I almost down graded my question to "could the women's England team give us a game?" But I'm not sure just being male wins this for us.
Just wondered what everyone thought

In a 'behind closed doors' friendly a few weeks ago, our U17's beat them 3-0 at St George's Park. This was played at the women's request as part of their WC preparations.

Given that the U17s weren't completely pedal to the floor then you'd assume the first team would thrash them. I accept some on here would dispute that if Coutts was playing....

Ah, I didn't know that.
I genuinely wondered what kind of level they were at. I'm sure the women didn't go 100% so close to such an important tournament but 3-0 to our under 17s pretty much confirms they probably wouldn't cut it in league 2

Technically they are getting closer in my opinion, but they'll never be able to match the physical side of the game in terms of strength and speed. It's just one of those things.

I've enjoyed the Women's World Cup alot more than I expected to. It's been very entertaining.

Women's football is like TwentyTwenty cricket. Mildly interesting, but no substitute for the real thing.
In the words of Samuel Johnson:
"A woman playing football is like a dog walking on its hind legs;
It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all.

I jest. I'm really enjoying the women's world cup. Come on, let's beat Japan, get to the final and win!!

Not sexist. Just telling it like it is.

A bang average L1 men's side would tonk the England women's team. Would do well to keep it in single figures.

UTB

I think we could, they seem messy. They don't retain possession. However I would watch out for that Jodie Taylor

Had the same the discussion the other day and we were trying to determine, in respect of the current league set up where the woman's team would be competitive - I suggested something like the conference north league potentially a few leagues lower, from a technical point of view it's refreshing to watch the teams but physically its not even comparable to the mans game.
Goalkeepers though, 3rd division of the sunday imperial league.
As above comments actually enjoying watching the womens world cup and good luck to them against Japan.

Would be a battering, double figures at least and I've actually enjoyed watching this women's team.

I watched a game similarly to what I should coco said but the cricket equivalent. England women (the world champions at the time) were playing against England U17/18's a couple of years back and were quite comfortably beaten to say the least.

That said, I have been one of the harshest critics of women's football over the last few years. But this tournament has really caught my imagination, I've actually enjoyed a few of the games.

Yes we would, but that shouldn't be a indication of where the women's game is currently. It would be like putting up Serena Willilams up against any man in the top 200. Yes she would lose, mainly due to the additional physical power and natural athleticism of her male opponent, however the women's game has it's own merits which should be celebrated and enjoyed in it's own right.

Just to put it in perspective, I used to referee the odd ladies game , Doncaster belles at their peak and Arsenal v liverpool, and I doubt if theyd beat a good regional sunday league team , they may have beaten the 1974/5 Wednesday team though , they are without doubt the worst team in sheffield history

Serena Williams is good example actually, she relies on her power. She's got technique and skill but let's be fair she's ahead of all the rest because she's a physical anomaly.
I follow MMA(mixed martial arts) and there's a woman competing in the ufc that is that good fans are constantly asking how'd she match up against a man which is crazy.
If women are in a sport where size, power and strength is a huge advantage then they are never going to be on the same level, but in football those three things- while being a massive bonus- aren't essential. So I don't really understand why some of these women can't reach the standards of their make counterparts. Murphy wouldn't beat half of the English lasses in a arm wrestle, but as for footballing technique none come close.

Size, power and strength is a huge part of the men's game, even just shielding the ball or riding challenges requires some of those skills.

Broadly speaking, men are better at all sports regardless of whether size and strength are an advantage.

Golf (debatable), Curling, Snooker, Darts...

That's just the way it is.

The only thing you could argue women are better at is gymnastics but that's because being smaller gives you the advantage.

I'm only playing devils advocate, but it's all relative. They'd be shielding the ball and riding challenges from other women.

Jodie Taylor's opening goal the other night v Canada was a real cracker. Great control and finish.

Agreed - but the Canadian keeper went down in instalments. That goal encapsulated the women's game at the moment - some great technique from Taylor but a horrible mistake from the Canadian centre half then a soft bit of goalkeeping. She (the Canadian keeper) didn't exactly cover herself with glory with England's second either.

Don't get me wrong though - they're all miles better than most of us on here.

Yes comfortably. That's not to discredit their fantastic achievements so far but any professional men's team would beat them.

It could be close if the women were to use some distracting tactics, that's when it could all go tits up for us if we start fannying around:)

I don't normally enjoy watching women's football but I have enjoyed the latter stages of this tournament. When you think how long men have been playing football to how long the women's game has been in existence then obviously standards cannot be compared.
There is also the difference in height and weight between men and women, however I do feel that the women's game , if it continues to progress, which I think it will, will certainly improve over the next few years.
The refreshing thing about the women's game tho is the lack of diving and rolling about when tackled. The men's game could certainly take note of that.

If we could penetrate the defence we have every chance of coming. Away with a win :p

I stayed up to watch us beat Canada. I watch women's football fairly often but the league in this country is poor. Most of the players are semi-pro and it shows.
I think the England players are full time and the standard does seem to have improved, even over the ten or so years I've been watching it. I thought the commitment and teamwork was first class. Canada had a really physical and cynical approach, tried to take our players out and fell over when touched.

I watch Conference football too and it's generally a better standard than the women's international teams so, in answer to the OP, we'd beat them easily. Unless it was a playoff final, then we'd lose on pens.

Agree but Canada were rolling all over the place. Did you see Buchanan try to take out one of our players and end up on her arse, trying to make out she'd been fouled? Never seen it before to that extent in the women's game. They must have won ten decisions in that game that weren't even fouls.
