We have a number of players whose contracts run out in summer, and no doubt quite a few more who would like a better deal. Chris Wilder isn't entertaining any players contract talks until the end of the season. I think that's fair enough tbh. Let's know for sure what division we will be in and then discuss new contracts accordingly.

Also I think there are going to be some disappointed players as well - so that's another good reason not to start discussing contracts now because clearly there will be a number of players, currently in and around the first team squad, who won't be getting a new contract. So we don't want them moping around now and creating a bit of an atmosphere.

Who will those players be that we let go? Here's my guess...

Long
Hussey
Wilson
Scougall
Done
Clarke
McNulty
Reed
Ebanks-Landell

(I know Ebanks-Landell isn't our player - but I'm saying I don't think we'll make the move permanent).

I wouldn't lose any sleep over any of the above leaving tbh. In fact I'd go as far as to say it's necessary, in order to strengthen the squad overall and allow some room for growth of our younger talent.

Tough to reply to that, you've possibly picked 80% of the released list there.l

I hope we sign jay o shea permanent.

If by letting go you mean not renewing contracts then I doubt this will apply to Clarke, Hussey or Wilson as they all signed for longer than 1 year so it will be a case of paying up or entering the transfer merry go round. As it happens I think they will all have several suitors from leagues 1 and 2.

Wilson, Long, Reed, Hussey and Clarke all have contacts until 2018 at the earliest (Clarke is 2019) so there is no "letting them go". We'd have to either pay them off or find willing new clubs.

The out of contract first team players are Done, Scougall, Coutts, Freeman, McNulty, Basham and Sharp. I can't see Coutts, Freeman, Basham or Sharp leaving but the others probably will.

I think out of the bunch you list, I think we'll only definitely let go Hussey, McNulty, Wilson and possibly Clarke (let go as in sell this should say).

Wouldn't surprise me to see Long, Done and Scoogs retained.

I'd be astounded if Reed went. Needs a full season on loan somewhere.

Scougall, McNulty and Done should be released.

We should have takers for Wilson, Hussey, K Wallace and Clarke but may have to subsidise their wages a bit.

We should sell Brayford for whatever we can get.

I don't think we should sign EEL or O'Shea permanently, although I wouldn't be totally against signing EEL for the right price. Then there's Chapman who will have gone back, although we could try to re-sign him.

Reed has to go out on loan.

We should consider any offers for Long, loan or permanent but also be open to keeping him.

After this we'll have a good core of around 15 to build from, which I think is ideal. About 7/8 new signings in addition to our youngsters would give us the right sort of squad size.

Out of that list I'd send Reed out on loan and keep Scouggs as a useful player late on as he's proved this season he can get a vital goal. He is still young enough and will be on low wages, he's worth keeping to see how he progresses with better players around him, he has potential.

The Champ will be a decent step-up in class (if Utd manage to get there of course!) and those players currently unable to get close to the 1st team will have no chance.

Personally, out of those listed in the posts above the only ones I'd even consider keeping are EEL (at the right price i.e. <£500k) and Clarke (as an option from the bench and likely to be too costly to let go anywhere else without heavily subsidising).

The argument for keeping Reed I understand but even if he goes out on loan for a season, is he really ever going to threaten the first team again? IMO no and I'd much rather nurture Whiteman as a longer term option.

I don't think JO'S is good enough for the Champ either, nor Riley from the little I saw but I'd be keen to explore getting Chapman back for the season although there's a decent chance he'll be facing us unless the new incumbent at M'boro can turn their fortunes around

I agree with a Reed loan. I like the way he sees a pass and gives it quickly. See if regular games on loan sparks the necessary development.
Scougall too lightweight in spite of his good points. Done only useful to stretch the defence of a team having to chase a game,so not really worth a championship wage for that. Clarke on the longer deal he has is probably worth keeping as an experienced squad player. Never been that impressed with the rest of those mentioned so okay if they go.

How the hell can people on here at this time of the season think that this kind of silly post is anything but detrimental to team spirit ?

It is a forum we are allowed to discuss things like this

Isn't Coutts still holding back on signing a new deal? Not sure if Freeman is doing the same.

We won't be shifting Clarke on anytime soon with that 3 deal we gave him.

You can't ask a question then nail it with your own answer, it makes for a short thread.:)

Moore, JOC, Fleck, Duffy, Sharp arguably the back bone of the team. Any players left or right of them up for question IMO in the summer - agnostic of any contracts of course.
