Derby got some right hammerings.....just look at this!

The hard luck story of that season is that we couldn't create anything meaningful through midfield to actually try and score.

The defence even without JOC wasn't too bad - hence our close but still losing games.

Strange that it's the same midfield now and we're still not creating.

There's going to be some angry punters IF Slav doesn't change it round now he's got some of his requirements in.

Will be interesting to see what he does next - he doesn't seem the one for sentiment and therefore some of our loveable old boys now need to be pushed out.

Yep, we lost a lot of games because we were crap, not in any way due to bad luck.
We also lost a lot of games narrowly because the opposition did the bare minimum to beat us: score once then watch our ineffective midfield and attack fail to do any damage. It was very much like watching men against boys.

EDIT:
21/38 games - no goals scored
14/38 games - 1 goal scored
3/38 games - 2 goals scored (note - two of those against Man U!)
0/38 games - 3+ goals scored

That is pathetic.

This got twisted into this 'fine margins' nonsense. Teams basically tickled our bellies for a whole season because we were shockingly bad. If it was kids football you'd have stuck your keeper up front against us.

Hard to find anything remotely positive about last season.

Did we concede the fewest goals of any team that has ever finished bottom of the Premier League?

Might have.

Joint fewest (20). Joint most losses (29). Longest winless streak from start of season (17)

No. We conceded 63 in 38 games which is the 6th best bottom side goals against record, bettered by Forest in 92/93 (62 in a 42 game season) and 96/97 (59 in 38); Watford in 06/07 (59); QPR in 12/13 (60) & West Brom in 17/18 (56)

Not far off then.

That was the best I could come up with off the top of my head.

😁

Still think the loss of JOC was a major factor in pur poor performance and relegation. We were very vulnerable in the air without him but generally missed his defensive quailites. But more importantly he was such an important part of our attacking options as overlapping centre half which were never replaced.

I don't think there's much witchcraft to it. We are a club without the resources to have much more than a first eleven. Lose most of those at one time or another and there was nothing behind them of anything like enough quality.

Folks will talk about the failed transfers - and there's truth in that - - but when you think about how much the top clubs spend on just one player - we never got near that.

The tactics may, or may not have been worked out and it didn't help that CW seemed to have a meltdown - but without a decent 11 on the park - that's all conjecture.

Just my opinion, but without the resources to match the opposition, we were always going to struggle once we started picking up injuries to key players.
