£45m divided by 8 is £5.625m per player averaged out, which is probably the pond in which we are fishing. That buys you something in a band that encompasses the top tier of the middle level of championship players and the bottom tier of the top level.

If our rumoured strategy of listing the top 5 players in every position in the championship is true, it would match up with this. We’d try and find 6 undervalued performers and 2 jewels. 6 Egan’s, a Maupay & a McBurnie. :)

Hurray, we don't need 12 players or a £70m budget after all. (Though it would be nice :))

I know we can only have 2 loans from premier league sides, but can we loan any more from championship sides. Looking at teams like stoke, west br Fulham etc who might want some good players off the wage bill

I don't think so.

You can’t just fill the squad with anyone. We have to have 3 members of the 25 that were trained with the club since 16 or came through the academy. I think Eastwood and sharp are about it, so probably someone like slater has a late squad filler unless we bring someone back who was previously trainees by the club.

No danger, Harry MaGuire, Kyle Walker, Kyle Naughton and Jags are coming back.

I think the rule is only two from a team under english fa juristiction, and a maximum of 4 in a season. As an example, Newcastle currently have Kennedy from chelsea, Rondon from WBA and Barreca from Monaco. Cardiff have Arter from Bournemouth, Niasse from Everton and Camarassa from Real Betis.

I've seen a lot of people saying about 'we won't sign 10 players' etc. but that's exactly what we did last year - 12 in fact.

9 in the summer:
Egan
Washington
Henderson
McGoldrick
Bryan
Norwood
Woodburn
Johnson
Cranie

3 in January:
Dowell
Madine
Hogan

Yes and for about £6.5M (fees only)

The OP I believe would be the basis of our recruitment. Things however do change. If a RWB becomes available I think we should maybe dip into market to compete with Baldock.

But whatever the gaffer choose I’m right behind it

Can't disagree much with OP's reasoning although I think Bryan won't be in the squad and Wilder has always had 5 strikers in the squad, so I think he'll sign 3 up front. ( Although 1 may be someone like McGoldrick, capable of dropping into the AM role.

It looks to me that we're going to stick for now in a few positions Egan/Stearman, Baldock/Freeman & Fleck/Lundstram because our budget will only stretch so far and the numbers already required.

Although Wilder says he's looking to recruit young hungry players I take this with a pinch of salt. I expect us to sign about 5 players in the £5 -10 million category, and about the same number of the premier league equivalents of Leon & Crainie, for next to nowt.

That all sounds about right.

I agree aswell that he could end up signing 3 strikers. As you say, if one can also play deeper - great.

I don't see why 25 players is necessary.

There are less games and there's less Saturday - Tuesday.

We have an excellent record keeping players fit.

If we insist on taking the squad to 25 it will mean stretching the budget further and compromising on quality.

A squad of 22/23 is about right.
We are left with 16 players after the rest have gone meaning we will probably bring in 5 or 6 loans and transfers leaving us with 22 .possibly 3 youngsters moving up to be part of the 25,so really filling our allowed 25 shouldn't be a problem,it's the quality of those 5 or six new players who will possibly define our season.
I await with interest who they will be.The core of the squad is the backbone which has been built over 3 years.

sheffielder do you have a link to those rules, because that is not my understanding.

Just a thought on Kean Bryan, he is only 22 which is young for a CB. He could go out on loan or maybe Wilder has seen enough of him to know that he's heading in the right direction to be around the squad. He could be 3rd choice behind Stevens and O'Connell, quietly learning his trade from the more experienced first team which would be of real benefit to his future.

Guess I just think it's a bit harsh to write a 22 year old CB off on a couple of stand in performances when the whole team was stretched.

From wikipedia - it's 8 players who were with an English club for at least 3 years before the age of 21

Homegrown Player Rule (England)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Homegrown Player Rule is an initiative of the English Premier League to allow for more domestic players to be a developed from an earlier age in the hope of nurturing more homegrown talent. It forms part of the League's Elite Player Performance Plan. The Premier League proposed a maximum of 17 non-"homegrown" players in each club squad, and the squad size is a maximum of 25. This means that in a full squad of 25 players, there must be at least eight homegrown players.[1][2] Greg Dyke, the former chairman of the Football Association (FA), wanted to implement much stronger regulation of foreign players. His intention is to help England to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as he stated in an op-ed piece.[3]

Some of the most significant of Dyke’s 2015 proposals included:

  • Homegrown players in a top-flight 25-man squad be increased from eight to 12 [1] two of whom must be brought up in the team's youth system
  • Tightening the definition of what it is to be a homegrown player as a consequence fewer foreign-born players would qualify
Dyke was replaced by Greg Clarke in 2016.

Foreign-born, home-grown[edit]
Currently, to be classified as homegrown one must be on an English team for at least three years before the age of twenty-one[4] which Dyke would like to reduce to eighteen. This would mean that a teenager would have to start at the club by the age of fifteen at the latest and, since players are not allowed to move across national boundaries before sixteen (except under exceptional circumstances),[5] this would mean that very few foreign players could qualify as homegrown.

Each season the Premier League lists the squads for each of its clubs for the season on 1 September (after the summer transfer window[6] closes). Each club is able to list up to 17 senior players that are not English or Welsh and did not spend a significant period in an English or Welsh academy, plus any number of homegrown players up to a maximum squad size of 25, plus an unlimited number of academy and under-21 players. The list for 2017[2] contains a number of homegrown players who are not English or Welsh born or qualified, including Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas (110 caps for Spain)[7] and Victor Moses (Nigeria)[8], Manchester United's Paul Pogba (France)[9] and Romelu Lukaku (Belgium national team record goalscorer)[10], and Arsenal's Spanish international Hector Bellerin[11].

And neither are likely to be available if Leeds win the play-offs, of course.

Think Ayling might well be available if Leeds go up - surely he'd be one they'd need to replace.

I'm not sure we'd get Phillips even if Leeds don't go up. Think they see him as one of their crown jewels.

Luke Ayling can do RWB or RCB

Kalvin Phillips can do CDM or CB

That's two i'd be looking at.

Then of the relegated clubs are any of these achievable?

Huds
Mooy - CM or CAM
Pritchard - CM or CAM
Williams - CM
Depoitre - ST (Target man)

Fulham
Are any of theirs realistic? Maybe not as they didn't need any money before and noww with parachute payments...

Cardiff
Etheridge - GK
Reid - CAM or ST
Zohore - ST (Pacy)
Mendez-Laing - Wing, CAM or ST (pacy)
Gunnarsson - CDM

Will Newcastle listen to offers for Dwight Gayle?

All those above offer at least competition in those positions
I've really liked Ayling in the games I've seen him play, would make a good addition I think.
I'm a bit surprised to see Freeman has been retained to be honest, not much between Freeman & Cranie for me

First team squad of 23/25 is essential.
Recent evidence suggests that Wilder was correct with recruitment. He learned from his first season in the Championship. With Billy injured and Madine banned he still managed to field a winning side.

Hopefully a few gems will arise from the Academy, with fewer league games, and primary target of survival, fringe players and youth will get their chance in the two cup competitions.

Wilder learns quickly and although the prem is a big step up, I trust his instincts and recruitment policy. Team comes first, no big shots.

Yeah, when I said compete, I meant displace.

Having said that, i haven't written him off.

I’ve learned that it would be unwise to write Wilder signings off. I’ll go with “he needs a pre season”. Didn’t work for Ched but I live in hope (well actually Doha but you get the point).

definitely yes to first part.

above £30m? - we are putting up smoke and mirrors at present then.

Competitive means quality where needed - which points to above £30m. Hope you are correct - we need to stay for at least Y2.

UTB

30 Mil gets you one Mitrovic -

Southampton will make a £30m move for Fulham's Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, 24. (Express)

Newly promoted Premier League side Sheffield United are interested in Middlesbrough's 26-year-old Congolese striker Britt Assombalonga. (Northern Echo)
