After years of drinking in the Devonshire Arms at the bottom of Ecclesall Road the time has come to move on, the pub is fast becoming a dive with no decent ale, no food, no sky, roof is leaking in and its never cleaned!!

We are looking for a decent boozer that lets the kids in as there is 6 adults n 6 kids in our group, we cannot think of anywhere but to be fair we only ever have drunk in the Dev

Any suggestions as an alternative would be appreciated

Depends on what you want as 'decent beer'?
If it is a good pint pulled from a normal range ala Carling, Smiths, Strongbow then Sheaf house is a very friendly child friendly pub with a garden bit with football nets/activity frame for them to play on the back. It's also probably the largest pub near the ground.

IF you're wanting traditional beers with a good varying range, then I would say the Dev Cat on division street. Still within easy walking distance, but not much activity for the children.

Dev cat don't allow under 14s in.

University Arms is a good pub in that general direction, large pub, nice garden, good food, they allow kids in and they always have 4 or 5 beers on (unfortunately I live on the other side of town, or I'd always be in there before a game).

The Rutland, Brown Street. Plenty of family groups in, relaxed and not too crowded. Good range of Beers and lagers and an all-new quality menu. NCP car park just opposite it if driving, three minutes walk - just past the Music Centre thing - from the train station if you're not.

Raul - Not on commission, but bloody well should be.

Does the Rutland let kids in under the new management, and does it have Sky? I've not had a chance to go in since it reopened. An alternative would be the Red Lion on Charles Street.

Hop across the road and go in the Ponama. Seems to tick most of your boxes (although not sure about the ale as it is generally a student pub)

Thanks for the suggestions, Santos is the Ponama child proof!!?

Hippy, no problem with kids either before or after. Don't think they have Sky though, but less crowded than the Red Lion.

Hi YamYam, the Red Lion on Charles Street is worth considering. Child friendly and (more importantly) decent beer. Always a good atmosphere and plenty of Blades and families around. Never any trouble or at least, not in the 25 years I've been going.

Or you could take them to Legends of the Lane. Beer crap, but SKY TV, chip butties, table football and various other kids stuff, a Blades player comes and has photos taken with the kids. Open from 1. First week packed, second week, just a handful of families! Certainly worth an occasional visit , if you can put up with the beer. :)

Thanks for all the ideas will have to check them all out over the next few matches, anywhere has got to be better than the Devonshire at the moment

And if the worst comes to the worst try the Copthorne

They've got sky, plenty of space for kids (there were some running around last time I was there), choice of ale but its pricey.

Also be prepared to speak Polish or Portuguese when ordering your overpriced beer

It always looks more than half empty, so I had always assumed the bouncers on the door were there to stop people who weren't hotel residents from using the place as a bar. Is that not so?

No, anyone can go in as far as i'm aware

Yep, anyone can have a drink there. Decent food too, though expensive.

I dunno if they'd approve of fans getting pissed and singing though.

The Pomona usually has a decent pint of Black Sheep and often one or two others. The other good thing about the Pomona is that the food is cheap.

Cheers Santos

We all went to the Pomona today and had a great time so cheers!!

Unfortunately we are on the look out for another pub as The Pomona has gone downhill in the last few months and by looks of how empty it is everyone has moved on, were assuming to Sheaf Island but if anyone got any other recommendations we would appreciate it

The Golden Lion, Copthorne or the Sheaf would be my selections.

Went to the Sheaf pre donny and my mates liked it, I thought it was a bit shite and would prefer to drink in the Copthorne over the Sheaf.

Golden Lion is the winner for me, but never much room inside so be prepared to stand outside and unless you're nesh, brave the Sheffield winter

The quality of the people, the beer overcome all that, plus there is a "buzz" from being outside pre match

The Dev Cat now allow in children of all ages prior to the match.

Sometimes nip in the Pomona to use the bog after the match and there's never more than a couple of people in there. Don't know if it's still full of students during the week but if it's not, it must be a cert to close down soon.

Champs lets kids in. Always got some great beer offers and Blades season ticket holders qualify for their loyalty card discounts. Food is good in there and they have every match on TV.

The Pomona is dying on its arse. Rude, dispirited staff. Empty. Charmless.

I'm staggered it's open at all.
