DEANO - Emotionally Intelligent Legend

I went to Elland Rd about 1985 and being stood behind a couple of young black lads when a couple of bananas were thrown our way. I was much angrier than they were but who the fuck took bananas to a football match to chuck at people?

Racist cunts.

There's no other way to say it, and it isn't 'virtue signalling'. Its a world of human wrong to think less of anyone because of their skin colour, beliefs and lifestyle. It's a human crime to display those beliefs. We just didn't think bad of it back then because it was 'normalised'.

I love Brian Deane.

I have a Leeds friend and all his mates and him love him too.

He’s ace.

This is maybe a bit harsh (if understandably so), in the sense that, surely, plenty of those involved in racist chanting back then learnt the error of their ways and came to regret it.

The last two sentences are perfect though.

Proud that the great Deano's one of our own, & proud that he's happy for that to be the case. Because, given the emotional scars he still bears (& his lack of employment opportunities, despite the excellent job he did at Sarpsborg), you wouldn't blame him at all for turning his back on football for good.

An emotional Deano there - you can see the years of abuse focused into a few painful & very sobering seconds.
Not an easy watch.
The obvious abuse is much less visible now thank goodness but I do wonder how much is hidden & still impacts football. That saddens me.
I started watching football properly when Regis & Cunningham were in full flow for sweat Brom & they were a sight to behold.
RIP Cyrille

I can, I remember amongst others Noel Blake getting dogs abuse, monkey chants and bananas thrown at him when playing for Pompey against us in c.84, 85. The favourite chant on John Street was ni##er, ni##er lick my boot. It sticks with me to this day.

I have to say that the guys who were being abused were in general amazingly tolerant of the bullshit they had to put up with. I know it was a different time, but it really is a stain on football and society in general how this was allowed to happen, mainly unchallenged. Maybe this explains some of the over zealousness on any language/actions that are interpreted as racist nowadays.

Deano came across really well in the interview and obviously feels that he owes Cyril a lot.

RIP Cyril.
No wonder you moved to NZ.
Can't blame you after experiencing that. Ignorance and football go hand in hand everywhere.

Read Deano's comments on black managers. That's how it's operating now. Oh and Peter Beardsley.

remember once in the bassett days there was chanting going on and a young lad turned toward the kop and shouted ‘how do you think deano feels you f@cking idiots’
silence. not heard anything since tbh

What a great human being Deano is. A proper Blades hero!

'Blades hero?' According to the Beeb, he was a 'Leeds, Sheffield United and England legend'.

I remember watching an FA Cup replay from the Pontefract Road end among the Barnsley supporters in 1990 and hearing at first hand the disgusting racial abuse (from monkey noises to foul mouthed chants) to which Deane and Agana were subjected virtually non-stop throughout the game.

as late as '94 at burnley in the fa cup i seem to remember, certain players taking awful abuse from the home fans.

Hmm. Barnsley and Burnley. Throw in Wedenesday and I can see a pattern emerging...

Deano And Aggers were pure class, remember watching em on a cold tuesday night from the kop both slotting in a hatrick...in a cup game against Carlilse I think...
Great tribute from Deano
And of course who can forget how he made grobby wobbler look stupid from just inside liverpools half at the Lane
RIP Cyrille Great player

I’m quite nostalgic for the days of monkey chants, shouting racist abuse at black players, throwing bananas, chanting “get your tits out....” , pissing against walls, eating “hot” pies with ice in the middle, mass violence, all white, male, working class crowds, crude obscene disgusting language, smell of tobacco.

What’s not to like ?

RIP Cyril Regis

and take care Deano

Chester I think when they bagged a hatrick each.

There was a pretty good documentary on the BBC I think a couple of years ago about racism in football back in the day, and how these players of his generation really took so much shit to pave the way for others. Hopefully it'll get repeated in tribute.

Edit: here it is, features Cyrille too

Just watched it, I thought it was going to be ultra-cringe, just the idea of blacks vs whites makes me feel quite uneasy. It was actually a decent watch.

It's interesting that for the white players it was just another friendly, testimonial game that didn't really leave a mark, while the black players were all well up for winning. That probably tells you more than anything.

Never quite got the hilarity of the likes of Jim Davidson and 'Chalky', either. Surprised he made it into a ripe old age to be honest and none of his targets caught up with him. Having met him personally (twice) I can vouch he is a monumental wanker.

But it was all okay though as Chalky White was his 'mate' and not just an excuse to do a crap Carribean accent. Seemed odd though as he doesn't strike you as someone who has a lot of black friends. Or indeed, someone who has any friends at all.

In other news, all the racial problems across the pond are fine now as Donald Trumpton explained:

"He has now told reporters: "I am not a racist. I'm the least racist person you have ever interviewed".

He is wholly racist. He mixes with, associates with, employs and references people who have deeply questionable motives and beliefs with regard racial and ethnic superiority, geared entirely toward the profiling of white, anglo saxons having primacy. That's racist.

And he is psychologically unstable and wholly unsuitable for office. The sooner the 25th Amendment is activated and that ridiculous buffoon is removed, the better.

I cannot recall racial abuse being directed by Blades fans at the Lane in the 1970's / 80's.

Great tribute Deano.
I remember watching the Blades play Manchester City in 1984. At the time City had a black goalkeeper called Alex Williams. He was well known in the game. Black footballers were still comparatively rare, black goalkeepers were virtually non-existent.

As he took his place in the goal in front of the Kop he was met with a barrage of bananas.

I can remember walking up the steps on the old kop in the 70s and 80s and looking at the opposition warming up, I scanned around to look for black players. This was because those guys put a shift in every game they played full pelt, 9 times out of 10 I was proved right. Regis was a great striker and o role model for all strikers to follow.
Great tribute by Deano who is a wonderful human being and has given us all memory’s to savour.

Which is ironic really, as the only indigenous people of the USA are native Americans.

Remember Clyde Best, West Ham late 60s, and Albert Johanneson, Leeds, early 60s great players. Both wingers I think.

Edit: wasn’t sure about the indigenous quote, so I checked, they themselves migrated to the north of America from Asia, but you get my point.

More glad than ever that Deano played for us and had the impact he did after seeing that interview.
He always seemed dead shy when a player but he's obviously someone who can now speak powerfully and eloquently and can lead and motivate given his managerial stint etc.
Proud of him.

Not according to those adherent to the edicts of the founding forefathers. I think they think that history will bleach away the wrongness of European colonialism and if you just keep saying stuff, all will be rectified.

Can't access it from where I am, but the Southpark-esque middle bit cartoon from Bowling for Columbine 'A Brief History of the United States of America' kinda sums the whole sorry shitfest up to a tee.
