Uh oh "'Harry did well because of his size but he has always been good technically,' said Morgan. 'He always strode out of defence, into midfield and has a good range of passing. He's a modern-day defender but still does the muck-and-nettles stuff, making blocks and winning headers."

Guess who'll be along shortly...;)

Spot on, they're crying out for someone like Maguire. But nope, he'd rather spent twice as much on Shkodran Mustaphi :-S

I have a close mate who's a Gooner and he says you can sum Wengers latter years up by the fact one Summer he had a choice of two CBs - Cahill and Mertesacker. He chose the latter and the decline continued...

Considering his most successful years had an English dominant back 5, you'd have thought this might have helped him.

You could argue Graham and Rioch made Wenger, Wenger just happened to add an element of flair, but without the defence, you win nothing.

I wonder if people like Harry (and Kyle and John Stones) getting more press will bring in a defensive renaissance.

There are some absolutely shocking defenders earning a living in the premier league. It'd be nice if they got found out and you had to be good at your job to get paid £40K a week.

Arsenal are the worst offenders, I hope their new boss sorts them out. Bellerin is great with the ball but is nesh, and Mustafi must be one of the worst defenders in the top 3 leagues. Absolutely shocking.

Blows my mind when teams don't pay attention to their back line and goalkeeper. You can't outscore everyone. If Liverpool had spent some money in the last 5 or 6 years on defending they might have a couple of league titles and a champions league.

....apart from a slew of FA Cups

Just keep developing Yorkshiremen as defenders because we don’t like to give owt away.

"If Arsene knew anything about defenders he'd still be at Arsenal"

For the past 3 Summer transfer windows, I've been of the view that Wenger should buy Maguire. He was exactly what Arsenal needed but they have faffed around with a succession of flaky foreign defenders. As Reid says, Wenger would still be in a job if he knew anything about defenders.

This Summer, if Klopp has any sense, he can make Liverpool serious title contenders next season. Alternatively, Maguire may slot perfectly into Man City's side and they'll be unbeatable.

A world cup winner or a bloke who was rinsed by Icelandic attackers in his last major tournament?

I like Cahill, but your mate doesn't sound that convincing. They've lacked centre halves for years.

Washed up World Cup Winner or bloke who's ended up with multiple Premier League Winners Medals!!
