He somehow bore some of the brunt of the criticism from some for the Villa game when he wasn’t responsible for any of the goals – Wilder described as daft to bring him on, “unsettling the defence” and other such rubbish.
He was as professional and reliable a player as you could have wished for last season. Like Stearman, wasn’t involved for huge amounts of the season and then always delivered when called upon. He fit our system like a glove, which isn’t necessarily easy to do, and had a huge part in our promotion.
His West Brom assist was fantastic, and probably gets the biggest attention. I would single out three other games in particular where he was fantastic. Firstly, Middlesbrough at home when we had him and Stevens either side of Egan, right off the back of the Villa collapse. The manner of the clean sheet set the tone for the defensive excellence in the remaining games. Secondly, his appearance off the bench in the Brentford game where he settled a defence under pressure following Madine’s sending off. And lastly, and perhaps lost amidst the Basham contribution, his superb performance at Elland Road. That first 20 mins or so we were under the cosh, and Cranie made several excellent pieces of defending to keep us in the game.
He carried his form in the final third of the season into the promotion celebrations, where he was again spectacular value.
Good luck well and truly to the lad.
