The reality is if we sign League One players and don't get proper investment to allow us to compete with the Wolves, Derby, Villa etc we will be a mid table Champ club at best for a few years. That is the reality sadly. We were fine tonight but that is three home games without a goal. We lack the quality to break teams down. Villa and Wolves have 10 million pound playwrs. We caanot afford 1 million pound players. Harsh reality
If that is the harsh reality, then it shows just how well Wilder does with what he has at his disposal.
Villa are a quality side and we more than held our own against them tonight,

If we finish 8th or 9th we'e done fucking brilliantly this season. That said, we should certainly do better given what we're capable of.

Fact is, against the likes of Villa and Bristol... and Derby, we arguably deserved wins. But for hitting the woodwork against a couple of them, we would have done.

All this hand wringing is pathetic.
we’re still in7th with a great chance of the playoffs.. people are assuming our rivals will win every game.. they won’t
villa are a decent outfit they’ll be top two

Not really pathetic just opinions on a forum, what is pathetic is the acceptance that we should always be a second rate club but with the fans and potential to be a top 10 premier league side, we had a great opportunuty this season but the "owners" decided to give Wilder peanuts, after saying that we didn't deserve to lose that game but how many time s have we heard that season...not looking forward to Wolves.

2 rancid substitutions for me tonight and a seriously strange night night for Tufty..

1) Taking off Willo for Donaldson, Donaldson should have been on for that weird invisible lad that hasn't been seen for weeks Clarke!

2) Taking off a lad that still had plenty of legs and ran the game from the ko to the time he went off (Evans)

3) Holmes not Duffy?

In my opinion Wilders cost us at least a point tonight maybe more, nowt to.do with plan b's!

Nope. Pathetic.

Wilder is certainly adventurous. I thought he started one too many of the new guys - they were running on empty for periods.
For me Duffy is our best player. He holds up play and gives everyone a breather. He should always start. With the benefit of hindsight Duffy for Leonard would have been good to see.

The better team lost. The difference is we don't have that player who can do something a bit different or work a bit of magic which at the end of the day you have to pay for, Villa can and have paid for that extra bit of quality we can't at the moment. For all our being on top and working their keeper if we don't score we are always vulnerable to a bit of quality turning the game against us as happened tonight.
I can't for the life of me understand why Duffy didn't start or Donaldson for that matter, Gold boots and a bit of a flash overhead kick otherwise not impressed at all with Wilson. What is concerning is us being the dominant team yet losing, this is happening for too often for my liking.

Wilson was slowly moving towards a second yellow, which probably had more to do with it than the performance. The Evans sub was strange, but I can see why Holmes came on. I think Wilder was desperate for a spark and Duffy probably needs a rest.

Their goalkeeper and a bit of class won them the game. We have lost probably 9 games where we didn't deserve to because we don't have that bit of class. Unfortunately, spending money on League 1 or Championship reserve players won't make the difference. Money does make the difference in this division.

I would disagree with the theory that we didn’t deserve anything from the game. We outplayed Villa in the opening 30 minutes and could easily have had a couple of goals, fans claiming we never looked like scoring are talking nonsense, we rattled their bar, Johnstone made some fine saves and Wilson’s overhead kick was only a fraction off.

I said in the chat box at half time that as a team we were playing the better football. We looked fluid, the team look like they know each other’s games, there was some brilliant pass and moves going off and by and large we were creating the better chances. Lee Evans and John Fleck looked good on midfield, Clarke was working hard for the team and Baldock looked a threat marauding up the flank again.

However, what Aston Villa possess what we unfortunately don’t and that’s out and out match winners. At any moment I could see Grealish weaving some magic and creating a goal, or Adamoah’s pace hurting us on the left with Baldock not at home. But the one thing I could see happening (and I predicted it in the chat box at half time) was a Snodgrass screamer. We were allowing him so much time on the ball all game. His set pieces looked dangerous and moments before his last minute winner he tried the same trick but Stevens fortunately managed to cut him out. To allow him, their biggest threat, to come inside like that was criminal, but it’s been the story of our season and it was so predictable. We’ve dropped so many points, having dominated teams, to individual moments of brillIance - usually long rangers.

As per so many games this season, whilst looking the more cohesive unit, we lack the individuals to win us games with moments of brilliance like tonight and thus we are destined to scrap it out for 6th place (which is no embarrassment given how far we’ve come).

I would note that Moore, O’Connell and Stearman all looked solid again tonight. 7/10.

Basham - 6/10. Did some awful things with the ball tonight, looked dead clumsy. His engine is useful and he is wholehearted in everything he does but the quality is often lacking. Potentially a position we should look to improve upon.

Baldock 8/10, he’s improving. He’s a good athlete and is starting to improve going forward. Had two good efforts on goal and put a couple of decent balls in (one of which was at head height and went right across the 6 yard box, nobody attacked it).

Enda Stevens 5.5/10. His attacking output continues to disappoint (though he did chip one nice ball to the back post first half which made a nice change). I’m assuming it was him who let Snodgrass in for the goal? If it was him my mark is correct. If not, I may be being harsh.

This Lee Evans fella could turn out to be a great find. Some moments of real quality tonight and looks to have a bit of fire in his belly. Likes a tackle and can play a bit too. 7/10 along with Fleck who put in his usual busy shift. The pair of them had some appalling attempts on goal though. We need to improve our shots from range.

Ryan Leonard 5.5/10. He looks nervous on the ball. He took the easy decision every time and tried to shift it on like a hot potato. You can see why Wilder likes him and I’m confident he will come good, but Lundstram must be disappointed to be overlooked on his account given early performances.

Clarke and Wilson I would give 6/10. Both worked hard but nothing really fell for them. It’s a shame Wilson isn’t fully match fit yet, he looks dangerous.

I half agree. Money can make a difference, but so can intelligent signings. A la Huddersfield last season.

And I trust Wilder to make such signings too.

Roy is spot on, and 1 win in last 7 at home is not going to get us near the top 6.

We are not far off, but just lack some real quality and some better decision making at times. I think that after tonight top six has almost gone, but it’s still been a great season.

This is probably Chris’s biggest test as a manager, he is against some good managers who have some better players and importantly more resources to draw from. It’s a learning curve for him, and probably one that he learns from and develops, or this is his ceiling and he ultimately joins the managerial also rans. Personally I think it’s the former and it may take him a couple more seasons in this division to take us forward.

Unfortunate/ unlucky tonight? But our trajectory is certainly forward, we could just do with a bit of luck and our strikers to hit the back of the net.

UTB

We got exactly what we deserved from that game. No creativity or guile going forward at all. All huff and puff to no avail. Why is our player of the season sat on his arse when we are crying out for some craft and composure going forward . Clayton Donaldson must wonder what he has done wrong to not be starting

Very poor tonight in my opinion from Tufty. Never did enough to win it even when we had decent spells

I see a correlation to Leon going off the boil since he was handed the captains band. he needs to be left to roam free and give the job to Bash or Stearman

i cannot believe that he is changing up what has worked so well all season. Duffy has to start every game for me

think this is the end of the playoff charge , now with a trip to Wolves

Terrible post. Did you vote Trump as well? ;)

First 45mins to my eyes was excellent, variance in pace, length of pass, angle of attack. Good link up play & movement across the pitch. We looked like a top quality championship side, and going in 1-0, if not 2-0 up wouldn't have flattered us. They were organized, but comparatively poor with their forward isolated and the central midfield not wishing to commit.

The second half was middling turning to poor. Villa came into into it with possession in more advanced positions, but stil suffered from an isolated forward.

I thought the substitutions were the wrong ones and after that we lost our shape. If they were to score it was going to be from outside the box & they'd given us plenty of warning. I was disappointed that we didn't seek to expose Terry & Hutton with pace & get them turning. That's as easier 90mins of football that Terry has had since turning 30.

I'd love to know where magic comes into play when you give any professional footballer that amount of time and space with a football, shocking defending!

The BBC certainnly seemed impressed with how we played:

Robert Snodgrass scored a last-minute winner at Sheffield United to send Aston Villa third in the Championship.

Jack O'Connell crashed an early header off the bar, setting the tone for a first-half largely dominated by United.

Villa goalkeeper Sam Johnstone ensured it remained scoreless at half-time, denying Leon Clarke and George Baldock.

Jack Grealish sent a rare effort wide for Villa after the break and Johnstone foiled John Fleck before Snodgrass cut inside and curled home.

Sadly we don't have a Snodgrass but I still think we'll be right in the mix come the end of season.

deserved to win on points, but we do conceed a goal a game , never play scoreless draws so we'll loose games we don't score.

I must of been watching a different game then flower, because i dont think we was second best at all in that match, one minute of class is what seperated the game

A lot has been said about our team tonight but apart from a well taken goal, I thought Villa offered little threat and certainly wouldn't be automatic contenders on that performance. Particularly in the first half, their only efforts came from corners. If we can reduce the so called big teams with their elite players to that, then we must be doing something right. We do take too much time to get the ball in the box though from good positions, which is where things happen, gives the crowd a lift and by not doing it, gives the opposition defenders time to organise. I would have liked to see Duffy play a part tonight, not sure why we didn't see him.

In general terms we played well

However, whilst our approach play was ok, we lacked a cutting edge

It's very rare we breakthrough their defence, only approach it. It's usually predictable and once we've been sussed, seems straightforward for the opposition to combat.

Not sure what the answer is, but then I'm not the Gaffer, so it doesn't matter

Wouldn’t touch Corbyn with a bargepole pal.

I was joking, didn’t think you’d be a Trump fan. Bloody hell. Unbelievable. :)
