We did. Appointed Chris Wilder and he took us up without a promotion budget and kept us up against all the odds.

It's difficult and requires incredible luck, we've had it recently.

Wilder 16-20 was ace - 6 years ago !
But let's live in the present.
We've had years of parachutes and end up getting schooled by a non-parachute club with good recruitment and a good manager - that's NOW - history is bunk.
Our levels of fitness are poor.
We couldn't live with their mf last night , especially in the first half.
Our owners need to get a grip of football and then sort their club out.
Or are we going to stick with the Bettis & Wilder axis forever ?

They were a good side but we also proved that they weren't infallible. They're a club who have been better organised than we've been with the squad and manager they appointed.

No doubt they'll need some additions when they go up but who doesn't? Conway scored a good goal but I'm not sure he'll be up to much in the Premier League, he's essentially a better version of Tom Cannon.

Based on everyone else we've played against though, they've been the best we've come up against and have a good manager who, unlike our own foreign experiment, has proven records of success.

He took Varnamo up, kept them up then 5th, no sooner does he leave, they finished 15th again then went down. Took Hammarby from 7th to 2nd behind Malmo in his first season only to be behind Mjallby with a record points tally in 2025

Hard to judge how good they were when you have no midfield cover. Arblaster shouldn't have started and Peck was in no mans land without an enforcer alongside him. They have the best midfield in the division and we started with those two. They always looked to progress the ball forward and had the easiest 45 minutes they will have all season. Time and again they passed through us and tactically we did nothing to counter it until the half time substitution.

Credit to their coaching staff. They exposed our weakness. Coopers kicking and our defensive left side as Bindon and Burrows were given a run around by Whittaker. Him being substituted handing the initiative back to us. Our midfield protection was non existent yet we still created chances that should have been taken. In terms of fitness, pace, progression of the ball forward and tactical nous they were a long way in front of us.

We kept the score respectable in the end when it looked like we were heading for a severe beating. For 20 minutes we had them worried but the sending off killed any momentum We looked more of a threat when we went to a 3 at the back following Rothwells departure.

Overall it was disappointing we did not test them further with a functioning midfield. Selection errors and tactics did not help our cause.

Measuring them against last seasons promoted sides Weeds, Burnley and Sunlan all were better imo. They will go up but need the same level of backing the Mackems got from their Board to survive.

With red and white glasses on I was justifying the "They weren't that good" statements in my head but from a more neutral view there's reasons because of that.

Boro 1st Goal:

Red and white- It's gone through two sets of legs on the way in
Neutral- They moved the ball quickly and flicked it round the corner in the build up

Boro 2nd goal:

Red and white- our player slips to allow the original shooter a bit more space. The ball flicks up nicely off the post to their lad- simple header
Neutral- Slip or not, if we're tighter/closer he could have made a block, if bindon reacts faster he could have maybe got to the header first

At the end of the day, if you move the ball quickly and look more alert you end up getting that rub of the green

I'm all for living in the present, the post I was replying to suggested we could never make an inspired managerial appointment, I was just pointing out that we did.

It's clearly difficult to, so that we've not managed a managerial miracle in a few seasons is hardly a reason to complain. Imagine being the Pigs FFS!

The very club you are fairly praising hired Wilder recently themselves, it's not like Boro and every other club are doing something we don't.

Barring the first 15 minutes the team were as much spectators as we were up in the stand. Boro absorbed our early flurry…Then went on to dominate.
It’s just a shame CW didn’t change our ineffectual midfield a tad sooner.

Change to whom? I don't think Philips had more than 30 mins in him. When he did change, is was because he saw what we all did, Blaster isn't ready. I suspect for CW, Rothwell came on too early. If he was fully fit, he'd have started. Were playing Blaster out of necessity, not desire.

Yes, but you could see immediately what the team was missing when Phillips came on. I love Sydie and Blaster to bits but they were both trying to play the same role out there.

Bang on, its hard to see beyond the perilous lottery of massive risk taken by the likes of Forest. In all honesty, Burnley have been sensible but we know only too well what it feels like to be like them in the PL…..

They are competitive which is more than we were on our last brief trip to premiership.

They have an academy one for years now and a chairman who supports the club . They had a struggle with over spending trying to get back to the premiership.Hes learnt his lesson and supports the club more carefully.
Great to have an owner who supports the club,we had a born and bred sheffielder who just kept the club going with no real investment in the team.
What path will our owners take.

It’s weird football intit.
They sign and up and coming Swedish manager who has them playing well.
Even old Franky Lampard drove Coventry to the heights. Will they have enough, I don’t know.

We signed Selles who turns out to be garbage.

We have Wilder though. It always brings a smile when we sign the great UK cast offs with the hope 1 or 2 stick.

Totally agree.
They were a cut above us and it's heartening to see a club without parachute payments assembling such a fit team playing such slick football.
So what if they might come down ?
If we went up , we'd certainly come straight down , especially with the limited Wilder in charge.
But we need the parachutes.
We've had em and wasted em.
I dunno the Boro manager but he's doing a good job without parachutes.
We'll need to do a similar job next season if we are to be any good.
But our loans will leave and we'll probably sell our talent to balance the books , so some kind of managerial miracle will be required.
That'll be when we see if CoH have learned anything about football.

For all the over hype around how good Boro were, after half time & a well overdue tactical change I think they had only the one chance in the second half ??
Morris had no one near him for 45 minutes & the time and space we afforded him before the change was embarrassing but let’s be right that was down to poor decision from the manager last night .
As I said previously they are a decent side in a poor Championship & but I think all three promoted sides last season were better .
Seem to remember Burnley under Kompany had all the the same accolades only to come straight back down

Best side to come to the Lane this season for me.

I could pick holes from our perspective but sometimes you have to give credit to the opposition.

First 15 was end to end but they created clear cut chances they should have taken whilst we didn't.

Fair play, we hung in second half and put them on the back foot even with 10 men.

Needless OTT challenge from Rothwell in that part of the pitch. I dont need to see it back on a screen to know it was a red all day from my seat in the SS.

Not sure what the best approach is for Oli A to help him get back to his best.

They were good but saying we didn't create clear cut chances is just rubbish. Bamford, Hamer and Peck all had great chances in the first half.

We ( The supporters) knew before kick off what was coming, so the question is....why did Wilder set us up like he did?
I said before the game kicked off that with the line up that rabbit had to play deeper more in midfield than his usual role, but no,we had bigger holes in our midfield than Sportbilly /Detroit Blade saw when he stood and watched his hairy arsed Father pump away at his Mother all those years ago.
So for me it's on Wilders ignorance/ arrogance and his limitations.

i dont think your giving boro enough credit yes it is a poor championship this season but i thought they played some fantastic football last night far and away the best team to come to the lane this season having said all that i thought it was a very good performance from us with a bit more luck we could have got something out of that game

I’m not against Sydie and Blaster in the same line up per se…But they’ve got to try and adopt different roles in the middle of the park. One has to got sit in deeper than the other, as currently they are very flat and quiet easy to penetrate or simply play around.
