I always thought that Birmingham sang it - what do they sing?

Dont they do Keep right on to the end of the road or summat.
I was told they sing Delilah because a pub landlady was going to lob them out of a pub if they sang anymore football songs ,so someone sand Delilah and its stuck. One for Lee Mack and david Mitchell I think.

She would probably have given a penalty in the first half. Disgusting decision. Yet sky have omitted it from their replay package so I can't make my mind up.

Why does stoke sing Delilah?

"It all began at an away game in Derby (in April 1987) where we were all in a pub and the police asked us not to sing a song with swear words on. So we put Delilah on the jukebox, and I got up on a table and started singing it. We sang it in the ground and it just went from there."22 Apr 2020

That’s close to my understanding, though according to the legend it was coppers in a Derby pub telling them not to sing songs with swear words in. Delilah was on the jukebox, so they joined in with that as a wholesome alternative, apparently oblivious to the irony of the criminality involved in Delilah’s early demise πŸ™‚

They do it well and I like the idea of it having absolutely no connection with Stoke City or football. They also have a slogan they all use, a bit like WAWAW and equally brainless:- Be Loyal, Be Proud, Be Stoke - vacuous, meaningless nonsense. Quite why anyone would want to Be Stoke is beyond me πŸ™‚

I don’t mind them singing Delilah but they murdered it, totally tuneless, it sounded as though they were trying to finish before they had begun.

That is an issue with loads of fans. Ours are terrible for it. The younger the fan, the quicker they go.

The β€œoh Lord Michael Brown” was the worst for that. Sounded crap because of a missing β€œMichael Brown My Lord, Michael Brown” in the middle”.

β€œCan’t help falling in Love with you” meets a similar fate, should start with β€œWise men say….” rather than just the same few lines repeated.

The only ever sports crowd I've known sing in tune, in unison, was the Taffs at the England-Aussie test at Cardiff in 2015.

I know the Welsh have a reputation for being decent at singing, but that rep definitely held true that day.
