Defensive Opponents

I'm sure our stunning performance against Villa did not go unnoticed by any of the clubs in our league and , as a result , you don't need to be Nostradamus to predict that from now on ,many of them will come to the Lane with a heavily defensive formation .

To overcome this is going to require patience , not only from the players but also the fans , some of whom don't seem to appreciate just how hard it can be to break down teams set up almost entirely on the basis of not conceding .

Even the likes of Man City and Chelsea have found it difficult to overcome far inferior teams in these situations and I very much hope that our fans will recognise this difficulty and keep behind the team when they are struggling to break the opposition down , rather than demonstrating some of the frustration and negativity which has been all too apparent in the past .

Agree, and I'm hoping this is where players like Woodburn come in, to help unlock tricky defences.

Our increased quality from set pieces should help here too, as a team parking the bus is likely to give away free kicks around the edge of the area, which we will need to make the most of.

This is why it's great we've got Woodburn, Johnson, and Washington. Said it in another thread but those 3 plus some Norwood deliveries are going to pull defences all over the place.

With Norwood’s passing and Coutts to come back I would rather teams did come and sit back against us than attack us with Pacey forwards and wingers.

No worries from me. With the likes of Woodburn, Fleck and Duffy running at them they'll be sitting so deep they'll end up in the BLLT. That will negate their offside trap and Leon will come good again and Billy will have a field day. We didn't do too badly against the lesser teams last year who set up like this, it was the teams in the upper echelons we struggled against and hopefully the Villa game has put that one to bed.

We were saying this last season,
I'd be happy with teams coming purely to defend because if they do I always feel like we'll break through eventually as long as we're playing with the intensity that seems to be coming back
