Isn't his contract up at the end of June? I can only assume he's off if he still hasn't signed

yeah think it is. but hope the club have had a word with him to try and change his mind now NA is manager
I'd hope so too. He's probably off on his hols not worry about it at the moment though

There was a new contract offer made to him in May I believe. He's probably waiting to see what drops out before signing or otherwise.

My guess is Adkins being manager gives us a better chance of retaining him. Awful lot of fuss over a bloke that has scored one goal though.

He is gonna sign his new deal. From a board member about 3 weeks ago!

I said it before and I'll say it again, if he signs I wish him the best if he leaves then so what. I want all of our players to succeed as I do all of our managers. I'm happy to be proved wrong and hope he is the greatest talent ever unearthed. I just hope the eternal wankfest over him proves to be worth it.

I never offered my opinion on him, let alone a "wankfest" . Purely answering the question asked .

I hope he stays because he looks like a real talent and has been massively underestimated by NC in my opinion.

Told exactly the same yesterday . However if its true , he has to prove himself after the hype he has had , both good and bad . You never know , the ready made strike force , Diego and Higdon . Dafter things have happened . Also it would save us a lot of brass , which could be spent on them 2 CB players we desperately need.

What on earth is "ready-made" about Diego? Really?

If we go into next season with a front two of Higdon and De Juve: Worry! We're going nowhere.

By the way, it's not for United to try to persuade young one-goal to stay. He's been offered a contract: he turned it down. Let him ask the club to be generous enough to renew the offer, if he wants to stay.

"Ready Made " tongue in cheek Pinchy . Lighten Up.

You don't know , I don't know , if it will work or even be tried out . The man who will have the say , is Adkins and his coaching staff . Dafter things do happen , and it is worth a punt IMO .

What is it about this multi-talented prodigy that has been under-estimated? It seems to me to be quite the opposite. A grand total of no (zero, nil, less than one) goals in his last ten lower league appearances at York and Northampton and his acolytes are banging the drum again! He's keeping the "real talent" well hidden, isn't he?

Sounds suspiciously like "hugely over-rated" to me...

Yes , and agree . The young fella should be asking the club , can he reconsider the offer already on the table .

Adkins may well then give him a trial ( with Higdon up front ):D

I thought we were serious about a promotion push, next season? To do so, we need more goals. I would have thought having a 'punt' on a failure from last season and a novice who has yet to score a league goal for us and previous few at the lower level, is pretty close to the last thing we want to be doing.

You say "we don't know" but we've got some pretty persuasive evidence. A lad who gets none in ten in league two and has NEVER scored a league one goal ain't gonna set league one alight in a hurry; neither is a half-fit, immobile striker who hasn't played at all for months! The omens are not good, are they?...

There's a chap called Matt Done who might wonder why on Earth he should be down the pecking order from those two; he'd be right to do so. We need at least one new striker every bit as much as we need at least two new centre-backs.

I'll eat my complete set of the works of Charles Dickens if those two start the season as first-choices. I shall also worry about NA's sanity. Happily he's not as crazy as some of our fans and it simply won't happen.

Difficult to form an opinion on the lad or whether I'm bothered about him staying. I haven't seen anything from him yet and that is of course mainly due to his lack of first team opportunities. I still can't help asking myself the question that if he is as good as the hype suggests wouldn't he have been playing regularly?

I know Clough was somewhat odd with his team selections at times but if the lad is as good as some people say no manager could have refused to play him for so long.

Could it be that hereached his full potential rather early ,and has not improved as much as he thinks he has?.

And that part of my post wasn't in response to what you wrote, more the general "oh my god Diego might leave, what will we ever do" fiasco that surrounds him.

if the offer is withdrawn he can go for free !! .Clough obviously rated him or he wouldnt have been offere
a new contract, clough,s gone now but i think he was trying to get diego to put more effort in to the parts of his game he seems to think dont matter. If he accepts the contract Atkins will exactly the same as there is no room in the game today for lazy strikers in other words get his finger out and work hard at his weakspots in his game.
I for one and any blade worth his salt would want diego to make it but his work ethick has to improve drematically
Matty Done is a great example.

I am sure that Nigel Adkins will address any 'weakspots' in the spelling of his own name and then move on to the enigma that is Diego.

No room for lazy strikers? I wouldn't have minded Berbatov at the Lane.

If I recall, a contract offer was made as a form of compensation protection. There are far savvier brains than mine who'll know the ins and outs of why Clough offered an agreement, but that's my understanding.

Now, who's this Atkins you refer to?

Last seen at S6 by all accounts......

Go on then.. I'll be honest, I'm struggling with that one...

:)

As Adkins is working on the pretence , that everyone has a clean sheet principle . If Diego does stop , and if Higdon is fit , he may well try them as a pairing in training , preseason game , behind closed doors game.

Yep , agree with you . Too many if , buts , and maybes for it to work . Trying to think positive , and all players have a chance , to make amends from last season , or to be a surprise package.
