So why hasn't Nigel Adkins given him a fair crack of the whip, just like Nigel Clough didn't.

Not even featuring for the U21s, couple of appearances apart, must be injured. So why hasn't Nigel Adkins given him a fair crack of the whip, just like Nigel Clough didn't.
Shhh. He's on loan at Juventus, playing in disguise under a different identity. Codename: 'Pogba'.
You'd never recognise him.

I am surprised he is still on our books. He made his debut in Dec 2012 and has hardly played since. Most young players would have been released having failed to make progress in 3 years.

It is remarkable. The general approaches to tactics, people, general outlook between Clough and Adkins couldn't be more different in my view. Yet their ultimate approach with regards first team opportunities for De Girolamo, and to some extent McNulty, are remarkably similar. Clough was criticised for not giving him opportunities, unfairly in my view. We now have a manager that repeatedly talks about opportunities for the youngsters, and has included Long, Adams, Reed, K.Wallace, even McGahey, at times this season. This should in theory have been the perfect environment for De Girolamo to impress and kick on. The fact he hasn't tells us enough in my opinion.
Had we withdrawn the contract offer in the summer, where would he now be I wonder? I suspect at a League 2 side, and probably not in it.
I suspect the 'extra' time he has been given to establish himself is probably due to him missing over a year through injury just when he was breaking through? Who knows how much of an impact that had on his development but I expect he will end up playing in League 2 come the summer.
How much can that be used as an excuse though? He was in the midst of a good loan spell at York where he was playing regularly and scoring, and then requested it be terminated so he could go on loan to Northampton – where he scored none and fell out of the team. He has gone backwards in that space of time, all of which has happened since his return from that long layoff.
It's a shame Clough didn't start him upfront as soon as he came off that good spell for York. He's scored in one of his very few starts in his favoured position for us, against Preston. If his attitude really is holding him back then it is majorly disappointing. So much natural ability. Still, only 20, I hope he can prove himself enough to get another chance in the team and take it.All the talent in the world, but seemingly not the attitude and desire to make anything of it. Such a shame.

Listening to the wrong people giving the wrong advice I think. All the talent in the world, but seemingly not the attitude and desire to make anything of it. Such a shame.
He'll need to get used to that if he wants to be a professional footballer.Maybe he's fucked off with all the attacks and snide comments directed at him by supporters of the club he plays for.
Then maybe he hasnt got what it takes to make it as a pro footballerMaybe he's fucked off with all the attacks and snide comments directed at him by supporters of the club he plays for.
Or too good?Maybe he's not good enough?
