Dirtiest Players

Vinnie Jones, Keith Kettleborough and Brian Richardson from the Blades.

The dirtiest player I ever saw was a nasty cunt called Jeff Whitehead. If memory serves, he started at Manure but didn't quite make it for them and was sold to Forest.

He perfected a technique whereby he would kick the ball away but at the same time ' accidentally ' follow through and stud the player challenging him. I remember a match against them in the mid 60's at the Lane when after only about 15 mins. we had three players hobbling around clutching their knees ( one of them was Woody ) all due to this and, at that point, he hadn't had a single foul given against him !!

Nasty, sly bastard of a player. I don't know how his career ended but, without coming over all TD, I hope it wasn't in a pleasant way.
Jeff Whitefoot

Controversial choice: Paul Scholes. Got away with any number of bad challenges because he could play a bit (well more than a bit TBF).
Similarly: Johnny Giles. Nasty but subtle with it, unlike his partner-in-crime Bremner.
Graeme Souness: have a look at this one:

I love the way he complains about his ripped sock just after trying to main someone!
Bryan Robson: By the end of his career all he could do was kick people. See also Charlie Adam.
Kevin Muscat: No-mark Aussie thug.
Roy Keane: If he couldn't beat you by fair means, then he'd resort to foul ones instead.
Alan Shearer: Although he does get let off slightly for triggering a Roy Keane "meltdown" and then laughing in his face.

From what I remember of Bremner he was just a mouthy little twat, good player but full of verbal. I reckon first prize would be between Chopper Harris and Tommy smith, although that’s probably because those two were household names. Back in those days there would have been many others just like Harris and Smith, just not as well known.

Peter Storey and Chopper Harris must be in the running.

And to attach some United relevance to this, I give you Billy Whitehurst.

Some more Bremner bashing, this time Eddie McCready. Not even a free kick says the ref :)

“Chopper Pugh” of Sheffield Wednesday was a dirty sod. Kept his underwear on for a fortneet at a time and then turned them inside out and went another week in them apparently.

Sorry, had a quick scan through but couldn't see any Sheffield United players on the list.
Am I looking in the right section?!
In answer to your question though. Roy Keane.
Not a hard player, just a dirty player who seemed intent on taking his anger/frustration out on others.
. I’ll give you some. whithurst, Jones, Hockey and Brian Richardson.

Doesn’t look quite so hard or tough here does he?

Agreed he was a dirty little twat though

This was Dave Mackay come back after two broken legs, in the first minute Bremner went over the ball and kicked him hard on his bad leg.

Mackay was not best pleased as you can tell. Scotland teammates too.

The Birmingham team of the mid80s - Noel Blake, Tony Coton, Pat van den Hauwe, Robert Hopkins, Howard Gayle, Mick Harford – they were a handy bunch. Hard or dirty - take your pick, but they were the original “win or lose, we’re on the booze” crew.
As were the Pompey team around the same time,Blake,Billy Gilbert,Mick Tait, Kevin Dillon,Mick Kennedy to name a Few..

Brian who played for us in the late 1950s and early 1960s. My dad said he was a real hard man. Brian is one of the only 4 regular players from the 1960-61 team that is still alive. The others are Gerry Summers, Billy Russell and Billy Hodgson

I remember Brian Richardson well. Yes, he was hard but I'd never describe him as dirty. For me, dirty players are those who have no qualms about deliberately injuring an opponent a la Roy Keane etc.

Brian wasn't like that but he did put 100 per cent into every tackle, as did many others in those days and Blades fans loved him for that.
