(Shameless plug alert) You will be looking forward to the thread ‘60 Years Ago This Month’ for that and other highlights. I hope you will have other memories to contribute as the season progresses.
Also unique about this game and i believe it’s never happened since....United played in tangerine shirts

I'm certainly looking forward to it - one of my all time favourite Blade's watching experiences .

hmm, interesting thread so thanks for bumping.

there’s probably someone out there who could provide a statistical breakdown of goals and assists provided by the respective pairings. i was but a nipper at the time of deane and agana.

would anyone who watched them play be able to give their ‘modern equivalents’ to these players please? whom do they most resemble in their play? was deane an out-and-out target man? was agana the poacher? would be interested to see what you think. thanks in advance.

Deane was tall and great at scoring from headers....so the media always referred to him as a battering ram type target man.
However he wasn’t as tough as the media made out. More of a gentle giant at times and Bassett used to say he needs to use his physicality more.
Although he was tall he was quite skilful and nimble with his feet, brilliant at crosses when out on the wing.
It was a common saying at the time “Why can’t Deane be on the end of his own crosses”
My main memory of Deane was his stature and presence. You could sense the opposition defence were fearful just by him being on the pitch.

Agana wasn’t a natural scorer....his first instinct seemed to be to look for a pass than shoot.
However he was very quick...Deane was quick but Agana was slightly quicker.....both had a great attitude....humble team players who seemed to love the club.

Regards today’s players the nearest I can think is
Deane was like a younger , faster Troy Deeney...same physicality but wasn’t as naturally aggressive.
Agana was like a Dominic Calvert Lewin..but more of an instinct to set up his team mate instead of shooting.

wow, thanks for taking the time man. you really painted a vivid picture. much appreciated.

Nah, Brian Deane was both a goalscorer and a complete footballer, worlds apart from Deeney. We’d finish top four with peak Deano in this team.

I think the only time he got too 'physical' was when he got sent off in the first half away at Notts County one Boxing Day for thumping Nicky Law ( i think it was Law !!)

We still won the game 4-1 thou

I was acquainted to Deano's brother Tony through work & he said he was always trying to instil into him to be more aggressive on the field, & that if he had the same mentality as him he would have been twice as good as he was, but he was just too laid back to go to those lengths.

Played for Harrogate Town didn't he, Tony?

In this type of debate, the players involved normally have to have played over a good period of time. As established pairings in my lifetime I would go for Jones and Birchenall, Deane and Agana, Pace and Russell, in that order. Outstanding individuals such as Edwards and Sharp don’t in my mind have a striking partner whose name is automatically associated with them.
Spot on........ no debate needed!

I would go with Deane and Agana for the number of goals scored between them. I think Deano got 30 goals and Agana 28 in one season.I am sure Silent Blade of Bert will correct me if I am wrong.

Deanno, Agana, Edwards, Jonesy,. Non given us a successor.

#neverforgetneverforgive

Deane and Agana everyday of the week and twice on a sunday. Don't think I have ever seen a front 2 work in unison right from the start. Every defence they played against were in for a game and they knew that.
