hmm, interesting thread so thanks for bumping.
there’s probably someone out there who could provide a statistical breakdown of goals and assists provided by the respective pairings. i was but a nipper at the time of deane and agana.
would anyone who watched them play be able to give their ‘modern equivalents’ to these players please? whom do they most resemble in their play? was deane an out-and-out target man? was agana the poacher? would be interested to see what you think. thanks in advance.
Deane was tall and great at scoring from headers....so the media always referred to him as a battering ram type target man.
However he wasn’t as tough as the media made out. More of a gentle giant at times and Bassett used to say he needs to use his physicality more.
Although he was tall he was quite skilful and nimble with his feet, brilliant at crosses when out on the wing.
It was a common saying at the time “Why can’t Deane be on the end of his own crosses”
My main memory of Deane was his stature and presence. You could sense the opposition defence were fearful just by him being on the pitch.
Agana wasn’t a natural scorer....his first instinct seemed to be to look for a pass than shoot.
However he was very quick...Deane was quick but Agana was slightly quicker.....both had a great attitude....humble team players who seemed to love the club.
Regards today’s players the nearest I can think is
Deane was like a younger , faster Troy Deeney...same physicality but wasn’t as naturally aggressive.
Agana was like a Dominic Calvert Lewin..but more of an instinct to set up his team mate instead of shooting.
