and sticks the odd late tackle on the opposition. Others have said it, but if not why not sign this man!?

I know Sky were wetting themselves over West Brom last night, but chuck a decent goalkeeper and a proper dominant centre half leader into our team and that's three of the goals stopped.

That said I have no qualms with how WBA played last night, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a team being aggressive.

The problem is, I would imagine, training is probably focused on the new style of play and formation(sss) we seem to be trying out. The starting line-up, the defensive setup, pretty much everything smacked of piss poor preparation.

I hope we see some stronger refs allowing all kinds of time to allow players into our box while wiping every throw in with a towel is ridiculous. He let too much go and WBA had the ref sussed.

The WBA players matched their manager's aggression and intensity last night.
Unfortunately for us, our players did the same.
I watched Slav's reaction to the 3rd and 4th goals. No emotion whatsoever. Stood there with his hands on his hips for 90 minutes pretty much. No passion from the dugout was matched by no passion on the pitch.

I think that's the current plan. Write off these first few games while Slav and his team experiment, while gradually introducing his tactics. In a couple of games time it'll all click (with a couple of additions) and we'll fucking smash someone. Peterborough at home. YHIHF

So why did the ref blow for a foul every time we tried to rough West Brom up?

They bullied us physically and also had more technical skill. They also had more athletic players and a more fluid style with the ball on th deck. They were also better at route 1. Their goalkeeper is much better than ours, as well as their full backs. Aside from one scare our strikers didn't worry their centre halves all night. Their midfield embarrassed ours, royally. We couldn't get near them. Up front they had players that had confidence and that actually moved around a bit.

We've let our team age, they haven't, ironically and without trying to sound obsessed, (with Robinson deal) they've took the young blood we signed for our future off us while we let our main strikers get a few more years on thier backs..

Well we have our management team calm and quiet and the West Brom manager and staff screaming and bouncing about like maniacs so go figure. The ref was weak he should have red carded Ismael for that outburst when he was pointing and screaming at him, all part of the intimidation Barnsley were the same last season.

Almost right, but they didn't break in at night and steal Robinson, a certain someone decided he either didn't fit the system, didn't have a role or didn't fit in with the group.

Completely agree, and we didn't have anyone on the pitch to put pressure on the ref, pointing out another foul had been committed, like the previous one, or question him on anything

Felt like I'd got botty burgled when I saw that transfer go through...

Edit: I think he'd have pissed top scorer that season..for us

Agreed every time their CB's went through Billy Sharp we just accepted it any other team would be surrounding the ref as soon as play stopped.

I know all the focus has been on our woeful display last night, but I thought it was worth mentioning West Brom's IMO overly aggressive approach. Body checking, off the ball incidents, potential ankle breakers and a manager on the touchline ready to Hulk out at any moment. No wonder the ref let them get away with everything, he was intimidated by them.

A stronger team than us wouldn't have put up with half of their antics either. Swansea defenders tried a bit of it with a degree of success and I worry every side we face now will be told to rough us up as we are a soft touch. We are screaming out for at least one aggressor in the side for this level if we want to avoid being bullied all the way down to League 1. I know Baldock tries but really he's just like a yapping small dog that's all bark and no bite. Another reason we miss JOC so badly.

PS - The Baggies may well get promoted playing this way, but they will come straight back down with a bump as they will be giving free kicks away every two seconds in the Prem.
You have hit nail on head in that United were bullied too easily, we're too nice as mentioned BOBL that was a carnage we need players that that rough up the oppositions flair players, but no we stand back and there you go fucking hit them hard as well. not sure how old you are mate but have a look at some video's from 70's when they really tackled, and fouls weren't given unlike today.

It's about time refs let games flow instead of blowing for falling over own boots, the Euro's the refs let games flow it was so much better.
