He got a very good prolonged chance at Northampton. He flopped. United are not to blame. Successive managers are not to blame. Injury apart, the young man is entirely responsible for his own downfall, aided and abetted by his daft dad.
Correct on who is responsible, incorrect on the aided and abetted bit.

His daft dad interfered in club business. He spread rumours of interest from elite clubs that simply were not there. He encouraged De Juve to take on Clough, rather than learn from him. Please refrain from telling me I'm incorrect. You are not marking my exam paper. I have been involved with Sheffield United longer than De Juve and Daft Daddy De Juve will ever be. I have no wish to discuss either of these irrelevant nonentities any further. I can recognise a tosser with unerring precision. Its called experience. Nobody appreciates it until they have it.

Why the fuck we have hung on to this lad for so long is beyond me.

We could have got good money? Probably. Then meltdown if we sold him, even for good money.

Never looked like making it based on his - admittedly few - first team appearances. Sadly he's only his own ego to blame. Good luck to him for the future though.

He "agreed to a termination of his contract" and the remaining year may have been worth 52x £3k, more?

He wouldn't agree to anything for nothing and will have taken at least half that amount, probably more. Why should he take less?

He's a free agent now but unless he has something sorted his job prospects are at risk. After a pay-off he can accept a small wage to get his career back on track.

We save the balance.

Not having a go, but what makes you think he could be on three grand a week?

Thank fuck for that.

This cunt and Jay McBomsbscare in quick succession.

Every time these scum leave it feels like a new signing.

If he's off to Europe or even Scotland does he now need a work permit;).

Wilder out. Does he not know that Diego's agent said that big European clubs were after him? Ridiculous. He'd do a job at Barry Town.

I've no idea what he's on, it's a hard one to guess at but he always thought a lot about himself and United still had a good budget at the time. Whatever the numbers, the dynamics of the transaction are there.

BTW, no need to say "not having a go", it's that bitter streak I don't like and the personal bits. Love the debate though.

I'm fairly reliably told it was £2k per week, not sure what the pay off would have been but if we assume half of his contract it's not a huge amount to have someone who's not interested off the books.

He was on his way last summer then Clough got sacked and Adkins gave him a trial and then a 2 year deal. He couldn't force his way into the team past Adkins other signings (Woolford and Sammon).

If he couldn't get past Woolford and Sammon then he should be looking at a different career

What an almighty shame, and what a waste.

He looked more talented than anything our academy's produced, and very different. Then injury fucked him and he never got a chance. We would've at least got good money for him at one stage. How typical of us to produce a rare, exciting type of player and never get to see anything of him.

There must be a reason he didn't get a chance when fit under different managers, but that doesn't take away from the sense of what might have been.
There was a very good reason he didn't get a chance under multiple managers. And it's very simple.

Not bloody good enough.

Show pony, nothing more. The type of character you see doing fancy keepy uppies and tricks as half time entertainment.

To make it as a pro footballer you need technical attributes, physical attributes and mental attributes. Diego, maybe, had one of these.

No loss.

Italy must have picked him then for the novelty that he played aboard.

The serious injury must have had a affect , but football ( thankfully ) is still classed as a contact sport and he has gone backwards in his carreer. No loss , just if , buts and maybes

I can understand why you mention the Italy thing. Clearly the lad has some talent but it's commonplace for very promising youth players to fall to make it at grown-up level. Older readers will remember a Sheffield boy wonder named Raymond Storey. Take Louis Reed of England under 20 fame...

Shame Clough messed him about so much with his loan spell(s) at York, he started well, but getting recalled then sent back killed his progress as they stopped playing him through the middle. His failed Northampton spell meant he had no chance here with Wilder, but still a bit disappointing that Adkins didn't give him an odd game for the first team after he started scoring again towards the end of last season.

He was doing fine back at York after the first spell but then specifically requested we recall him from that deal to allow him to jump ship (from a relegation threatened York) go to Northampton. York were quite rightly pissed off – that whole episode said a lot about his character in my view.

I wondered why you quoted a figure then?
