It's been declining for years. Hard to put your finger on the exact reason, but things like demographics and a failure of the club to proactively house the vocal elements in an area would be two I'd consider. The issues on the wing of the Kop have just about finished it off. I know a few that have moved to the South as they see it as a dead end now. We get the odd decent atmosphere still I suppose. Even under Wilder, in truth it was tepid compared to the Warnock years.
Maybe it's just the way things are going. Clubs and the powers that be don't seem to want vocal fans.

Oh I’m sorry, should I have stayed to watch us run into more blind alleys and mis hit simple passes? Or am I allowed to go home to bed since I’m working at 5.30 in the morning? Is that allowed sir?
No. Don’t my go to the match and get tucked up nice and early. Some fan you are.

Nearly 2 separate fights on south stand with our own.

Were you anywhere near row nn seat 24ish?

A random middle aged bloke and his missus spent the first half proper kicking off at a lad sat in front because he had the temerity to stand up during the big moments. Just like every other bugger at football match does.

Folk around them eventually made it clear they needed to pipe down or fuck off, and they never came back after half time.

If they happen to read this and recognise themselves, please don’t come back ever again. And get therapy.

If you’re on about the one in H, I really wish that fat kid with the scarf would have got chinned. Very odd character. Always on his own. Was stood up a few rows behind us earlier this and was shouting some right shit at the players (I turned around giving him a faux menacing glance a few times) . Always seemingly walking about on his tod causing trouble.

If we were on this run under Wilder then the place would be rocking. Just a fact. Perhaps Hecky needs to get his hair cut in town and go for drinks with his pals in Broomhill.

But does PH know where the Bramall Lane back door is..?

Four and a half hours kip and I'm on the train to work. Job's a good un! UTB

How many loyalty points do you get for that? ;)

There was a fat kid on his own with a scarf wandering around the concourse on his own before kick off aggressively demanding cigs from people and behaving quite strangely. Wonder if it’s the same one.

That’s the one! Looks exactly as you’d imagine a Wednesday fan to look (a lot have a ‘look’).

Fans were good until we went 1-0 up and then it because really nervous. We then got behind the team @ 2-1 down until the 3rd goal. No good enough. We were 1-0 up and playing well & we just went silent like the team.

I agree. I think at that point getting to the premier league was like a dream come true though. My kids had been going since they were 8 years old and saw games against Yeovil, Fleetwood and Wycombe as completely normal: the idea we might be about to play against players who they only ever saw on FIFA was unimaginable.

The players had never been there.

The manager had never been there.

A whole generation of fans had never been there.

Now though, we’ve done it once. And that second season was one long nightmare. Everyone wants promotion, but the fervour of a few years ago just isn’t there from what I’ve seen.
We need to get promoted or we're fucked financially and the team will quite possibly be rubbish for years. Apathy about a previously poor season is a pretty damn stupid reason/excuse at this point.

The atmosphere was absolutely embarrassing. Middleborough fans were taunting us for about 75 minutes.

Fans that can't be fucked to provide vocal support, which EVERYONE knows helps... Really need to have a think in my opinion. What home advantage did we get last night? Probably none, and if anything the fans silence helped inspire the away team.

Are we the only set of fans that don't admire cauldrons of atmosphere, or fail to comprehend the concepts of home advantage/twelfth man/carrying the team etc?

A generalisation, but large parts of our fan base is only ever one defeat away from a good old wallow in self pity and is extremely neurotic. It is certainly not very emotionally robust.
The guy behind me on the kop, was on about how shit the players were pretty much as soon as they equalised

Everything that didn't come off was because we were shit. Reactionary and tiresome. It was a "new" voice, so hopefully it was a one off visit. There could be some nervy matches on the run in and he'll not make it any more entertaining.

Embarrassed by the losers leaving in the last few minutes.
I don’t think it’s just the football it will the thought of we playing shite and I don’t want to be sat stewing in traffic for ages.

Tbf their fans were silent at 1-0. Its only when they got in the game they started to get behind them.

Not any of them, around gangway F. Looks like there's a few bellends then.

I'll say one thing though. After full-time the players walked around John Street and the Kop to applaud the remaining fans. In the old days they would have been greeted by half applause and a smattering of boos. Last night the fans that were still in the Kop gave them a roar as if to say "COME ON LADS. KEEP GOING!" I thought it was quite moving.

Some will have decent reasons for leaving early, some won't, all could have stayed if they really wanted to.

Most just aren't that bothered, they come for light entertainment and leave the moment they get the urge to. How it makes the club look, and the message it sends to the players doesn't cross their minds.

Each to their own though.
An example from the Swansea game a few days ago. Two young blokes in their twenties, arrived at five past three, sat down by me, then by half three both disappeared down for..?.. a pint or something..?.. Missed Robinson's goal, came back up with a pre teen lad who appeared to be family, early in second half. Disappeared again before McBurnie's goal. Why bother?
The bloke at the other side of me with two young lads,
disappeared before the third goal too.
I don't do it as there's always a chance of late goals. The other issue is that the atmosphere is terrible, very quiet, anxious, there is very little singing or even encouragement, people are tending to stand and cheer a goal but sit absolutely silent all through the match otherwise.

It begs the question why go in first place ?

The fervour isn't there, and it's embarrassing that lots seem to have got a entitlement to expect us to do it, and currently, somebody to fund it.

What because I left 5 mins early on 1 occasion when we were playing badly and I had to be up unusually early (for myself)? Shall we ignore the 21 years of season ticket that I've had and not missed a minute of home football in that time? Also never boo as if you look at my post history, you'll see I'm not big on criticising the players... In the "dark days" I was often called a happy clapper...

Worth noting that most clubs seem to have problems and look to address them with ultras, singing areas, safe standing, instructions etc.

I blame phones. People used to go to a football game and the only focus was football.

I think people are entitled to leave whenever they wish. That is their choice and their right.
Personally, I have never ever left a match before the final whistle. So many goals and dramatic moments occur late in matches.
And I have also had to get up very early in the morning and had a 150 mile drive home or (some years ago admittedly) a ride back on the late night mail train. But that is my choice and does not make me right or those who choose to leave early wrong.
My dad always taught me the same thing. Maybe 90% of the time nothing happens, but in that 10% that it does, you can't beat it - Leeds 02/03 (Jags and Nuddy) springs immediately to mind.

Yes this was a good moment after the shocking display by so many amy 'fans' walking out on the team.

I'll always remember the streams of villa 'fans' walking out and missing this comeback.
I was there as a Blade, and obviously it was a sickener for us.
Look at empty seats as they manage to pull it back.

The fans are not wrong
They know what they are watching, and they know that a team that has gone through months of doing barely enough to beat Wigan, Blackpool and Wrexham isn't inspiring them

There is no excitement following United, it isn't allowed

And if things ever do reach a scale of 3 out of 10 Sheffield City Council and it's High vis jacket mafia will kill it stone dead with further fan restrictions and closed down seats
