Hi new poster here by the way! Just thought I'd start off with a thread about Sammon been viewing this a bm and whenever his name pops up people are certain he wouldn't work but my opinion is not that. He is just the sort of player we need and should be looking at to most likely conclude our business he's nothing like porter like people have said he isn't slow although he looks it he's very good on the ball and can run at defenders yes his goal scoring record isn't great but he's played at derby off the bench mostly and Wigan in the top flight cloughy bought him for a large fee I believe. A striker like sharp would be a disaster in my opinion the way we set up he can't run at the back four due to lack of pace we were crying out for some presence up top last year who also is a ball player Clayton Donaldson would be a good match in my opinion just what we need ps not Connor Sammon/his agent;)

I just don't rate him, not seen/ read anything to make me think he will be a success even in this leauge.
Who else is there out there mate? trust me when I say he is the style of striker we need to do well I can't think of many a fit and firing ched e would work but I think it would split fan base

I'm struggling to generate a list of alternatives, but surely we can do better. We have no goalscorers, other than a gamble from Scotland (fingers crossed), so we need to get this one right. Sammon's record is quite poor, but might improve down a level - but can we afford that gamble?

I've just get the feeling that that it would work. yes it would be a gamble but every transfer is clough will now him all I know is if we sign billy sharp I will be incredibly disappointed and negative about our attacking options .

I struggle to see how a striker who averages almost a goal every other league game (scoring rate of 0.42 goals per game) throughout his whole career would disappoint you, yet one with a paltry return of 0.15 goals per game can be "the sort of player we need".

We have an abundance of central midfielders and our share of top notch wingers for this level to supply the ammunition. The sort of player we need is a poacher who can get on to drilled crosses, rebounds and through balls, using a striker's instinct, good reactions, positional awareness and good finishing. A fit, motivated Billy fits the bill. I haven't seen Sammon play, I will hold my hands up to that, but a return of just over a goal every ten games doesn't suggest he's the right sort of player to me.

I just think Sammon is the 'type' of player we should be looking at and having watched him I think he would work in our current system if sharp signs and he scores 20goals you've proved me wrong I just don't think that will happen

Welcome, but how anyone can look at Billy vs Sammon's records and truly believe Sammon is the better option is beyond me. Can't understand anyone who doesn't think Sharp would be a success in this league. Especially against all the other names which have been thrown up, Sharp must be our primary target for me. Sammon is awful!

Why is a player with a strike rate worse than Porter 'the type of player' we should be looking at
I would rather play Murphy down the middle if thats where you suggest Sammon plays, the little I have seen of him he was playing wide

Nah mate, his scoring rate is abyssmal,we need a proper striker(Ched like),Sammon is an inbetweener, and we've just signed plenty of them !
115 apps in english lges,withjust 11 goals,aint what we're after!
Ffs,even the pigs had a look at him and decided he wern't for them !

Derby fans say he can't finish but is big and strong and would be good in league one. Although He's been in form for Ireland and all Ireland fans rate him. From what I've seen he's just a bigger, stronger and slightly quicker Porter. He is also one of those players that Clough seems to favourites so wouldn't be surprised if he signed him.

Disagree DB , Must Irish fans don't rate him at all , also hardly gets a game ,
Used to come on as a sub for Jonathan Walters under Trap , must Irish fans want Long , Doyle , Stokes , Or Keane , Sammon is done a long list , the Nordie McClean , the jock playing at Everton Mcgeady , and Hoolahan would be in before him mate .
UTB .

Sharp or failing that that kid from Scunny would be better options that Sammon

I think there are serious doubt due to Billys record over the past 24 months.

I know that (although his record still isn't bad over the last 24 months). However, Sammon has never proven himself at ANY level, and has never scored goals so why he should be considered is beyond me. Billy still the best option available.

Connor Sammon is faster than Billy? And can run at defenders and billy cant? Come on now...

Hi Connor

Sharp and Sammon aren't what we need, they're both at the stage in their career where they'd demand relatively high wages yet offer diminishing returns.

Clayton Donaldson is apparently off to Birmingham City, following the cash. A Brentford supporting mate at work isn't that bothered to see the back of him - he's quick without enough end product in his opinion.

Sharp would be a disaster?! Bearing in mind Porter got the best part of 10 goals in 2/3 of a season in this side, you seriously think Sharp would be disastrous?

Are people losing the plot or is it me? :)

Of course, it raises the question of who is available / suitable?

Our Nige has made fantastic signings and he knows a lot more about his targets than any of us do and I cannot believe some in here criticising the players they know little about. Leave it all to Nige, sit back and enjoy watching the World Cup!

Yes he is much more pacey/mobile than billy you clearly haven't seen him play I'm not going to change my opinion just because people criticise Sammons goal scoring ability in the system we play with 1 striker Sammon or similar would be the much better option he's played in the top flight so why people even compare him to porter is beyond me UTBUTB

Yes, you're right that Sammon is quicker and more mobile than Sharp, and stronger and more aggressive than Porter. For a tall man Derby fans say he's disappointing in the air, but if we do need flick ons Porter would be the one to turn to.

They do at the moment, seems to be in form for Ireland is what I meant.

16 goals in 61 games?

I see another thread challenging cloughs knowledge on whats needed to make a challenge for promotion.
he is building his squad the way he sees it lets leave him too it you can have your say if it all goes wrong.
have said it before here it is again CLOUGHI knows what he,s doing trust him.
he knows only too well we need a poacher and sammon would,nt be signed for that roll.
I want a poacher signed as much as any one but we need to relax a bit there is plenty of time.
