Could we do a GB team ?

I don't disagree in principle, but you would have to have some kind of weighted voting based on the size of the football playing community in each country.

This is getting bizarre. How do you think senior bods in organisations like the FA are appointed, by the finger of God?

I don't know the exact way the top echelons of the FA are appointed but I do know the principle is elective. Member clubs of the FA elect teh Council and (I think) the Council then elects the chair.

Sort of. The FA board go looking for a candidate, then recommend that person to the FA council, who get to approve/disprove the recommendation. The FA council certainly don't vote on a list of candidates. It's democratic but only in the flimsiest sense.

But getting back to the original point, you appeared to be arguing that national associations don't represent anyone. They clearly do. If whoever the FA's delegate was to the meeting choosing the WC venue chose country B when the Council had said he should vote for country A, I think he would be in deep shit with the Council when he got back.

There's one thing for sure, if Scotland vote for independence, they won't be in a GB team for any sport - and what will happen to the Union Flag?

I'd replace the saltire element with black - in remembrance and also because I think a red and white Union Flag would look stoopid.

Actually the original point was that you were arguing for some sort of proportional representation in the way that World cups were voted for.

I was just pointing out that was bollocks :)
 
I think we should have a Team GB but only because it would we'd have Land Of Hope & Glory as the National Anthem. A million times better than God Save The Fucking Queen.

Given that England makes up 85% of the population of the UK you would expect 8-9 players in any UK team to be English. In the 70's you would have probably got a good half of the team non English (Best, Jennings, Dalglish, Bremner, Souness etc etc)

I think Seamus Coleman is a lot better than Glen Johnson,just to add to Bale.

Ramsay is a no for me,i prefer Wilshere,Barclay and Lallana over Ramsay anyday.
 
Saw a similar thread on another forum and decided to see if the topic had come up on S2 yet.

As far as I'm concerned, no. 10 Englishmen and Bale isn't exactly the UK. Not to mention that some players would have objections to playing for the UK instead of their individual country. I support Team GB at the Olympics, but merging all four home nations into one would be too much faffing about for the four FAs, UEFA and FIFA.
 
The thought of sharing a team with our psychotically hateful neighbours doesn't really appeal to me. In fact they'd have to segregate the England section from the rest of the supporters during matches.

Then again I don't mind the idea of having 4 national sides that I don't give a fuck about consolidated into one team.

Was about to say the same. After a lifetime of watching dire football from the Welsh side, to read the OP as Wales are just on the brink of qualification would be (hopefully) like April next year mooting a merger with the unclean.
 
No for so many reasons.

However in football terms, you'd only really have Bale and Ramsey who were not English. The Scottish and Northern Irish would hate it.

For the political reasons mentioned, this will always be a no-go IMO. However, just for shits n giggles, would anyone even get in the squad outside of Ramsay and Bale?

Between them, they have a few decent young players who might challenge at some point (Henley, Hanley, Robertson, Gauld, Reeves) for a place in the squad but there’s only Bale that would make a significant impact on England’s first team.

That being said, an England team with Bale in it would be an interesting prospect (though not as good IMO as an England team with Giggs in it 15 years ago would have been).

ps. Bushblade. I think it's quite obvious a BM migrant transferred this to General Blades chat before it popped back up. Now it's on the front page, blades madders will be starting threads about GB teams left right and centre just to annoy the locals.
