I was wondering if anyone on here went to this game. It had been rearranged from earlier in the season to a Tuesday night.
I was on a training course in central London for a week so took the opportunity to go.
It took me almost 2 hours and 2 buses to reach Selhurst Park and I arrived about 5 minutes before kick off. I saw someone wearing a red and white scarf so followed him in. He joined a group of Palace fans inside so was probably an Arsenal or some other London team fan, so I stood by myself behind the goal. The attendance was nearly 24000 and I could see a small group of Blades fans half way round on the side of the ground so couldn't join them.
I was lucky to see a brilliant display by the Blades who dominated the game from kick off. We won 1-0 courtesy of a second half Billy Dearden goal but the result flattered Palace who were only kept in the game by a brilliant goalkeeping display by John Jackson, 5-0 would have been a more accurate reflection of the game. I don't recall Palace creating a single chance such was our domination. Obviously self preservation prevented any exuberant outbursts from myself but I was delighted on the inside and enjoyed my 2 hour journey back to the hotel.
The team that night was McAlister, Badger, Hemsley, Flynn, Colquhoun, Eddy, Woodward, Salmons, Dearden, Currie and Bone.
I did meet a Blade a couple of years later on another training course in Leeds (I needed a lot of training) who had travelled to the match with the supporters club and he said just one coach with about 40 fans made the journey.
I feel very lucky to have been one of a small number of Blades fans attending this match.
It also shows how times have changed in terms of travelling support to away games.

Flynn didnt play, McKenzie did.

I went to this game. Travelled on a supporters club mini bus with 12 Blades on it. I think we were the only ones from Sheffield. Got onto the edge of London in late afternoon, but only just got to the ground in time due to heavy traffic on the south circular. No m25 in those days. As you say, a good performance and the win kept us away from the relegation fight. A palace fan threw a traffic cone at us on the way back to the bus. Got home about 2am. Can't remember any of my fellow travellers. happy days.

Thanks for that, nice to know my memory isn't too bad after all these years. I must have sub consciously erased any memories of the Palace attacks

Having been to that game and worked in Leeds for many years, a fair chance that it was me that you spoke to.

Unfortunately I saw a few years ago in the Star that he'd passed away ,his name was Andy and I took him to Leeds for the week in my car as he was on the same course. Being the summer of 1975 we were both full of optimism for the following season having just finished 6th.... we all know what happened next

You're quite right. I checked my Clarebrough and Kirkham 'Complete Record ' carefully before posting as well. Just checked again and see Flynn played the game before. Just paid £500 for some new varifocals as well, should have gone to Specsavers

Was the traffic cone red and white , hoops , narrow at the top and wider at the base - around 20 inches high ?

If so I think I was also on the same bus as you

(Was the Palace fan wearing a silk scarf tied to his wrist , flares and a snake belt? If so I deffo was on the same bus as you)
