Great Match.

In it from start to finish.

Fantastic to see us compete all over pitch.

New signings all look good.

We look a good Championship side- how amazing is that.

Love to see us play like this thanks Chris for giving us football like this, you deserve a contract for life.

Villa were also good , and was a cracking heart breaker strike from Snodgrass, could have gone either way though, and that's why we absolutely 100% DESERVED SOMETHING.

May lose at Wolves - but near future looking extremely bright.

Not sure about you but i thought it was a crap match. Only came off my seat 2 or 3 times and that was in the first half. Very frustrating

I think that’s becoming more of a trend where teams come to frustrate and hit us. Helps when you have someone like Snodgrass who pulled that out of his locker

Wouldn't go as far as to call it a great match, but it was an 'interesting' match as two evenly matched sides tried to get supremacy over the other. As you say I could have gone either way and when you consider the players that they have then I fail to see what all the moaning and groaning is coming from. We have a very good side which just needs little things fine tuning. Let's call it right. Whilst we probably didn't deserve to win it (credit to Villa) we certainly were the better side in my eyes over 90 mins. The problem is that the higher up the league's you go, the more chance that a bit of quality will undo you.

We have a great deal to look forward to and I'm a very optimistic blade right now.

I agree with the op rather than yourself.
There were great individual battles all over the pitch. We competed well and were positive throughout. It was a great contest and our unknowns held their own against some household names.

We were particularly strong in the first half and deserved to go in with a lead.
Second half was more even, but that snodgrass goal was harsh, even though it was well taken.

A good game doesn’t always have to be peppered with lots of goals. I thought it was a cracker.

You really do have an odd view of football ,the first half especially was quality from 2 good sides wanting to play football ,just because we didn't win doesn't make it a crap match.

male cow manure lets play teams like Norwich every week ,that was a good game last night ,we lost ,we move on .

It's always interesting to see differing points of view Sitters, but you're right, we looked good first half.
Villa are no mugs for sure, yet we hit the bar....again, created 2 or 3 other good chances and generally looked the better team in the first half.
Yes, it's frustrating at times when we seem to dwell with the ball a little too long, but if we can we look the better team against Aston Villa, now just one point off the autos, then we're not a million miles away are we? :)

LEAVE YOUR POSITIVISM AT THE DOOR MATE!

Only kidding, nice way of seeing it and a useful reframing of how far we've come.

Was a good game. Their keeper made 6 major saves which is a vast improvement from previous games at the Lane.

Let’s not forget with five mins to go they took off Adomah for Jedinak and settled for the draw. We just got undone by a bit of class.

We can blame Stevens all you like but Snodgrass still has a lot to do and he smash it in the corner. It’s a sickener but hopefully not seen as us going backwards.

Yes the subs were confusing but looking back and looking at Wards explanation below then it makes sense including putting fresh legs in the middle.

Wards

I think Wilder wanted to get Holmes on the pitch for his debut, but also wanted Lunny on who’s a little more defensively minded than Evans - hence doing the Leonard for Lundstram swap first to ensure we stayed solid for ten mins. Reckon CW saw it as an opportunity to change our shape a bit and go for 3 points more than anything else

We made a Villa side look very ordinary last night for long periods. Read their forums they were in meltdown until the 89th Minute. Some of our football in the first 45 minutes was the best for a long time. Evans is a big upgrade on Lundstram and at times it looked like Coutts was back in the side. The lad can shoot and take corners. We failed to take our chances starting with Oconnell after 4 minutes he should have hit the target.

They came out second half and pressed us further up the field. We didn't need to make two substitutions at once and we made the wrong ones, Duffy and Sharp should have been brought on. We were still in the game until we gave Snodgrass too much room. In that one instance Villa have suddenly become a super team who we can't compete with because they have much better players and finance and we should be thankful we are on the same pitch as them and haven't we done well to get where we are!

Villa were poor for long periods, Johnstone won them the game and were lucky to come away with the points. Not my view but that of my son in laws who are Villa fans.

Funny how we can slag the Pigs off for wasting millions but Villa are far better because they've spent millions that'll be the same Villa the pigs beat at their place.

Manager got it wrong last night but he'll learn from it. Glad CW and the team haven't given up hope of the play offs like some on here have. Only one team this season has caused us problems that was Fulham. On to Wolves some game time for Duffy and Sharp would be good.

Still struggling to see how we deserved anything to be honest.

I think some people have forgotten the basic rules of the game of football.

Not sure what you mean, we had more posesssion, more shots on target, more shots off target, most corners and most of the good chances. Their goalie was busy, our goalie hardly had anything to do.

Usually (over time) that pattern of dominance means you win more than they lose.

or do you feel that which ever teams wins the match deserves it? that’s clearly inaccurate.

I’m more interested in the direction the club is moving, so performances are important, they give a clue regards future results. Do agree though that for one-off occasions you can blame good luck or bad luck but over a spell of games luck can’t be an excuse. We’ve been quite unlucky for many of the recent games but I don’t buy the bad luck excuse. We must be lacking something.

They do say the best teams often seem to be lucky whereas weak teams often seem to be unlucky.
At least the new players look good and Brooks is due back, so I’m still optimistic we can make the play-offs.

Yet you post like it was the first game youve ever seen. We would have won 99% of games over the past 6 years with that team and performance. People have forgotten more then you know about football on that quote.

Villa defended better than us and attacked better than us, hence the result.

If we had scored in the last minute and won 1-0 nobody would be saying that Villa deserved something.

Were we battered? No. Did we play well in the first half? Yes. All irrelevant I'm afraid.

If you can't score and can't keep a clean sheet in 90 minutes of football then you deserve to lose.

I disagree about the 99%.

We played better against Fulham and Bristol City than we did last night and we lost both of those as well.

Agree. A good team makes more of its chances so a keeper may pull off a blinder against a good team but they create another chance that they put away. A bad team doesn't and curses their luck over the keeper's great save. A good team might be two ahead and have a clear penalty turned down but forget about it whereas a bad team may be drawing and will say 'we should have won that, it's not fair'.

Things like balls dropping to the opposition in the box rarely happens to good teams because the keeper and defenders deal with the initial shot properly whereas a poor team doesn't, a scuffed or sliced clearance falls to the opposition and they score.

It can look like fortune but more often than not, it isn't. It's a game of fine margins and those little mistakes we don't always see such as a defender being slightly square on or a keeper being slightly out of position can pass us by. Luck can make a difference in cup games but the league is usually a reasonable representation of a team's quality.

Villa are the in form team at the moment, we made them look average, the Blades deserved to win......top six finish for the red and white wizards.....

We really didn't play better against Fulham. We defended dreadfully that night, whereas last night we were defensively superb - it took a moment of real class to get by us. They only went close once before that in the entire game.

Performances may be secondary to results, but they do matter.

Totally agree with the OP.

Partly cos my ticket for Wolves arrived today and no way and i trudging to Molineux all miserable cursing our team for not winning. But also Wilder's way isn't to mope feeling sorry for yourself, those players are going to be proper fired up to give Wolves a fright by the weekend, even more so than they were in first half last night.

Just hope they can do a bit better at placing the ball in that sweet spot between the keeper and the woodwork.

Still really gutted about it tbh, but definitely agree it was a class game to watch, captivating throughout.

We nullified the nowadays-predatory Hogan (making you think, in hindsight, maybe one of the centre-halves could have been sacrificed for a sub?), kept their dangerous midfield in check pretty much throughout, and kept forcing the pace even when Villa upped their intensity levels 2nd half. Villa, without being defensive, defended very well (Terry, Hutton and the Icelandic midfielder were pretty outstanding).

Got nothing but praise for the performance - another fully committed, front-foot, haveago show. We really do go about our football in the right way, & we're there or thereabouts with the very best teams in the division.

Got every confidence we'll go to Wolves now with the usual fearless, attacking mindset & that we'll go toe-to-toe with them and do ourselves credit, win or not. We're competing properly with the best.

On balance we deserved something from the game. We had a great first half. We are a decent side.

As is well documented on here we just lack that championship level match winner to win tight games (the manager has more or less said this publicly). I fear not getting hold of one or two of these players, may mean we just miss out on the play offs come May. I hope I'm wrong.

Having watched the extended highlights and relived the game I’ve concluded again that Villa are a bunch of lucky fkrs..
