How do we convince players to sign when it's obvious the manager is going to be sacked very soon? Going to be extremely difficult to beat other clubs to signatures when they don't know who the new boss will be.
Intangibles?

I've always felt that unless a player is a real managers favourite or the manager is a genuine icon that most players don't care too much who they play under.

Let's be honest they all say the same thing when they sign for a club... "great fans, big club, blah blah blah".

However, our current position will have an effect on the likelihood of players with aspirations of getting to the PL through the door.

Fingers crossed they've already sacked him and the new manager gets to at least approve signings today and tomorrow 🤞 The likes of Dyche and Cooper will at least pull in a decent loan player to fill our final spot in 24hrs

Sorry I think you are dreaming a little there nothing happens that quickly Selles is still in situ the owners are in America probably don't even know we lost again
so I feel that by the time they decide to remove Sellees (if they do)it will be too late as the window will have all ready closed

I wonder if we already have been doing it, especially in regards to some of our more recent signings and targets.

Selles has already admitted that he doesn't really get too involved with transfers until they are almost done, or if he wants a specific player.

Barry and Bindon were undoubtedly his choices, as he has had them at previous clubs.

I'm not sure where Chong and Matos fit into this, in regards to whose signings they are, Selles personally or the recruitment teams choices.

Mike Allen (head of recruitment) and Jamie Hoyland are still at the club, both of whom were appointed by Wilder when the Prince was still the owner, and quite a few of their targets were linked when we had Wilder.

Players like Ben Godfrey, Danny Ings, Tanganga, Ben Mee and Nathan Redmond (even though we aren't signing Redmond).

They don't strike me as Selles signings, it feels more like Mike Allen and Jamie Hoyland have pushed the boat out to sign them, knowing that Selles won't say no to them and that when/if we change the manager, they'll be players that he can use.

Gary Cahill. Hardly mentioned as one of our best loan players but he was on a different level.

Agree…you could instantly see was far above Championship level and destined for great things.
However I remember when Cahill joined us….he said the only reason was because of his hero Brian Robson.
Robson is one of the greatest players England has produced, a box to box midfielder who had everything, brilliant at tackling and defending
But also used to come up with plenty of goals…..no wonder his nickname was Captain Marvel.

You mean they don't come on this forum?!?! That's surely the best way of knowing what's going on with Sheffield United in a finger on the pulse kinda way.

It’s pretty sad really. Selles maybe thought these guys knew who to play football with being nearly promoted.
In reality the team was trained to pass sideways and backwards. There was not much technique and composure attributes in much of the team.
In ways it seems it was doomed to fail.

New players coming in seem to show a shift towards a better set of skillful players.
In time it could come good. Will he get time, very doubtful.

The need for many now is to get back to dinasour football and the love of wasting vast amounts of money on British donkeys.

We're still in August and the chances of automatics are pretty much gone, any player who were seeing us as a chance to play in the Premier league will have changed their mind

In many respects Selles reminds me of Bryan Robson. The team he has available is so much better than the results produced and we are massively underachieving.

Its like Bryan Robson all over again and we had some top championship players then such as James Beattie and the lad from Villa (from Dronfield i think) on loan who was a centre half who ended up playing at Chelsea for years. He couldn't get a tune out of the team.as he was hopeless. Selles is the modern day Bryan Robson. Just like then, we could appoint any ordinary joe as next manager and we would look a different team (Blackwell took over from Robson and we suddenly became unstoppable and just missed out on the playoffs). We need to ensure we actually quickly though and don't let the season drift.

It so disheartening. Players might be inclined to sign if they know a decent managerial appointment is imminent.
It was obvious quite early on in Robson's tenure (though not as obvious as things under Selles) that he needed replacing but there were many who thought he deserved longer. Thankfully he was replaced and had this been done a bit earlier we might have reached the play offs.
Going further back to Harry Haslam it was again obvious that we had big problems.
Radio Hallam had a Friday night phone in hosted by Stuart Linnell. Week after week fans phoned in wanting Haslam out and week after week Linnell condescendingly told them they didn't know what they were talking about and Haslam would eventually turn things around. With the help of Martin Peters he took us to division 4.
Incidentally we won our first 3 and 4 of our first 5 matches that season and still were relegated.

The last 4 in didn’t seem to have a problem. I doubt there are more than two more to come in and they will have already decided to come given that they only have a few hours to choose.

Players still available after the window is closed 👍

Remember us beating Swindon Town (with Chris Kamara in their team) 3-0 at Bramall Lane on a sunny day in September that fateful season to go top of the league, playing well, and looking good for promotion. Was also on MotD cameras. Martin Peters scored a late header at the Lane end from a corner kick. Little did we know what United had in store for us, and were actually putting on their size 9 boots to kick us all in the bollocks. From serious promotion candidates to relegation on the last day 8 months later. Classic United.
