Dicking about in the corner

It has not, is not and should never be part of the makeup of SUFC! Whenever we do it, bad things happen. Wilder should know we had them penned in. Then we pissed about, lost momentum and energy &.... low and behold!

Agree , drives me mad ,
I don't mind it say in the last min of injury time but with 4mins of normal time left !??! Just doesn't make sense esp as we were excellent and could have (maybe eventually got that deserved 2nd)

Poor finishing and the late very undeserved equaliser aside, what a great performance,
Whole team was excellent and the football was a joy to watch

IMO prob the finest performance since maybe hull 2nd half at home ?
Certainly the best performance against a top 6 team

All to play for although sadly my head thinks that too many misses will see us just miss out but forever hopeful !

Don't mind it in the last minute or two but there are better tactics with 5 or 10 left.

Disappointed in Donaldson's contribution last night. Before their goal he was lurking out wide which I would have no problem with earlier in the game or if we needed a goal, but under those circumstances he had to be on the defender.

He was nowhere near and not long afterwards boom.

I hate it when we start to play negative football like we did, we had them on the back foot pretty much all game then decided to change our game plan.
Have to question the Leonard signing if he is on for 5 minutes to sure up the defence and we still concede.
It's just very frustrating, we played so well and made them look so average, just for us to throw the game with such negative ideas.
Fans are allowed to vent frustration.

It’s not a tactic which suits this team.

The idea to wind down the clock in my view is best served by retaining possession. Holding the ball where you have nowhere to go, only hoping to get a throw or corner or foul is ok with a minute to go, not with six to go.

I would have thought passing between the team, backwards if needs be would be a better tactic. It eats up more time and also pulls the opposition out of position chasing the ball.

Alternatively just stick to what we do best - attack. Us getting the ball in the corner also signalled the end of our attacking intent and that was the best part of our play.

The last sub was weird too. Ok, wind the clock down, but take off someone less skilled at defending like Clarke and bring on Leonard, not like for like.

Perhaps that’s a harsh criticism but the main point is, even when winding down the clock, stick to what we are good at.

Under Warnock we’d be 2-0 up after one of 19 strikers got the 2nd. Then we’d send 2 or 3 into the corner. Not leave one man scrapping against 3. Besides, I genuinely can’t remember (may be age) us playing hold up in the corner under Warnock. We were more likely to play it long, rugby union style and then battle for the throws.

I remember Warnock going apeshit once when one player didn't go to the corner against Palace at home in the last throes and went for a shot at goal. Gave up possession and conceded an injury time equaliser.

Not a fan of it, we always seem to lose possession. It isn't as bad as under Clough though. I remember we were winning 1-0 at home to Crawley in the 82nd minute and we were heading to the corner flag. In my opinion one of the low points for our great club and one of the very few times that I have booed out own players.

I've no issue with us holding the ball in the corner in a game like Monday's but what I do expect is that the player in the corner is capable of holding off a man. Donaldson is just not strong enough: it should have been Clarke or Lundstram, leaning back into the defender (Gunnarsson) and ensuring that he couldn't legally get to the ball. Donaldson's too passive and it was too easy for Cardiff to nick the ball off him.

It's shit. The ball usually falls back to the opposition anyway so just play for another goal and kill them off.

Your talking arse mate

Fanny magnet ... that as may be, but it seems as though it’s prompted a bit of debate & I may not be the only one that doesn’t understand its purpose in the context of Monday’s game. For clarity, I’m not saying: 1) nobody should ever do it. 2) it’s the sole reason for their equaliser. Or 3) sufc are somehow better than this tactic. What I am saying is: in my experience of watching United it rarely works out well. In the case of Monday, we had them on the ropes, we had lions share of previous 15 mins possession, they were tired & yet, with 10 minutes to go we started giving one man (on his own) the challenge of fending off 3 players to keep the ball in the corner. As a result, they had a breather, regrouped, restructured and had the chance to get it long and score. This is often what happens when we do this.

It’s a bit like the period in league 1 where for half a season or more, we played short throws to a static man on the full, who would then miscontrol the volley and either trickle the pass back to the thrower (who was more often that not closed down) or would just kick it straight out for their throw. All the while, I was wondering if this was really what had been practiced all week. Just one of those strange misnomers.
