Teams have always done it. Only this season, the defenders are allowed to come into the box.

As someone who’s played in goal (albeit not to a high level) but in the little specialised goalkeeping stuff I’ve done, it’s astonishing how he’s made it so far with that style. He’s constantly bouncing up and down and swinging his arms around in the air.

It’s why he’s constantly letting the ball go through him from distance as he never actually sets himself to make a save. He makes the odd worldy but a lot of the time that’s because he’s recovering from poor positioning.

His defence never look to have confidence in him and his distribution isn’t all that either.

Goes back to the days of that boring twohat Don Howe. His take was pass it out to your own player you have the ball 100%. Kick it out you only have a 50% chance of winning the ball and he needed a flip chart to demonstrate this . See boring 2hat.

It's the daftest tactic imaginable and has gifted the opposition loads of goals this season. A very tiny percentage of goalkicks taken like this ever get to the halfway line before the team loses possession, compared to 99.9% of traditional goalkicks easily passing the halfway line. The best tactic by far is the big boot requiring opposition defenders to stare into the sky as they back-peddle trying to judge at what point they need to get their heads in gear, as your midfielders line-up ready to pick up the 2nd ball.....

It is really. Modern supporters want to see ‘good football’ and their idea of that is retaining possession. You can’t retain possession by constantly hitting it long towards a target man. So you play out from the back instead. There are risks in this but there are also rewards. The risks become greater as you go further down the league, because the best defenders can beat a press and play out from the back, lesser defenders make more mistakes.
So a lot of managers just don’t take the risk. Managers like Allardyce, Pulis and, to an extent, Dyche. Even CW has adopted a safety first approach, which has immediately led to comments about how we don’t play good football anymore (and also why we don’t concede many cheap goals).

one of the worst pieces of goal keeping i've seen cost us a World Cup finals position.

it was when England played Poland in the 70's (TC played in midfield) and Shilton was the GK that night. We simply had to win !

When you get a few minutes go and watch Shilts in the lead up to the shot where Poland scores - Shilts was was "bouncing" and just as the lad shot, Shilts is at the top of his bounce - and unable to get down quick enough - ball scoots under him. Ended up 1-1 and we absolutely battered them but the "clown" as Clough called him in the polish goal had a blinder.

My lad has played at a decent standard and he always talks about "getting yourself set" - and what he means by that is planting your feet ready to go which ever way is needed.

As for Pickford - he is nothing but average - always has been, but then so was Hart. At this moment in time, Pope seems slightly ahead of Hendo in the pecking order, but both are better than Pickford.
