I wonder if we aren't missing a role a bit like the above.
I honestly believe the board need an advisor who knows the club and obviously knows football.
Not someone to threaten NC or whoever the manager is but someone in between.
Kevin Mcabe is a very busy man , Jim Phipps etc are new to football . There have been way too many " goings off " this season and if it is NC next season I think his stubbornness and the way he deals with things will mean there are more ! I can't believe the board don't want answers to many questions .
My view is that with NC, his bro as scout and personal connections to MD of the club they won't get straight answers.
Someone in between would get straight answers .

I have mentioned and thought about this before . Clough to me definitely requires some help . Sadly i cannot see it happening , due to Clough wanting total control , and would see it , as a go , at his management style and of his chief scout , in decision making.

The board are not daft when somebody is spending there money unwisely , also it may well be the funders , in the background who have a say . Funders i deal with get rid of CEO , MD , and guys at the top , so Clough , Brannigan ,may well not be as safe , as we all think they are .

Everything that Jim said indicates that the Prince takes his investment very seriously. He'll want to look after his money.

Hmmm. Did the head scout get called into Phipps office to explain why Weir had us near the bottom of the league?

I actually think Clough himself would make a good director of football. He's very good at stabilising a club and putting things in place to allow a club to be successful (both Burton and Derby are benefiting from his foundations), but is lacking in the day to day football management departments such as man management and tactics.

Good shout , and a lot of truth and sense in that . I think you have come up with a workable winning formula.

Who would be the manager - Young ex Derby player no doubt.:D

Mmmmm.....I kind of get the idea behind what's being suggested. It reminds me of someone enquiring into the management structure at Old Trafford when Ferguson ruled. Asked about the need for a club psychologist, Ferguson drew upon his many years of experience and proclaimed, "I am the club psychologist!". It all depends on the club, the structure, what's needed, permitted and so on. Ferguson kept a tight ship, wouldn't tolerate lines being crossed, and anyone who thought they could take him on were shown the door. Ask Jaap Stam.

I find it interesting that as the question of players being disgruntled has arisen, suddenly a conclusion is drawn that Clough is lacking something. Who better to compare against than Ferguson himself? If ever a manager crossed swords with players it was that man. Remember, this was the man, regarded by some as one of the best managers around, who let Paul Pogba leave because Pogba felt as if he'd been treated poorly. Yet now, Pogba is rated as a £70 million player chased by Europe's finest.

If Clough redefines himself next season, bringing the club the success we all crave, I wonder how he'll be interpreted then? Maybe he'll fall flat on his arse, in which case he'll part company with the club, to which there won't be many tears shed I imagine. But should he achieve promotion, maybe it'll be part of his learning curve, or whatever description you choose to apply. I hope he does well, not because I have a 'thing' for Clough, but because if he succeeds so do SUFC.

Director of Football is someone you bring in when the chips are down and the manager has lost confidence (with a view that the incoming manager will already know that one is at the club, and presumably not have a problem with it), no? Not totally against the idea, but I don't think now is the right time, both for that reason, and also because recruiting a decent manager in this division is hard enough without wanting to put potential candidates off by having someone hold their hand. Surely this is something you implement during (a blip in) the good times? Thing is, even when that does happen (or has happened, thinking about other teams) they often backtrack when they find themselves wanting a manager who refuses to work with a DoF a year or two down the line.

I always thought their best role was signing off transfers, not so much making the big transfer decisions (i.e. the American style GM role) but more making sure incoming transfers fit a club philosophy so WHEN (not if) the manager walks/is sacked/retires/etc there isn't an entire rebuild of players along with a new manager. Which is something we've been guilty of in recent years. Someone who can a better deal for us in transfers (in and out, although particularly out tbh!), and not put stupid fucking clauses in player contracts that let our best player and future England international walk for £2 mil, would be ideal.

Why a DoF?

Can't the manager recruit wisely?

So what is the real need ?

I thought Mal Brannighan did some of the things a DOF would do?

Clough & his brother gave MB a list of players who they wanted & then MB went out & bought them.

And also would it not be another wage we would have to pay. And probably a large wage too.

Clough calls the shots. There'll be no way he'll accept a DOF to interfere in his meticulous Derby player recruitment!
