Not got time for a full report but a quick summary really. Really disappointing loss but we cannot say it was not coming 2nd half sadly and only one team looked like winning in the end. Not sure what happened 2nd half – it was a shocking performance on and off the ball. We just never turned up and sat back, stopped running, pressing and marking. We gave it away and even though they did not have tons of chances; they had 3 or 4 decent ones and you felt it was coming. After they scored other than the O’Connell chance, not sure we looked like coming back and they saw it out easily. Real shame as first half after the horror start; we were excellent and played some delightful football. We did everything well apart from the final ball. Indeed, the trend of the game was excellent stuff for the most up to the final third and then a shocking over hit or under hit ball. Only one decent final ball; Fleck and we scored.

Outside of this the service was appalling and all were guilty of this. Sharp seemed fed up. I felt the 2nd half was a performance that showed why we may struggle to keep up the top. We simply could not maintain the intensity and play of the first half and against a better side; they took control. As good as we were first half; we were as bad 2nd half. I am not sure anyone came out of any credit 2nd half. A lot saying the subs were wrong, but Wilder had to chance it. Duffy was a liability and did not get on the ball and defensively was not chasing back at all. Granted when he went off, we had no one in that area but he was not getting on it anyway. Coutts looked really poor when he came on and way off the pace. The likes of Washington is not a game changer at all. I got panned for being critical of him when he signed but he is a desperate signing. He is not better than a Lavery or Evans type for me. We don’t have many game changing options in those Duffy/striking areas but it was not the changes that cost us the game. We were 2nd best before and after in the 2nd half. Derby actually broke really well at speed all game and had a lot of chances. They may have been the inferior side first half but still had more clear chances than us and this carried on 2nd half. Henderson made 2 or 3 good saves and they missed some clear-cut chances. We played some lovely stuff but what is the point if we never get a good final ball in.

We are still joint top but today did worry me. The first half concerned me as much as the 2nd in some ways. We played tremendous but did not create any clear-cut chances at all. Then when we lost the momentum and intensity, Derby completely controlled the game and sensed they would win. I felt 2-1 was about right as Wilder said we did dominate more than they did in the respective halves but we did not make clear cut opportunities. Real shame as a bit more thought or accuracy in that final pass and we could have gone in 3-1 up at half time. As it was I still felt we would go on and win but we never came out of the dressing room. They stepped things up. It was not just tactically in terms of pressing us and forcing wing backs/cbs back but the attitude. They got on the ball, played higher up and turned us round. We were 5-10 yards off even in the final third. The time they had on the ball compared to us was clear. Not sure anyone came out and played anywhere near the level they had in the first. So, we lost and have some tough games coming up. The fans on the other side of the city will see we lost when we finally played a decent side and we now have to make sure we can prove we can put it behind us with two big performances at the Lane. Stoke will be a desperate side and that could go both ways. We certainly have to start better and put together a performance over the course of a game not just in one half.

Opponent man of the match – Mount was lively and got into little pockets. He was a Duffy type but with a better end product today. I thought that Waghorn was ok but Marriot was a real threat but he had service unlike Sharp.

Weak link – I think Carson looked ropey all game and the two centre backs are quite immobile but were not tested.

Henderson 6.5/10 – Shaky at times today. Came for two crosses and did not get there and nearly got caught out at the beginning with the kick out. Made one save for the cameras first half and then an excellent one second half.

Freeman 6/10 – First half very good and got forward and caused problems but second half nowhere near close enough to his man on a number of occasions. He was nowhere near on the cross for the goal and this had happened a few times before they scored.

Stevens 6.5/10 – Really good going forward in terms of runs and one twos but his final ball was hopeless. Overplayed often. He cut out one good chance first half but 2nd half he was slow to react so many times and they nipped in and got away from him.

Egan 6.5/10 – Another than did well for spells but half asleep on the goal and a key moment that cost us. Only had one man to mark too. Other than that, he was also slow to react to balls coming in. They won and had a lot of headed chances.

O’Connell 7/10 – Thought he was our best defender. He at least got to the ball first and was on the front foot. He made a few good blocks. He too at times was ball watching when crosses came in though.

Basham 6/10 – Mixed bag. Scored the goal and a few other decent runs but some comical moments when he was caught napping and gave them chances. Did this a few times and overplayed a little bit.

Fleck 6/10 – First half he made the goal with a great run but was one of our poorer players apart from that and he lost Bryson twice on the goal. 2nd half never got on the ball and lost runners. Not his best day aside from the great assist.

Norwood 7.5/10 – Probably a 9/10 first half. Some of the passes were outrageous as he sprayed it hard along the floor or pinged it a few feet off the ground. Made us tick and dictated the play. 2nd half gave it away and struggled when they pressed him and I felt was poor.

Duffy 6/10 – First half he got on it, got into areas and was good but 2nd half he looked slow and disinterested and him not chasing back meant they had an extra man in that area. People say we were poor when he went off but we were poor before he did and 2nd half he looked quite lazy. Shame as first half he was a key man.

Sharp 6/10 – Thought he tried hard with no service. Won a few free kicks and chased things down. Got into some great areas but nothing came into him. Felt a bit sorry for him today.

McGoldrick 6/10 – As above. He linked play a few times but also at times looked a bit lethargic and sloppy. He needed to hold onto it better. Had one chance which he hit straight at the keeper. Thought he may have gone off instead of Sharp really as felt the above was getting into better areas. The fact neither had a clear chance all game despite all the ball we had (first half) sums up how bad our end product was.

Subs –

Coutts – Poor. He looked sluggish and he did not pick up his runner a few times. Also, on the ball had no acceleration. Ok, when we are seeing games out but he is someone who will spring us onto the attack as he is not that type of player. Him and Norwood quite similar. Not sure how that it will work unless Fleck plays just in front.

Clarke – Won a flick on but other than he too had little service. Been a poor season so far.

Washington – Did he have a kick?

Wilder 6/10 – Bad start and non-event 2nd half. First half of course we caused them all sorts of problems and not sure he can be blamed for the terrible final ball or players switching off on the winner but they did change the tactics and we could not really cope. He had to change it but once again the subs actually made us worse – he does not seem to be making an impact with subs at the moment.

Referee – Thought he gave them every 50-50 all game. He barely gave us a free kick all game. Mind you 2nd half we never put a tackle in really and the other way not sure we drew a tackle.

Pretty fair reflection of the game although I think u r a bit harsh on Hendo.

For me our 2 biggest problems are a lack of pace...still....and the inability of our strikers to make chances of their own. They need it on a plate from good crosses or through balls and that won't always happen. We need a nippy striker who can run at defences and until we get one I think we will be too predictable against the top sides.

Maybe but two moments of madnees nearly cost us 2 goals. He made one great save - the other was regulation.

Totally agree on your other point. We struggled against the better sides last year due to the lack of pace or different option. We pass, pass, pass and that is great but we have no ball over the top; no target man as a different option to hit if the passing does not work. It means teams will just sit in and we have to play through them. This is hard to do. Derby knocked the ball over the top and got runners in and had a lot more chances. Our midfield are great but other than Duffy sometimes; none run onto the ball. They do their best play behind the other team. Was hoping Woodburn was that player (a Mount or Dack type) but it has not happened. Be tempted to give him another chance in the next week or so with so many games.

Pretty much agree with all of that DB. Thought Fleck deserved a higher mark but it was fine margins today, Derby look a good side in the making and will be top six at the end of the season I think. We were poor today and it looks a bit worrying with a number of ageing players and nobody stepping up to push them. We look mid table imo. Onwards and upwards.

Great report as always
Complety agree in that we are missing that peice of the puzzle when it's not happening

We badly need that Duffy mark 2 to give us options

Was disappointed with the substitutions as in my opinion sharp and Duffy on the pitch will always provide a threat even if not quite 'at it' , always seems to be these subs also

I agree space was developing but could coutts not have come on for maybe fleck (who as you say above , apart from the great run and assist )was very poor by his standards

We are so reliant on Duffy, no matter how much the clueless pundits seemed determined to slate him.

We lack any real pace, for all the arguments of Brooks going missing last year, he consistently brought pace. We play possession football better than any side in this division, but then we have to, it's our only way of breaking sides down, we were never going to replicate their raw pace tonight .

We need more pace and more threat in front of the goal, soon as Sharp went off, we turned to each other and said "where the fuck are the goals guna come from!?"....
I don't honestly think we had any stand out players tonight, if I had to choose one, I'd say Egan or JOC, but, it's always the same when we return from a break, we just don't turn up until the following week, don't know what it is, but I'm expecting us to take Stoke apart on Tuesday now.

On the one hand, I love how we go about our business in a quiet, unassuming manner. We play good football and I love taking the big clubs, the ignorant, clueless pundits by surprise.

On the other hand, I wish the sky pundits would take their noses out of the arses of Derby and more specifically, Lampard. They seemed to lack any real knowledge of United at times, it's disrespectful. They were the same with Newcastle the other season, blindly frothing over them.

To be fair to Derby, they were at home and they were up for it from the start. That Derby side are good, but they've spent big to play a style of football that is occasionally as good as ours. Mount, Wilson, Waghorn, Huddlestone, Marriott, they don't come cheap on wages, fees and loan fees.

To see our side competing and on a budget, is nothing short of brilliant, we battered them for possession. Our side of nobodies, the unfancied and the unheard of, but with more togetherness, passion and commitment than any other club in the division makes me incredibly proud, and to hear the fans singing loud tops it off.

Now, if only we'd turned up in the second half ;)

I think thats the nagging worry...even though we are joint top...and the current eleven are good...if a few key ones have an off day then we will struggle to beat the better teams. We have to improve our final ball. If we do not all the lovely passing is pointless. I actually felt sorry for the defence a bit today. The midfield did not pick up runners all game and 2nd half gave them no protection whatsoever. I really felt that Duffy, Coutts, Fleck and Norwood all were not in the game on or off the ball 2nd half and this meant we lost the game. They had chances ever before the one they scored as we sat off and they were playing balls through or runners getting beyond us.

Possession was 50-50 according to the stats. We battered them first half but did sod all with it when it mattered. The football is great to watch but is frustrating too as we should scored 4 or 5 goals in the first half but actually never looked likee scoring really when you take a step back despite thinking how superb we were. That's a concern - that we can play that well but never really look like scoring aside from the goal. I might get pelters for this but the likes of Mount, Wilson, Waghorn, Marriott at the top of the pitch is why they will probaby finish above us. We signed Johnson, McGoldrick (done well), Woodburn and Washington. We continue to go for the cheap as chips (granted Woodburn decent signing seemingly at the time) options and this approach means it will be around 10th again end of the season for me. Shame as Wilder is a tremendous manager. Not infallible as he showed today but gets the most out of what he has.

It is brilliant to see us up at the top with the budget we have but will be hard to maintain it due to the lack of depth for when our good players have dips. Oh for a Lawrence type off the bench or some of the WBA/Boro options they can bring in when players dip in form or they need to rotate. Credit to those teams for spening and having a go. Our cautious, penny pinching ways means we are relying on Wilder to work miracles again. He can only take us so far. Unless the board properly back him in January to give us that quality that can supplement/replace at times Duffy/Sharp then we will be around the same positon I feel. Cue criticism on here maybe from others but what I feel - it is so tight at the top and as SWFC proved you can go from 6th to mid table in a matter of hours. Today was a big missed opportunity. I felt a bit like the Hull game last year (nowhere near in terms of performance) but the 2nd half the players did not turn up but as they showed over the course of last season; they have struggled to maintain in consistently. The game today was a microcosm of our seaoson last year really. Hope they can prove me wrong over the coming months but think we will see now we play the better teams we may struggle to put together those runs of wins.

At times we are a joy to watch and that what make it so frustrating. It is right there; the chance to possibly go up even this season but we have not quite done enough in the window to really give us that serious chance I feel.

The Washington signing to me was the tell tale sign that this board will not properly back our superb manager to give us a legitimate chance to last the pace. Shame.

Nothing much between the teams, very even game decided by a fluke run by Marriot.

Agree with all that.
Sadly you're last paragraph will prove to be the reason we are as high up the food chain as we ever will be whilst the current owners remain at our club.
For some really crazy reason come January many dewy eyed does on here will trot out the usual lists of targets that may as well include the casts of all the Superhero films such is the absolute ridiculous likelihood of anyone who would fire us to the land of untold riches likely to arrive.

McGoldrick,Washington, Johnson and Woodburn two cheap signings and two loans yet apparently the Brooks money hasn't been touched that says it all really. McGoldrick has done ok and Johnson might be useful but the other two look complete pap. I'd take George Moncur and Kieffer Moore from the dingles in a heartbeat ahead of Washington and Woodburn

Cannot disagree with any of that mate, well said.

Good assessment DB. I thought that typically for us after a fucking 'International Break' (cheers for that UEFA) we come out asleep and they capitalised on that. Given our bite after this and some pretty fucking excellent football thereon and our deserved equaliser, I felt we'd come out second half and cut Derby apart. Instead it was Birmingham City at home again. We deserved the loss and would have been grateful for the point, which is what I felt the game plan was after about an hour of us just playing so poorly.

Henderson 6/10. Can be outstanding but fuck me when he miscalculated that cross I was like, "What the FUCK are you doing, laddo?"
Stevens 6/10. He and Freeman did well in the first half. His tackle in the second half was about the only good thing he did after the break mind.
Basham 5/10. Not his best game, despite the goal. Bash is a Lane legend but fuck me sometimes he looks class, and others he's like the Basham we signed from Blackpool again
Egan 6/10. Wasn't much impressed
O'Connell 6.5/10. The best of the back three, but he and Egan need to ask themselves how a basic, curled cross from the flank drifted between them to allow Elliott to steal in with a flick
Freeman 5.5/10. He's better than Baldock IMHO and puts a shift in but positionally today he was left wanting at times. Second half he looked knackered
Fleck 6.5. Does all the hard yards in the middle and laid on a great goal
Norwood 5/10. Probably get slated for this, but I am still struggling with what he brings to the side. Today he was okay in spells, but I felt gambled with passes and gave the ball away too much for my liking. In the second half the game just passed him by
Duffy 6.5/10. Our best threat. Wrongly subbed
McGoldrick 6/10 All forward balls went to him, and he did his best, but it was always too far from Billy Sharp or any supporting AM support#
Sharp 5/10. Only because once again, he got nowt x nowt regarding balls to him to take

Clarke - Pointless sub
Coutts - Poor game
Washington - why?

Wilder - 5/10. Back to the drawing board. Missed opportunity to get some daylight between us and the pack

Crowd - 10/10. Outsung their sorry bunch of wankers

Agree with all of that. A shame to get ourselves back into it and then not build on that in the second half.

Shame.

I would rather say this was a bad day at the office fo us. We are not going to play at our best every match. We were so slow out of the blocks and gave them a goal and then we seemed to give the ball away and a number of players were not on their game for whatever reason.
I don’t think it’s just about spending money. Do you really think that if we had spent £5 or 6 million on Waghorn plus £40 or £50 k a week wages that we would have won today. I thought he looked decidedly average and wouldn’t have got in our team. It’s about getting the right players. Ollie Norwood is a far better buy at a fraction of the cost of Waghorn. We move on and hopefully beat Stoke on Tuesday.

We were fantastic first half and dominated the game soon after they scored.

They came out strongly second half and I expected us to take back control but it never happened, I’m not sure why.

My expectations probably went too high after going top last week but today has brought me back down to earth. We aren't going to be serious contenders but we will continue to be a decent Championship side who are usually good to watch. Obviously we all want more but the lack of wins against the top sides in the last 2 seasons tells a story and we just fall short of the very best in this league.

It's a huge shame the board have ruined any chance of adding the few bits we need to this team and not giving our excellent manager the resources to make a real fist of it.

I’d say Freeman, Stevens, Fleck and Duffy all seemed to drop their standards in the 2nd half. That had a major effect. Also, whereas Coutts’s substitution on and the formation change seemed a decent move at Blackburn, it had a negligible effect on the half today. No idea on the reasons why. We generally looked sluggish/ponderous second half.

Worryingly age appears to have caught up with a few An aging, slow squad

Good points from today: first half we responded so well to going behind, and you could just feel a goal coming. It makes me proud to see United playing that. Also, for me, Stevens put in another good performance, particularly the first half. Wasted a few chances to put quality balls in, but he was up and down his wing all game. Saying that, I was hoping Johnson would come on in the second half. Good for running at tired legs. Thought the fans sounded great, too, over here in Japan land.

Bad points: from the start of the second half, our normal intensity was missing. We weren’t really pressing, midfield weren’t getting on the ball, and we looked worryingly tired as a team. I’m also not a fan of double substitutions when we’re not chasing the game. Saying that Coutts for Duffy made sense, and Clarke for Sharp is not an unreasonable substitution. But, as stated above, Coutts and Norwood together didn’t work this time, and although I’ve always liked the idea of Fleck in time moving into the Duffy position, he doesn’t hold onto the ball in the same way, and maybe doesn’t find those same pockets of space. It felt like they had a plan to almost man-mark Norwood, which meant he was coming even deeper than normal for the ball. He needs to be getting the ball further up the field if we want to see the full backs further up the field. If teams continue doing that, it’s something we need to address.

Overall, it was disappointing, but if we’d held on for the point, reckon we’d all be pretty happy despite the second half performance. For some reason, too, I don’t mind us not being top at the minute. We have things that we need to improve and address, and maybe being top, it’s easy to say “we’re fine as we are”. Anyway, thank fook the international break is done with and we’re back on Tuesday. UTB.

Seemed to me, as per some other games where we've faded 2nd half, we ran around so much in the first half we had no energy left in the second.

Not pacing ourselves and all too often after lots of interchanging and energy expended its a lofted cross to the far post or above everyone and we're not that good on far post headers anyway. Change the script please.

Derby in contrast make much quicker progress to the edge of the box and get fast balls in along the deck and attack space to create opportunities. Derby deserved to win, efforts on goal win games not slow fluffy ineffective possession in the final third.

Tomori and Keogh?! Immobile? Those two too often rely on their pace to get out of trouble. Not testing that was maybe a problem for you - but immobile they most certainly aren’t.

I was pleasantly disappointed in your performance last night - we grew back into it second half but I felt that you let us do that. Don’t think we saw your lot at anywhere near your best because you wouldn’t be second playing like that every week.

Good luck for the rest of the season. Best away following we’ve had this season.

Was about to say, Tomori looks like one of the most athletic CB's in the league.

Derby are lucky that they've loaned 3 prem quality players, while Woodburn hasn't worked out for us.

First half very decent without enough end product.
Second half more like Hull away last season.
Hard to reconcile the two halves and the difference in attitude from the players who suddenly looked timid, lacking in confidence and negative was bizarre.
Sadly not sure Coutts is ready to return and it maybe we have to have another look at Woodburn if and when Duffy is taken off. As it is though, it looks as if when Duffy isn't playing or isn't on it, we're not playing.

But if we’d have beaten Derby no doubt we’d be winning the league and the best United team since the war.
With the respect the over reaction from some of our fans is laughable. We’ve now won 8 out of 11 since bringing in Norwood but the conclusion is we’re not good enough. All the neutrals and bookies who have no bias either way, still think we are serious contenders, agree not top 2 but big favourites for top 6.

The big positive for us is our consistency. Yes we might lose to the better teams BUT unlike the better teams
We are very consistent and tend to always beat the bottom teams.
Another big positive is that there are no outstanding teams, think a really low points total will gain promotion because many teams can beat each other. Consistency in performance is the key and that’s one of our strengths.

Our negative is the lack of individual quality. We rarely score goals from nothing and never long range shots.
But in today’s market quality costs.
What do you actually mean by the board have ruined the chance of promotion?
Do you want them to spend 20 or 30 in the January window. How about paying the new players £40K a week?
Then if we don’t get promotion we risk doing a Portsmouth and going bust.
All that patient hard work down the drain due to putting all our money on red gambling at the roulette table. Madness.
