Dave Bassett. 'Who was the best player you ever worked with'.

No, but I wasn't surprised when I saw who it was. Bassett did not always work with the most cultured players, and of the early 90's crop at the lane, Hodges surely must stand out as one of the more 'cultured'?

It doesn't surprise me that its Hodges....
My favourite skilful player at a time when we had nearly a team of Heroes under Bassett....

I might of loved Deano and Agana more but Hodges could do something that would leave you open mouthed or amazed..

Class act at times!!

I remember Bassett saying in his book that it was criminal that Hodges didnt have more honours from the game than he did considering the talent he had.

Anyone remember the "friendly" with a Italian club when Hodges was dismissed? I think along with three other players and Bassett.

I dont think it was strictly a friendly, I think it was some sort of half arsed tournament called the Anglo Italian Cup. Notts County were in it too.

Think it was against Ancona in 94.

BL lower tier for the first and last time, good giggle as no-one was really bothered about the score.

My favourite player too

Could be frustrating, though. Half the time he didn't look as though he could be bothered. At other times he could give away silly, niggly fouls.

Then he would come up with a stroke of genius.

I once interviewed him for some Programme notes, and found him to be intelligent and amusing - and remarkably candid about his laid-back style. "That's just the way I am" he said (or words to that effect).

I recall that we had a foreign ref - who seemed to think that football was a non-contact sport. The Bassett style of play didn't go down at all well.

I was there for that game- Excited that Utd were in Europe(Allbeit Mickey Mouse Europe)
But by the end everyone was laughing and/or bewildered by what went on....
DB was going bananas till he got sent off-Happy Days

24/8/94. Blake, Hodges and Hartfield got sent off and Bassett was sent from the bench. A Udinse player was sent off as well. In the end we lost 1-2, Littlejohn getting our goal.

Didn't Harry get sent off for going onto the pitch to remonstrate with the latest in a catalogue of diving cheats and doing the "wanker" hand gesture at him as he was rolling about on the floor?

I remember looking forward to seeing some of the flags and flares that we saw on C4's italian football at BDTBL. In the end I think there were 2 away fans. Probably Sheffield lads n all :(

I vaguely recall Bassett denying he had done what he was accused of the following night on Calendar, until they presented him with video evidence...

That was also my only game ever on the Bramall Lane lower tier.

Pure class from Harry that. Would have been worth the entrance money on it's own.

I remember we had a cast-iron, stonewall penalty turned down that game. One of our lads cut in from the right and was chopped down a good two yards into the area, but the ref gave a freekick. I also remember our fans chanting "We want four!" after our third red card. I was only about five at the time, I thought they were chanting "We want Flo!", who was on the bench.

Hodges must be the most talented player I've seen for United. I recall someone said of him that if he'd have played 15 years earlier, he'd have been a star and if he'd played 15 years later he would never have made it as a professional.
