Ok first I would like to say this was posted during the Brentford game.

I recently did this post,
http://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/signings.33991/page-2#post-590112

where a few of you said we don't need anymore defenders. Well we do.

The evidence :
The Swindon game, without Harry Maguire, the defence was a awful. I believe with Harry the 2 goals would have never been scored. I also believe we would have scored more as Harry tends to start the attacks.
This is why we need a CB, to step in for Harry when he's suspended or injured or even gone off to Man U ;) and lets be realistic , Collins needs Harry, he isn't a leading figure in defence.

Thank you
Ashton Kirby

3...2...1 go!!!

word of advice, drop this issue

the defence is fine, todays game proved it, what was also proved today is our need for a striker.

I don't know what else to say, to even suggest we need a defender more than a striker is ludicrous to me.

One game?

What about the 10 or 11 consecutive clean sheets before that?

The defence is not a priority. It hasn't been for the last three seasons.

Funnily enough, on the way home tonight, we said how well they'd done without Maguire and that we hadn't really missed him as such in the two games.

Key thing for me especially in tonights match ,we never looked like winning the match because we didnt have a goalscorer and if it wasnt for the defence we would have lost it and they are 2nd in the league end of chat:rolleyes:

The lad has an opinion which he is entitled to.

He is but if it makes no sense it is correct to question. I wonder if it weren't another posters son if the same leniancy would be applied? I for one think it is utterly sensless to be looking at defenders when we have gone many games without conceding and its generally been missed opportunities that have cost us.

Harry was always going to be missed, thought the defence was all over the place for first 20 mins but gradually settled down and put in a battling performance, even the jittery Freeman began to pull himself together towards the end. Can't agree about Collins though, thought he marshalled the makeshift defence superbly. Nice little cameo from Kennedy at the end as well. Murph MOM. Well earned point in the end, against the best footballing side I've seen so far including Wolves, didn't have their shooting boots on though tonight luckily.

Brayford MOM for me then Murphy ,although I think he should have attacked the right back a bit more as he was on booking.
We missed Maguires attacking threat more than his defensive ,if only we could play Brayford-Maguire -Collins-Harris ,how good a back 4 is that.

a agree. Three of those will be available for the next game, i'm not sure how long harris is out though. Hopefully back for the semi at least.

Freeman is good cover but right footed and since Harris went off we have conceded goals from our left which we didn't do at all when he was playing. If Brayford is unattainable I would be happy to start next season with Freeman-Collins-Maguire-Harris.

I also agree Freeman is good cover, except for a few instances today when he should have just wacked it clear instead of trying to find a man, I am very confident in the guys ability.

We've had 10 clean sheets in the last 12 matches.

I really don't think our defence is a problem.

We set up very defensively, with most men behind the ball, and Brentford still had a number of good opportunities. On another night we wouldn't have been so lucky.

Davies is not a right back.

We are coping - just about - with our current defensive absences, but I'd be happier with more defensive cover. That said, I don't know how close Hill and Harris are to coming back.

It'd be nice to have another striker. Of course it would. So has said every football fan since the dawn of time. However, no striker would have made our first half performance any better. I wonder whether that was partly a result of us setting up defensively to protect our back four.

I agree with everything except this part.

We couldn't get out our own half for most the first half, this was because Paynter was too sluggish, offered no running and when the ball did come to him he lost it. To say we wouldn't have played better if we had a decent outlet up front is wrong in my opinion.

If we had somebody to hold it up, our wingers would have got forward more and we would have created more chances.

I think the distance between Brayford and Collins was too big for Swindon's opener. Of course we'll never know if Harry would have moved over quicker.

We kept a clean sheet against, in my opinion, the best team in the league (they looked much better than Wolves). And we did this with a Right Back at Left Back. A Right Back at Centre Half and a Right Midfielder at Right Back. Our defence is fine, whoever plays.

I'm sure Clough knows that we have a lot of loans in that area and will be looking at permanent signings, whoever they are. Right now, this season, we need a striker. I thought Paynter was awful last night.

Paynter!!awful last night!!stop praising the lad, there isnt a word what can describe his performanceo_O

Paynter never went 'to' the ball always waited, slow, and second half couldn't be arsed to chase down for the ball, I hope he was injured, because if not that was a shocking showing of either fitness or attitude. Looked like a player who'd just signed a 3 year contract not one who was going to be out of work in the summer

Aren't you making his point for him? I agree strikers are the number 1 priority in terms of what the team needs, but when we lose Brayford, then we are short in terms of depth in defence for next season. And that's assuming we do hang on to Harry.

Hopefully Terry Kennedy continues his progress, but otherwise, we'll need to address the squad depth in defence after the season.

As has been said already, 10 clean sheets from 12 is evidence enough that our defence is fine. That back 4 of Brayford, Collins Maguire and Harris was sublime while it lasted, and I'd like to see that for the rest of the season, whenever Harris gets back. The forward situation is far more relevant. Paynter was really poor last night, Porter only slightly better and Baxter isn't even a proper striker. We haven't had a top forward since Evans, which is a bit depressing.

Only seen Kennedy Twice but I think he could do the job now, and will improve rapidly with first team experience.
Last night for the short time he was on I thought he choked off the left wing menace..
The last time when he covered for Harry at center-half, the only time I've seen him in a full match he grew into the game and was commanding.
My worry is that we have so much cover in defense now that under normal circumstances players like him won't get the chance to develop.

I think Freeman should be signed permanently, I like him. It also sounds like Davies will be here next season (if his latest interview is anything to go by)

That means we would start next season with:

Maguire
Collins
Harris
Hill
Freeman
Davies
Kennedy

So can't really see an issue with the back 4 quite frankly. Then if we CAN sign Brayford (still think he's out of reach' we would have a plethora of choice at the back. However, we currently have 2 strikers at the club, Porter and Paynter, one is on loan and the other is.... well, Porter.

So how anyone can't see strikers is a priority seems odd to me.

What seems even odder is that NC doesn't seem worried ?
In fact the only forward he's brought in makes Porter look England class !!!!

He's not worried because he has no reason to be. He's said recently that he'll be looking at this in the summer, and I suspect he and his staff have already started the search.

Calmly delivering success - it's the Nigel style.

But by putting off the search has he lost a golden opportunity for success this season ?

Only time will tell...

I don't believe there was a golden opportunity for success when we were lying bottom of the table in February! Again, he has overachieved, which has almost been detrimental as it has overinflated expectations. We have never been anywhere near a top 6 team this year

Obviously, Clough would have accepted a place in the Play Offs, and FA Cup Semi when he first came. But personally i think he's quietly relieved we wont be reaching the play offs, as it gives him more time to build the squad he wants. If we got back into the championship we would see a lot of player rotation and that will only hurt team spirit.

I'm happy where we are at the moment, and the semi is just a big unexpected but welcome bonus.

I agree, being in this division next season will give him a better chance of molding his team together and at the right price ...
He seems like the kind of manager who could dig out a few rough diamonds from the lower leagues and this division will give him the time to polish them....
