Howdy all. I may have let one completely slip the net but when was the last time we scored a direct free kick? The last one I can personally remember was Fleck vs the fowls but even that one was rolled a bit before it was struck!

Seen this asked a few times on here, but I'm not sure where the obsession with scoring from... looking at the stats from this seasons Premier league only 17 of the 825 goals scored so far came directly from free kicks (2%). Newcastle have scored 4, Southampton 3, 10 teams once and 8 haven't scored any. The 8 teams who have scored 0 direct free kicks include Manchester City.

They look great when they are scored, but I wouldn't exactly say it's an issue we need to address urgently...

My issue is its a great opportunity to have a crack at goal and we always seem to choose something tippy tappy or a crossing option if it's in a 50 50 position. Surely there's one footballer in the squad that likes a free kick?!

The last one I can remember or sticks in my mind was by Stephen Quinn. Top left corner just outside the area ( Kop end) , absolute belter. No idea of the game or even season.

Probably a different one but the only direct free kicks that immediately spring to mind, struck as proper dead balls are this one

and the Michael Tonge one at Hillsborough

Very similar strike but 100% into the Kop end plus a tad nearer the penalty area. Remember saying at the time, " nobody scores on the edge of the box" but what did I know🤣. Nice to see that though👍

About 15 seconds in on this video?

I had a season ticket that year and didn't miss a game so must have seen it but clearly didn't live long in the memory! All overshadowed by a miserable trip to Wembley.

I would have thought post all these its be Hose Baxter? Can't think of one mind directly

I do find it disappointing that not one of our players even look like they can bend a ball up and over a wall. I think that is poor for players, many of whom fall in the experienced category, can't do it. Norwood is undoubtedly the most likely but every time we get a free kick now I start to laugh as Fleck and Norwood get together as if they have some kind of master plan. Hands go up with some magic sign only for the free kick seemingly always avoiding our players by a mile. Some of the recent ones have been absolutely woeful, flying out of play with not a cat in hell's chance of anybody getting anywhere near it. Do any of them practice? Then you watch de Bruyne! An exception I know. Our midfield contribution to scoring is minimal too. Ok, Berge has had a recent golden patch by getting in the box but generally the midfield players never make runs in the box and rarely shoot from outside the box. We can't expect Baldock to hit wonder goals every week bu a few decent efforts might help.

Baxter's free kick v Oldham on Boxing Day 2013 is still fresh in my memory. What a strike that was.
I remember two Baxter free kicks, the one against Oldham which almost burst the net and the one at Fulham that landed in the Thames

James Beattie scored those 2 screamers in a week against Burnley away on the Saturday then pigs at home on the Tuesday

That's the one I remember,I was in the upper tier and it seemed to take forever but you could see it was in all the way

I can only remember Hourihane or Norwood having a crack from one this season. Surely MGW or Ndiaye have some talent in this area?
