Great interview, and what a great player Geary was for us.

When him, Quinn and Bromby played for us I worked with this thick Wednesday fan who used to come out with "the only reason you're playing well/in the promotion race/got promoted/playing in the Prem/etc is because of ex-Wednesday players". He used to say it all the time, like it was somehow a positive thing they'd released players who were playing a part in us being successful (and constantly above them).

"Yes mate, you're quite right. Glad we got them off you", I'd say, and he'd have this dumb fucking grin on his face like he'd got one over on me.

The mind boggles as to what was going off in his head.

I remember Del getting absolute dogs abuse from "that lot" in a derby game.
Can't believe we'd ever treat an ex Blade like that. Pure evil!

My mum used to cut his, Tongey's and Michael Brown's hair. As a kid I remember chatting to Del when he was in the salon getting his hair cut and he had all the time in the world to chat to me about the Blades. Top lad.

I believe he had an Ireland call-up at the end of the Prem season that he had to withdraw from through injury. One of my favourite players of that era, and one that I thought along with Morgan got a rough deal when Robson arrived – he made it clear that both weren’t really what he wanted, and while I know he’s gone on to have a successfulish career I thought Bardsley was no better when brought in.

Favourite Geary moment (other than his famous goal), was busting a gut to get to the line and stretching to cross for Pericard to nod in at the Kop end in the 4-0 win over Luton. If you think Cranie’s stretch seemed impossible last Saturday, this was perhaps even more impressive – and injured Geary in the process. The fact he was willing to put that level of effort in for a game already well won summed him up.
