So why hasn't Nigel Adkins given him a fair crack of the whip, just like Nigel Clough didn't.

Shhh. He's on loan at Juventus, playing in disguise under a different identity. Codename: 'Pogba'.

You'd never recognise him.

I am surprised he is still on our books. He made his debut in Dec 2012 and has hardly played since. Most young players would have been released having failed to make progress in 3 years.

Hes going for tea at Brian the Blades house and playing in the back garden at 3 and in with Brian and his Dad.

Does it have owt to do with our backroom kit staff not knowing how to fit his name on the shirt? Or possibly we sent a Fax off to the FA two years ago and we are awaiting a reply as to his eligibility?

Injured I believe...put the cap on one rung too tight, hasn't been the same since...

It is remarkable. The general approaches to tactics, people, general outlook between Clough and Adkins couldn't be more different in my view. Yet their ultimate approach with regards first team opportunities for De Girolamo, and to some extent McNulty, are remarkably similar. Clough was criticised for not giving him opportunities, unfairly in my view. We now have a manager that repeatedly talks about opportunities for the youngsters, and has included Long, Adams, Reed, K.Wallace, even McGahey, at times this season. This should in theory have been the perfect environment for De Girolamo to impress and kick on. The fact he hasn't tells us enough in my opinion.

Had we withdrawn the contract offer in the summer, where would he now be I wonder? I suspect at a League 2 side, and probably not in it.

I suspect the 'extra' time he has been given to establish himself is probably due to him missing over a year through injury just when he was breaking through? Who knows how much of an impact that had on his development but I expect he will end up playing in League 2 come the summer.

How much can that be used as an excuse though? He was in the midst of a good loan spell at York where he was playing regularly and scoring, and then requested it be terminated so he could go on loan to Northampton – where he scored none and fell out of the team. He has gone backwards in that space of time, all of which has happened since his return from that long layoff.

In 3 seasons he's played 18 league games in the 4th division (4 goals) and 2 in the 3rd division (no goals). He hasn't played a league game for us since 2012-13.

Was there ever a player whose hype so massively outrun his actual achievements?

Disappointing, but I've seen players come through to be touted as the next big thing and to totally disappear.

I get the impression that he had too much too young, with the Italian U-19 call ups and the big clubs sniffing round him, and that probably turned his head a bit a little and led him to believe he was better than he was.

If he is one of the 15 players Nigel Adkins wants to ship out then it will be no skin off my nose.

All the talent in the world, but seemingly not the attitude and desire to make anything of it. Such a shame.
It's a shame Clough didn't start him upfront as soon as he came off that good spell for York. He's scored in one of his very few starts in his favoured position for us, against Preston. If his attitude really is holding him back then it is majorly disappointing. So much natural ability. Still, only 20, I hope he can prove himself enough to get another chance in the team and take it.

Agree and whether it be injury, development (lack of) or attitude, it is clear he isn't good enough for us and I would not care a jot if we had got rid.

However he undoubtedly had talent and with the injury I am guessing this led the club to give him a bit more of a chance - even though I wouldn't have.

Maybe he's fucked off with all the attacks and snide comments directed at him by supporters of the club he plays for.
He'll need to get used to that if he wants to be a professional footballer.

Last time Adkins mentioned him, he sounded exasperated saying he'd needed to be fit to come into contention.

Looks like his time with us is over as he can't get fit enough to get a game even at U21 level.

I would think he is only one of the development/u21 players NA has to make a decision on, we all love to see home grown players coming through but how long do you persevere with them. Like it or not we are a business and contracted players have a cost to the club no matter how small. The other factor is these players block the path of other academy players from the U18, a point NA has alluded to. NA certainly has some hard decisions to make in June whichever division we are in, the squad has to be seriously trimmed, we are a 3rd tier club operating in the guise of being in the Championship.

I don't think Clough had a bad record at all when it comes to "giving opportunites to youngsters".
He signed Adams, K.Wallace and McGahey. Played Kennedy often when he was fit.
Gave debuts to Reed, Dimaio, Khan and Calvert-Lewin.
If anything, he played both McGahey (15 games) and Reed (19 games) too much in the league last season when we needed more experience.
