I'm sure others have contacted SYP/Sky etc about this, but I've put together the following email. Before I send it, does anyone have any points to add? It will be sent to the following people (any other suggestions welcome):

To whom it may concern.

I am writing this email to register my concerns with the timing of the football match between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday 10th November at noon.

I believe that this fixture was moved from its original kick-off time at the request of either Sky TV or South Yorkshire Police. Please correct me if I am wrong.

My three main concerns with the timing of this fixture are as follows:

1. I expect that a large number of those attending the match would like to pay their respects at Remembrance events around the city and further afield. The kick-off time won't allow people to attend both a Remembrance event and the football match. Remembrance Sunday is an important day in our calendar, with many people remembering those who gave their lives for us.

2. The biggest Remembrance event usually takes place at Barkers Pool in Sheffield city centre. When the event is taking place, thousands of football supporters will be making their way through the city towards Bramall Lane, or to pubs and bars around Barkers Pool to watch the game. Given the rivalry between the two clubs, this will undoubtedly mean a lot of noise, potential disorder and therefore disrespectful disruptions to the Remembrance events.

3. There will no doubt be plans by Sheffield United to invite supporters to respect the laying of the wreaths, the last post and to observe a silence before the game. This is usually held directly prior to kick-off, meaning it will take place as many supporters are entering the ground. Whilst 99.9% of supporters will undoubtedly respect the silence, those entering the ground at the time may not be aware of the silence taking place, meaning there may be chanting/noise during the silence. From experience at previous matches, it only takes ONE person out of 30,000+ supporters to break the silence, resulting in other supporters shouting/booing their displeasure at said person, disrupting it further.

My overall concern with the terrible decision to stage this game on Sunday 10th November at 12 pm, is that it could potentially paint the city of Sheffield in a negative light and won't allow people to remember as they would normally. The game is being broadcast on Sky Sports, so the world will be watching the city.

This game already tends to spill over with emotion. Adding this issue into the mix could worsen the situation.

My request is for those involved to rethink this decision if possible. If it is too late to do so, then I would suggest the following actions are considered:

1. Place a police cordon around Barkers Pool and the surrounding streets, with extra police presence.

2. The bars around Barkers Pool to be closed until 12pm, including the Wetherspoons etc.

3. Decision makers at Sky Sports to liaise with Sheffield United to give thought to the timing for the Remembrance ceremony in the ground to be held. Holding the ceremony directly before kick-off as fans enter the ground could be a recipe for disaster.

4. Inform all supporters well in advance, and again on the day of the game, of the timings of the ceremony in the ground, using official club websites, social media and any other means of reaching supporters.

5. Instruct turnstile/concourse stewards to inform supporters when the planned silence is imminent.

6. Use signage outside the ground, on the concourses and on the stadium's big screen to inform supporters of events.

Since the news of the kick-off change was announced, all supporters I have been in contact with (United and Wednesday) expressed their displeasure with the change. The thoughts expressed in my email, therefore, are shared by thousands of Sheffield football supporters and therefore should be taken seriously.

I write this email for no benefit to myself, but to allow the residents of Sheffield to pay their respects in their own way on this important day, and to ensure the city of Sheffield doesn't suffer negative publicity as a result of the potential issues that may arise.

If anyone wants to help with this, please read the above and let me know anything I've missed, please.

It's fine , I'd never discourage anyone from doing what they feel right . It will fall on deaf ears of course but you've made your concerns known so fair play.

Yeh I know. Hopefully someone somewhere can do something to help.

I've had a reply from the Star who sound like they're going to publish something on it.

Both clubs could actually look at this as an opportunity to create a bit of positive media for the clubs within our City.

Remember the below? It was a lovely and quite humbling touch..

For just 5 minutes we could all do as they did in 1914 and simply down tools and forget our rivalry, they did so in The Christmas Truce with far more at stake after all?

For all our hatred for one and other, we do share some common ground don’t we? And whilst it may seem bizarre to some, it is a very rare opportunity to commemorate all of those from within our City who have bravely lost their lives for each and every one of us.

Make a real statement of enemies coming together in solidarity for a common cause, albeit short lived. Get current and ex servicemen and women on board and really celebrate our city.

Afterwards…. normal service resumes and the hatred reinstalled.

it will be over by 2pm and many fans will head into the centre afterwards. Most Wednesday fans have little option if they want to get home by public transport.
Are they not arriving and leaving by the tunnel this year then?

Totally agree and good post...if any blades or owls causes trouble that day then they are fucking retards of the highest level.

Quick update - my letter was published in the Star online yesterday and was picked up by Radio Sheffield.

Clive Betts has weighed in also. They’ve just done a lengthy feature on BBCRS this morning.

No replies from anyone else though.

I’m not sure what point you are making. Remembrance Day is the 11th of November, but Remembrance Sunday (when most of the parades will be held) is Sunday 10th November.
As Im ex forces of course we should remember but the Sunday parade like in Barkers pool are for religeous purposes, the real day is the 11th

the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month was chosen as it was the end of the war ,,,, to end all wars which because we humans cant help it we ignore completely and to this day have continuous conflicts

we shall be showing respect at every football ground as we always do

theres no reason to not got to Barkers pool and still be in the ground for 11.30 as the 11 o clock minutes silence is the last act of the service apart from the last post

The kick off sould be changed and start a 1pm not much to ask is it ,but there again sky the coppers and Sheffield council do not care. Just think for one min, If it wasnt for our armed forces and civilians who lost there lives in war.it would have been a lot different to what it is now.

Reply from the EFL…

Hello Dan

Thank you for your email, we acknowledge your views.

The date and kick-off time for the fixture has been determined by discussions between a number of stakeholders, including the police, the two Clubs, the EFL and other local authorities.

With this being a derby fixture, and the first meeting of the two clubs since 2019, it was requested that the game be played on the Sunday, with a 12:00 kick-off.

We understand that many fans will want to pay their respects to servicemen and women affected by wars past and present, and we are supporting the Clubs in their plans for a wreath laying ceremony before kick-off on the day of the game.

We appreciate you providing your views, which have been passed through to relevant staff at the EFL and thank you for contacting the EFL.

Kind Regards

Danny

What a fob-off reply that is.
I’m sure there have been discussions but the e-mail doesn’t say exactly who asked for the match to be played at noon on the Sunday.
I bet it wasn’t either of the clubs - so that leaves the coppers, the council & Sky.
A lack of thought all round but good on you for raising the issue. I hope it gathers more noise & momentum.

I think this would be absolutely agreed by 98% of both sets of fans. I think we all agree that that day is bigger than football.

I think the bigger problem here is the minority who could tarnish the day, which would also then harm the reputation of both clubs.

I went to Hallam and pretty much the only thing anyone knows about the uni outside of Sheffield is the knobhead who pissed on the war memorial.

Our fan base is amazing and has time and time again brought be a lot of pride to be part of. That doesn't mean every fan behaves in a way that I can be proud of.

It is also the first derby in a long time so has the potential to spill over.

I’ve thanked them for their reply (more than I’ve had from SYP, Sky, SUFC or SWFC) and have asked if…

A) Was the Saturday at 12 pm not considered as an option? If not, why not.

B) The possibility of moving the kick off back one hour on the Sunday.

Here's me thinking next week's game had been moved for no reason

12.00 noon on Remembrance Day is a horrible time for this game, it needs to be moved.
Nothing surprises me with football.

Should it and will it be a problem? No, fans are generally respectful to the cause and it’s an important part of remembrance

But it really just shouldn’t be on Remembrance Day and certainly not at this time, plenty of other days and times to put football games. This shouldn’t be one of the days for me. Having no football that Sunday would raise the significance. It’s more important nowadays with so much conflict and hate

We do indeed have a choice nowadays and football is becoming far less relevant as it tries to dominate our entire year

Paul Blomfield isn't the MP for Sheffield Central he stood down at the last election. Abtisam Mohammed is the now the MP for the Central constituency.
