i cannot believe the fuss that was made about him. I honestly don't see what he brings that coutts can't . £12k a week is what I hear and seriously he is not worth it.
Because of the wage and profile he will play every game and never come off .

I know there has been previous threads about him and some connected ones still knocking about .

But now he's played a good few games does anyone see that there is any more to come ?

What does he actually offer ?

How many goals a season would he get if he played every game ?

What metric is goals? He averages about 1 in 8 or 10. You think he was bought for his goals?? :rolleyes:

Today what I thought he brought:
  • from the outset he set the tempo - zipped a fast ball out to Bob, we've been crying out for that speed of pass all season - we kept it up most of the game - for all I care he can sit in a chair on the centre spot and watch the game if he's going to make us pass quicker
  • played a good ball into Adams(?) before Billy's shot that hit the post(?) - it was some good attack anyway - did this sort of thing a few times - it's just that this one's on the highlights
  • worked well with Coutts - they took it in turns moving forwards - moreso Hammond in the second half - didn't receive the ball but he was up there
  • broke up a dangerous attack with a fancy Premier League shove that somehow the ref didn't give as a foul
  • we hit the post three times in the second half and the keeper saved from Billy from about eight yards out - all of this despite or because of Hammond?
He still looks off the pace - which is why the classy shove was needed, and he missed a tackle when they broke second half but he was back there slowing things up and from being 5 v 2 down we were suddenly overwhelming them - but we still missed tackles and they got a good shot off. This time though it didn't fly in. Is our luck turning?

Speaking of Coutts: As posted elsewhere can we dust off the Coutts is a slow and useless crock threads from the end of last season - and just apply them to Hammond because, for me, they look increasingly daft.

Interesting how we all see things differently. Today I thought Hammond totally dominated midfield in the second half as Coutts sat back to allow him to play further forward . He picked up the second ball time after time and recycled it and I think he was instrumental in our 2nd half domination of the game.

I've been really worried about his performances since he arrived but he finally looks to be finding his match fitness on today's display. A few rang RS to slag him off earlier and I'm not surprised to have this thread but I totally disagree with the OP.
 
Leonard (no 18) for Southend is everything a centre midfield player should be.

He actually played football and made things happen - took his goal exceptionally well.

These players are about in the lower leagues and I bet he earns a lot less that the 12K we are apparently paying Hammond.

Liked the Southend left back too.

That's one of the reasons why i love football and can chat to anyone about it for hours, two people can watch the same game and come away with completely difference perspectives on what they watched.

For the record, i saw very little from Hammon again today and i still don't see what he brings to the team which could not be brought by numerous midfielders already at the club. I haven't drawn my conclusions on him yet, but i do feel that loan players should add an impact in the short term rather then take months to get match fit before showing us what they can do.

That's kind of why I posted it to see if there are people who are seeing positives in his play? You clearly are and perhaps it's coming .
To answer a question from WHF .. What metric is goals ??
In my opinion if you've got 2 CM "s in a team who can't get approx 7 or 8 goals in a season one of them is wasted . Just my opinion . I know we haven't had one for a while but it doesn't or shouldn't stop us wanting one
 
For me Adkins get's uncomfortably touchy when the Dean Hammond subject comes up, looks like he can't accept that his old mate is past it now.

If this isn't imaginary touchiness then maybe it's that despite his seemingly limitless patience and positivity he's eventually getting fed up of having to answer daft questions.

Adkins gets all nervy when he's asked about his signings.

Probably because he's realising they're all utterly terrible, much like his managerial performance.

Proper backhander job going on I reckon. Adkins gets Hammond in on crazy wages and pockets a slice of the pie for himself.
 
Now I've calmed down a bit, the 2nd half was vastly superior to the 1st
Hammond will divide opinions like monty and Doyle
the ultimate problem for me is that we have got too many players performing at 4-5 out of 10,and those that do have a better game,don't seem to do it for 90 mins

Do you mean relegation results? Our form is great :eek:.

Well...it was second half - and I thought for most of the first half as well. But I said at the time We have to convert this into goals otherwise...and there we go.

What I didn't expect was a second. Though credit to them they'd targeted Freeman aerially and it paid off.

It's been a constant theme since pre-season: we are not converting our chances. Today we hit the post three times. Bad luck? Again? Remember when Billy squandered three golden chances? Bury? Millwall: We're dominating the game. But we don't score.

I'm not saying we need a striker - but I'm not sure what I am saying if we're not finishing the chances we're creating.

Bergen Blade (too) often does a great-but-ugly post mortem pointing out our collective defensive failings.

So all in all our inability to...Stick it in one end and keep it out the other.

Don't see that Hammond and Coutts are any more or less culpable than anyone else.

I thought today was our best performance of the season. With two huge goal-sized exceptions. Next week will be the big test though.

It isn't really about how he compares to our current shite - I've said many times they aren't good enough.

My point here is that we want Adkins to mop up the mess Clough made. Hammond will no doubt be extremely expensive, and right now looks nothing like good enough to push us on. That's why there would, and should be an outcry if we sign him on current form.

Simply a bad signing for us, he brings nothing different to what we already have with Basham, Coutts and Wallace. Sooner we stop his loan the better.
 
Can't really see how Hammond is getting the stick for today.

First half we were slightly on top in midfield but then gave away a cheap goal (don't know who to blame for terrible marking) and got caught by a good goal.

Second half we totally dominated possession and goal scoring opportunities but didn't take them, got to blame the forwards for that.

How is he different to Wallace
He has played the last 5 games in a row

How is he different to Coutts?
More mobile

How is he different to Basham ?
Better distribution, moved the ball quicker today than Basham has all season

I think a few might be eating humble pie regards Hammond from what I've seen today
 
He was marginally less shit in the second half than he was in the first. The much maligned Coutts outshone him (as did James Wallace during his impressive cameo) without in any way being outstanding. Really can't see what Hammond brings to the table.

Even so, he's here, Nige has complete faith in him, & he'll be playing week-in-week-out, so better get used to him. Can only hope that he goes on to form the latest part of that long line of initially shit players who somehow proceed to win us round (most recently Chris Basham, of course). Can't see how if I'm honest, but hope springs eternal.

Fairy Nuff. For the outlay we should be getting a much better player than he appears to be at the moment.

Time will tell but I thought today was our most, er, coherent performance, and I think he was a big part of that. If we play the way we did second half in particular I think we'll put together a good run. Let's see,
 
Here's my two pennorth..

I watched him quite closely all the game till I got bored with him, he passed sideways and backwards all game in the first half, avoiding the ball deliberately at every occasion, at one point long wanted to feed the ball out to him and he just kept going to the centre circle turning his back on long, he was fucking wank in the first half, the second half, after a right bollocking at half time he stepped up a bit, still nowhere near what we all wanted from an accomplished midfielder, who Adkins has absolute faith in, at the minute, he won't tackle, won't pass forward, and won't boss the players around him, he's no better than what we have and had Wallace not been a crock, we wouldn't need him, if he doesn't up his game,me won't need him, but I do trust Nigel Adkins.....

Great second half, billly played out of position and so was jcr, and a point gained from 2/0 down....muddling through and a few green shoots popping up..

On the whole, we wouldn't miss him if he went back tonight...

Not impressed in the way I was when Brayford dropped down to help us, and that's the measure we need to apply....

It was a reasonable question about whether Hammond was fully fit though.
 
He was better today (low bar so far, granted) but he still seems off the pace. He seems to be one second late for things (like tackles), which you could put down to rustiness but he should be match fit by now. He's played enough.
 
I've seen Hammond a good few times now and he looks well off the pace and gives the ball away frequently. I've seen him do only a few meaty challenges over a number of games - I thought he was supposed to be doing this sort of thing all the time - not once a game.

He may still get better once he settes in - but so far, pretty poor. I agree with the poster who says Adkins will defend him no matter what as he is Adkins big loan signing and presumably his mate from previous clubs.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with most about Hammond BUT let me just play devil's advocate for a minute.

We brought him in as a holding midfielder to protect the defence (I think) so are we missing him doing that ugly job and getting too hung up on his lack of creativity? The only thing that has made me raise this is that comments about him on this forum and in the stands just about mirror those made in previous years about Doyle and, IMHO, we've missed him more than we could ever have imagined. So, do we actually need a player like this and learn to accept what they do, and don't, bring at the level we're at?
