Could draw a lower league team in the FA Cup? Eg Rotherham or Barno? could even draw a minnow such as Sheffield Wednesday or that other team that play on the grounds of a Dronfield pub?

TBH minors like 't pigs will be long gone by the time we have to join in the FA cup. We'll probably play our second 11 and focus ont champions league

Very much doubt it. Dirty Corrupt Cheating Leeds have hit the wall. Nobody is tipping WBA. Them or Villa for me. Or maybe Derby.

Derby can beat Leeds over two legs. FLDC can step up for big occasions to be fair, but they'll run out of steam for the final. West Brom on their day should batter anyone, and I think Villa will have a good go at beating Norwich, and continue their unbeaten run, but flounder in the playoffs.

That for me is about it, but the Sky generation now seem to think there are hundreds of these things. Yes, there's fierce rivals like Liverpool and Man Utd, but it isn't a derby. Neither is us and the dirties, or Barnsley or Rovrum or Donny.

It's interesting is the West Midlands. Villa see Birmingham as their derby and vice versa, neither seem to have the same regard for West Brom, though that might have changed in recent years. Wolves and Coventry don't have rivals to be classed as a derby and Walsall don't matter enough to any of them.

Agree, I recently flew from Birmingham airport, the taxi driver was a Villa fan. He also said Villa-Blues is their big derby. He explained that although West Brom is in north Birmingham the rivalry isn’t so big anymore, he said they did have a big rivalry in the 70’s but it’s wore off over time and now the big focus is Villa versus Birmingham City.

He suggested that West Brom’s main derby is probably now with Wolves.

I suppose it depends on what you class as a derby , if you class it as 2 teams from the same city , then every time 2 teams from London play it must be a derby , so arsenal have , Chelsea, spurs, and west ham as derbies and vice versa

London, as a resident for several years I have realised, is a unique football entity. It splits North, East and West in football terms. North is Arsenal and Spurs, East is West Ham and Millwall (docklands derby), West is QPR, Chelsea, Fulham and Brentford. Chelsea have traditionally seen Fulham as their nearest rivals and QPR, Brentford.

South London has Palace and lower clubs like Wimbledon. As the biggest club in South London, Palace have no real derby, so someone invented a rivalry with Brighton. Not a derby at all.

It's a funny one, all this 'derby' malarkey. The media are very keen to use six broader 'regions' of England these days in relation to football, but very few would consider these regions if they were to put a tag on the area they're from. The six regions are NW, NW, WM, EM, SW and SE. Of course, that means the Blades are an NE club.

I'm from Kidderminster and I know of plenty of people who felt aggrieved when Sky (typically, but plenty of others besides) called the Birmingham/Black Country clubs v Stoke a 'West Midlands derby'. Of course, for Stoke, you could say that was the closest to a derby game they got in the PL, but nobody would refer to it as that as the 'West Midlands' term is used far more often to refer far more to the county than the wider region. Similarly, Blades v Newcastle next season could be referred to as a 'North East derby' as they are two sides from the NE region in the PL. Very few fans would think of it that way, as the 'North East' is typically used to refer to a very small area of the NE region, around Tyneside and Wearside.

Dunno about "city rival" - does that mean Newcastle/Sunderland can't be a derby in your book - or Derby/Forest. Not sure their fans would agreee and isn't that the point? If the fans are excited by the match up isn't that more important than an "academic" differentiation between a "derby" and a "local rivalry"?
