Thinking about clubs like us and clubs like Fulham, with obviously different transfer strategies, I wonder how much the wider context has an impact on negotiations? There's the potential for a second wave (I am not interested in conspiracy theories or a discussion on epidemics), which could mean another suspension, a further loss of income, etc. It seems that our transfer strategy is about trying to keep initial fees low, placing emphasis on clauses and contingencies. The potential suspension of football raises the risk associated with such clauses, on the part of the payee. So the people we're trying to sign, and the clubs we're trying to sign them off, must take this into account?

Or maybe I'm just really bitter about Fulham and Antonee Robinson.

What do you lot think?

Isn’t it pretty standard across the majority of transfers to include for add ons based on performances etc.? I don’t think we’re doing anything different than in other windows or different to what other clubs are doings.

It’s just a slow window so far, I’m sure like usual it will pick up as we get closer to deadline day.

Some are more careful than others, couldn't see us offering a kid 50k a week.

We paid a hefty whack for a goalkeeper... not sure we’re keeping fees low

As young, English players go, and as very young goalkeepers with top-flight experience go, (see Pickford), I'd say I disagree with you that it was a hefty whack, relatively.

We also waived the sell on clause, so that’s another couple of million it cost us.

Aye, I'm not denying he was expensive for us. I do think overall he was a good deal though.

I’m not saying it’s a bad deal it’s about the going rate these days. We’ll find out when he plays how good the deal is, like with every signing.

The business and finance team at the lane have put a wage structure in place, and that structure has the full support of Chris Wilder. See his stance in the Lundstram negotiations.
While there is still plenty of cash in the current game, it’s up to clubs to set their own boundaries, and stick to them.
Our policy is clearly different to that of Fulham for example. I know many blades fans are frustrated by this policy and would prefer us to spend more on wages, to get deals over the line.
I sympathize with that view, but such organic growth in costs must come slowly, to protect our achievements under CWAK.
For every Gareth Bale and David de Gea, there are twenty John Lundstrams, toiling away on much lower weekly salaries.
Witness the collapse of the big spending Barcelona business model based on Messi leaving rumours, and be grateful we don’t have a Brentford business model where talent has to be sold off to keep it running.
We are doing ok, just be patient and let Wilder watch the pennies for sustainable success.

I absolutely agree, I hope this didn't come across as me slating our strategy! I just reckon it's been particularly difficult for us relative to a lot of other clubs this window.

Not a critique, just my observation of it. Difficult window under extraordinary circumstances. I prefer our slightly more cautious approach to those who will throw money at the problem and just hope they might get it right. 🤭

If we’re speaking relatively, last season we made several transfers in excess of 10m, it’s certainly not the biggest but still a big fee to pay

And it was the priority position once we knew Hendo wouldn’t be back

Surely it makes perfect sense to be circumspect and cautious at the moment? Plus spunking moneh isn't Tufty's way.

Whisper it, but there's still a chance we could be relegated this coming season, so suddenly starting to pay £40/50k a week just because we had one good season would be ludicrous.

I think the way we're going about business is very smart and wouldn't be surprised at all to see others copying over coming years...

Have we not already spent in this window more than any club outside the top 6 ?
I just don’t see the concern when we are not yet half way through the window.

We didn't waive the sell on clause, we factored it into the fee. So it didn't cost us anything, it saved us money.
We only paid just over 10mil upfront.

Again, I agree, the point of my post wasn't to question our approach. Just observing that external circumstances must make such an approach particularly difficult at the moment.

I'm not concerned at all.

I think the impact of covid is more in the long term planning of clubs as opposed to the short term. It’s reasonable assume that all premier league clubs could absorb a season of reduced income without much concern if they could be assured of a return to normal revenue streams the season after but currently that isn’t the case. It’s looking like this coming season will certainly be impacted in terms of income from match day revenue and there still appears to be some conflict with tv companies over streaming of matches. And beyond this season no ones knows anything really regarding fans I’d imagine it’s thrown a lot of clubs medium-long terms plans out of shape. Making some clubs more cautious in the market.

A factor that maybe effecting valuations is players and empty stadiums. One of our strengths is BDTBL and the atmosphere that inspires the team. Now that is gone for this season, how our players respond without the roar of support will be key to our season. If CWAK is adding such a factor into recruitment the net might be focusing on clubs who play at big empty soulless stadiums so ruling out Cash at Forest and ruling in Swift at Reading.

I'm not interested in one either, but I'd take the treble of Diego di Girolamo playing a game for Juventus, Terry Kennedy suddenly having functional knees and Juanpi signing at the same price as a second wave

I hope you are right, I just don't share your optimism. What makes you think it's so unlikely, out of interest?

We've been there, we've done that, haven't we?
Let's hope we never have to go there again

Agree with needing patience and watching pennies as wee

All the data.
So does the R-rate increasing to ~1 not concern you in the slightest? I really don't get how people can be so certain either way, makes for an unprepared response.

Let's keep this thread to transfers mate, if you want to debate Covid data there's a thread in General for it. But no, not in the slightest

The impact of Covid and a potential second lockdown on transfer strategy will mean clubs from the Championship downwards holding out for silly money on their prized assets, hoping to fill the coffers in case the money train comes to a halt again (if there's a second lockdown don't be expecting fans back in stadiums at all next season).

Clubs like ours are probably turning our noses up at most of these valuations, knowing that come the deadline these lower league clubs will rather sell for summat than nowt

We only paid just over 10mil upfront.

It will be even less if we've also factored in any money outstanding from the Brooks sale.
