Owls v Blades clash in doubt

SHEFFIELD Wednesday's waterlogged pitch has brought an added tension to Saturday's Owls-Blades derby.

Referee Chris Foy took one look at the playing surface yesterday lunchtime and declared it unfit for last night's FA Cup replay with Derby County.

Continuing rain, which is forecast for tomorrow, could throw Sheffield's Championship showdown in jeopardy.

A spokesman for Sheffield Wednesday admitted: "We are in the hands of nature and the amount of rainfall."

Owls manager Brian Laws agreed there was no chance of playing last night and he feared that if the tie had gone ahead the pitch could have been ruined for the rest of the season.

I like this bit

I thought that had happened last season :D

Can they not get a massive tent over the pitch or something?

Seems daft that rain may stop this game, especially when the rainfall hasn't even been that heavy really.

It shows what a poor ground they have when it comes to this sadly.

Apparently their drainage systems were wrecked by the flooding over the summer and they didn't have chance to repair them AND get the pitch relaid in time for the new season.

And really... do you think they can afford anything to cover their pitch up? :)

they couldnt even afford enough matalan tracksuit tops to cover it :D

Well they should have delayed their home games like Coventry did last season till it was re-done. Bet they still claimed the monies off the insurance though to do drainage.

The insurance bloke however wouldn't have been able to clear the standing water in the foundations of the pitch/stadium..... This takes a LONG time to disapeer and therefore any additional rainfall will just turn the surface into a lake after a certain amount of time.

The current pitch is in the same class/make up as the Millenium Stadium uses as a temporary surface for events. The geezer from the company who laid the pitch was to meet with the wednesday grooundsman today.
