Just clocked the table and note we ,whilst having scored 40 in 22 have let in 23. That compares with Bradfords 18 and an incredibly misely 12 by Bolton.
Now obviously if we score one more than the opposition every game it counts for nothing, but, and I'm sure Chrissywissysnugglepumpkinjimjamsmugofcocoawoollyjumper Wilder is all over this, but thought it worthy of pointing out as an area we really need to address.

We can certainly sort that out by switching from the risky 3 - 5 - 2 to something more sensibly defensive such as 4 -5 - 1 :(

I was rather thinking looking at whether we could improve the quality we currently field in the back 3 ?
Freeman isn't very good defensively, but good going forward and I'm not Laffertys biggest fan. As pointed out,Basham is a jack of all and master of none.
Just throwing it out there.
Clough Snr always built from the back and he wasn't too shabby. Don't think there's that much wrong but we certainly need to tighten up if we want a top 2 finish.

Prehaps you should reappraise that statistic, and break it up a little.

During the first 4 games we scored twice and conceded seven and was 24th,
During last 18 matches, we have scored 38 and conceded a miserly 16 and have risen from 24th to 2nd.

So where abouts in defence do we need to address?

Come Jan 1st I predict
Bolton 52 pts
Blades 50 pts
Scunny 48 pts
Bolton unlikely to slip up against bottom 2, Scunny have tricky 3 games and 2 at home for us that I expect us to win.

Our defence is far from being a car crash, but we have missed Jake Wright for the last few games. He just seems to calm shit down, if you know what I mean.

I also (still) highly resent the 5 goals we conceded against Millwall and Southend which I remain convinced with would not have conceded had he been in the team earlier.

The only concern with Jake I suppose is going to be keeping him fit. I can forsee him being in and out so we definitely need to think ahead and purchase another leader in defence.

In the last 3 league games without Jake Wright we have conceded 2 goals.

True, but I still think they look a bit shaky, less decisive, more accident prone and not as organised. Personally I just feel more confident when he is in the team. EEL certainly looks a better player with Wright alongside him. His presence might also have helped in the cup game.

If we can continue scoring at our current rate or better then we'll be OK with what we have in defence. Since Wright came into the team we've conceded 16 in 18, that's not bad. That equates to less than 50 all season and if we maintain our scoring rate we'll score 80+, giving us a very healthy goal difference of +30 or better.

Wright needs to be in the middle of the defence in games where we'll have more defending to do. I'm not confident in last night's back three when under real pressure. EEL is far less effective in the middle, and Basham sometimes gets caught out, although he often tackles superbly. We look more shaky and error prone.

If we manage to improve either the defence or the attack we should be promoted. If we can improve both that would be a real bonus. Interesting transfer window coming up.

Against Coventry we didn't get our passing game going very well. It seemed that the poor state of the pitch was a big problem. ( I don't know if this was discussed on the sky commentary because I couldn't hear it). I agree with the stuff above about looking better when Wright is in the team. But heavier pitches might be a bigger challenge. Can Coutts play in mud? Are we strong enough physically?

We play all out attacking, so we're going to concede a lot. I'm happy with it, rather this than sit back and go for 1-0 every game.

Agree with that. Very little between us and Bolton at the minute and their chairman has already said they won't sign anybody in January. If we invest well the league is ours for the taking.

Just imagine if Mr Long was behind that defence!!!!!!!!!!

Just got abit of sick in my mouth!!!!!
