In that 34 years, Coventry

(a) got into Europe
(2) won the cup
(3) had a number of relegations battles, IN ALL OF WHICH THEY STAYED UP!!!
(4) Got to a few semis as well I believe.

Would any sane person really prefer United's record over that 34 years to Coventry's?

I have to agree with m'learned friend here, I'd have Coventry's last few decades over ours.

And if it meant Brian Kilcline played for us, so much the better.

He's more Dumbledore than Custer these days.

A "football friend" of mine was a big pal of Killer's - a thoroughly nice bloke apparently with some cracking stories.

I'm amazed he didn't sign for us aged 36, he would have fitted our profile perfectly, good servant to several clubs but well past it when he came to us.

If we were sane we wouldn`t be supporting united now, would we?

Dear footballing players,

If we do get to Wembley, how about you getting off your fat arses and attempting to score ?

I've been to all the games and apart from Brown's missed penalty I can't remember a clear cut chance.

We need to help ourselves before requesting divine intervention.

You forgot the shitload of penalties at the end last year!!! :-(

It wasn't a free kick it was a cross from Wise that 2 defenders failed to stop and (it has to be said), Tracey really should have stopped it at his near post. Check this out at 4.32 if you dare :-(

Bloody hell, we've had Wigan highlights and now Chelsea highlights this week. All we need now is footage of David Hopkin trying his luck and I'll be straight off down the quack's for some prozac.

Maybe our ginger-haired striker could be the one in 2013 ?

Although I commented on another thread that I'm not really bothered about what the home kit looks like as long as it has red and white stripes because I wouldn't buy one, I will say that the white and black Wards one with no red on it, that we wore for the first time in that video is the nicest shirt we've ever had, in my opinion.

With you on this.

At home SUFC should play in traditional red and white stripes

Away, if a clash, it should be white shirt, black shorts (although white shorts acceptable), white socks.

I must admit at Crewe this week when they walked out with the "preferred" away kit on I thought: it looks great maybe we'll get a performance to match.

Got to be careful with these positive thoughts, they only lead to disappointment

i remember being at wembley for this, absolute debacle of a match. spent a while talking to a palace fan on the tube on the way back who was a decentish bloke commiserating us

Add this to being easily the most underacheving, given resporces, club in the country. This seems constant whoever is in charge and whoever the players are.

And so typically of United we don't even get any kudos for being long-suffering fans.

If you asked 100 average football fans to name the most underachieving club by size in the country and we'd be lucky if one said us.

Outside of S Yorks or in the media - we are anonymous considering our size. Perception means a lot in terms of attracting investment and players and support but we seem, like most things, to get the shitty end of the stick on this.

No matter how shit we get we can't even get known for being shit.

I am not being obtuse. I don't think anyone looking at it objectively would consider that we have had a better last 45 years than Coventry.

I also agree that some clubs (Stockport and Luton are good examples) have plummeted further than we have, but that wasn't my point. My point was that the circumstances in which we have been relegated/failed to gain promotion seem to be uniquely tragic (the missed penalties, last minute goals etc I mentioned).

Well you know the way to solve that one. Have an annual ceremony like a certain Lancashire club I can think of. I don't see one club from West Yorkshire who IMO had one of the most tragic occurrances constantly reminding everyone of the tragic loss at their ground.

That's because most of the people asked would be no-nothing Premier League fans who would come up with ridiculous responses like saying Spurs are the biggest under achievers.

As for heartbreak, there are dozens of teams worse off than we are. Our misfortunes are nothing compared to the likes of poor old Stockport, to give just one example. And look at Coventry. One top six finish since 1967 and not a single highlight since relegation from the PL in 2000.

Coventry won the FA Cup in 1987!

Footballing gods you bunch of muppets. You got the wrong team!? It was Brentford playing in red and white yesterday, not SUFC, that you so cruelly denied yesterday!? In one foul swoop you gave them belief and then crushed it. In that one incident you have blown Brentford's promotion hopes. A penalty in injury time and they were going up, but all of a sudden they have another 3 games to play and must be devested. How on earth are they going to pick themselves up from that??! Very naughty TFG.

But I actually see your cunning plan. You don't fool Ollessendro (though I did not see what happened yesterday coming!?). Give United a chance and the snatch it at the last minute. I'll bet that you let us somehow sneak past Yeovil. The Somerset set bunch will have their cider poisened, a combine harvester will crash into the team bus or they will simply choke on the 'big occassion'. Roll on the final and some belief for SUFC as Brentford get beat by Swindon. After the Blades took Swindon apart recently, then surely they can do it again (even at Wembley). Get the Blades fans thinking they have a chance and then boom!?

I am not falling for it!! Fuck off you bastards!!?

I see the plan now Footballing Gods, keep the teams in red n white stripes separate in the semi finals, just because they both have swords on the club badge it must be really hard to known which one to fuck over. This year you are going to do down two teams for the price of one.
Just to give both set of fans hope you keep us apart, after finishing third Brentford fans must surely think they have had their bad luck and can still do it. Us Blades not quite so confident are hoping we can squeeze past Yeovil and the do a fast fading Swindon in the final. But we know should we get to Wembley Brentford will be waiting for us a dream come true for their fans. But here comes the cruel twist for both lots of fans United beat Brentford on penalties to break the hearts of the Londoners who were easily third in league one.
Us Blades go wild but when the celebrations die down it slowly dawns on us the Football Gods did not forget about us afterall, we are sentenced to a year in the Championship and McCabe still sells Harry and George to pay the wages of some more 30+ journeymen. The inexperienced Morgan is found to be way out of his depth and with this squad of losers and no marks is powerless to stop us losing 3, 4, and 5 nil every other week and we are relegated by Easter once more the laughing stock of football.

Yer can't fool me yer bastards !!!

Yes, poor old Coventry, 34 consecutive years in the top division from 1967 -2001. I think I would swap that for the 5 promotions we acheived from Divisions 2,3 and 4 in that period.

Coventry also won the FA Cup during living memory.

We actually had a few clear cut chances in the second half v Wolves. I think Tonge hit the post with a free kick and someone had a shot kicked off the line. That second half performance was by far our best in any play off final.

And I think Page blasted over the bar when he looked pretty certain to score.
