Derby winning Cardiff

I actually went to this (my Cardiff supporting mate had a spare ticket) and came away thinking how the fuck are both those teams above us??? The quality (or lack of) was shocking. Don't think I saw more than two consecutive passes before someone pumped it long into a channel...

The only consolation was Madine being by far the worst player on the pitch and the Cardiff fans singing for Zahore from about the 10th minute...

Brentford - leading 1-0. DRAW
Cardiff - leading 1-0. DRAW
Barnsley - leading 2-1. LOSS
Boro - leading 1-0. WIN
Millwall - leading 1-0. DRAW
Birmingham - leading 1-0. LOSS

12 points lost from leading position in the past 6 games.

That’s why we’ll fail. Holding on in half those games would have got us in the top 6.

Annoying thing is we’ve outplayed Derby twice this season.
The annoying thing for me is outplaying some of the best teams in the division and then gifting them a goal which turns a win to a draw or a draw into defeat. We get complacent because of the good performance despite dropping points then the week after play a team at the bottom and don't show up. We had 36pts after the first 17 games the next 27 games have brought us 30pts, I'm not saying it is down to Coutts getting injured but you cannot expect a young player from league one/two to step into his position in the team. Similar with an ageing Duffy who can't last for 90mins week in week out we still have no adequate replacement for him. When we let CCV go in January it left us short of any sort of presence in the back three. All little things which have contributed to us in effect throwing away any return from at least 10 games in the period from when we topped the table we really could have been taking things easy by now with an extra 10pts. To be honest if Fulham manage 2nd place there will not be a lot of quality in the play off's, Cardiff, Villa, Derby and Boro the likely candidates are all very much beatable.

I think we should 'get a grip',at the end of every championship season there are 21 teams disappointed that they havn't got promoted,we are just one of them.I have really enjoyed this season, with odd exceptions, steady progress and a top ten finish, the challenge is for the club to improve on this next season,we have got to stop beating ourselves up,we havn't under achieved !!

I think now its over we should stop looking back at how many ridiculous points we have thrown away. In the history books it will say we finished 11th (likely) in our first season after promotion. We all know we should have been higher but it's still a good return and a good platform to build on. Our form since New Year isn't anywhere near as bad as some suggest in comparison to other sides and if we sort ourselves out at boardroom level we are in as good a position as most clubs to build next season.

It's the waiting game now. I can't lie that I don't have major worries about next season but let's just see what happens in the summer and reflect on our highest finish in 8 seasons.

2016 - 11th League 1
2017 - pissed it
2018 - 11th in Chumpionship (at worst)

OK, we have disappointed on occasions since Xmas and thrown points away but this is an inexperienced squad at this level and we have improved since last season as plenty of our results and performances have shown.

We're not far short in this Division now and if we can avoid any upheavals this Summer, Tufty knows exactly what is required so let's get ready for next season :)

So, by my reckoning, we're due to piss the league next year :)

Although I admit to being a little disappointed at the outcome of our season, I certainly don't view it as a failure considering where we were before. However, you can't deny it was a fucking huge missed opportunity and they don't come around like this very often.

Derby doing same as Pigs last year- absolute crap for months, never seem to win but somehow hang onto a play off spot like a determined turd.

Wednesday won 7 consecutive games prior to last season's play-offs, bar the last match of the season when they rested the first team.

Considering how disappointing the second half of the season has seemed it's surprising to see the league table since the start of the year...

We should be able to finish at least 11th next season... and I suspect that's around where we'll be.

Our problems stem from the JTW, whose fault that is will only be known by those in charge with the running of the club and Wilder himself.

It’s a real shame how it’s panned out, the lads at the club couldn’t have really put any more effort in so they deserve our upmost respect in these last two games because we won’t have failed through a lack of effort if indeed we do as expected now and fail to reach the playoffs.

Certainly has. It's because we only had half of Coutts followed by half of Lundstram.

Can you point out the goals that we have leaked that you can pin on Lundstram?

Our problem is that we can't keep a clean sheet to save our lives.

As I have pointed out on other threads, a big worry for me is that our leaked goals often seem to come from exactly the same position, with an opposition player attacking towards the right of our goal, or being stood, ready to receive a ball, to the right of our goal, and this is a JOC/Stevens issue.

We lost at home, 2-1 to Bristol City and the following week, 1-0 away at Preston, both the winning goal for Bristol and the goal for Preston were identical, ball chipped over to a player stood to the right of our goal, with no one on him, so either a communication misunderstanding between Stearman and JOC or JOC and Stevens, as to who should be doing what.

Millwall's equaliser at the Lane was similar, ball to a player attacking to the right of our goal.

Madine's goal at the Lane, stood at the right of our goal

I've pointed out on another thread that our formation (i.e. sticking stubbornly to a back three) has left us exposed on the flanks too often and resulted in the type of goals you describe. I fully agree.

Coutts vs Lundstram is a different kettle of fish. One is a class playmaker, the other one isn't. One carries the ball forward and sets up attacking play, the other one dithers and invites pressure. Coutts was our rare breed of quality on a consistent basis, Lundstram isn't but in his defence he was left to carry the can when this position should have been sorted out in the JTW instead of the pointless mish-mash we brought in.

I think the issue (as we all pretty much agree on) is that Coutts shoes were too big to fill. Not arguing with that.

Even taking off the Blades tinted specs, there are not too many players I have watched in this league who are better than Coutts, on his day.

I think the pace of the Championship has taken a few players by surprise, with Lee Evans often having the ball taken away from his feet by a quicker opposition player, despite the crowd screaming "man on!".

I though they were all screaming "shooooot"!
