The Queen's Birthday Honours have just been announced and our own Gary Speed has just been awarded an MBE.

Congratulations Gary.

I see that Catherine Zeta-Jones has got a gong, too.

That would be for services to the elderly, no doubt. ;-)

Well done Speedo! A footballing legend before he arrived at the lane and always seems adecent bloke too. I'm proud that Speed is a Blade and I'm proud that Speed has been given an MBE whilst at the lane.

Does anyone know if anyone at the club has received honours before (whilst serving at the club?) $
Did Dooley get anything?
Does this mean that the Queen is a Blade? Nah nah nah nah maams a Blade and maams a Blade!

Finally,If you're reading this HRH, then - Happy Birthday maam, you looked well at the Trooping the Colour earlier, long may you continue to reign :)

Yeah I understand, but I think that the troops probably welcome this chance to show off their regiment

Even though the country is up to its eyeballs in debt, we shouldn't stop these celebrations as a lot of people get enjoyment out of these events. The military personnel that troop the colour, the families of those involved and the public in general. I got an enormous sense of pride for our forces when I was watching yesterday

I'm also not sure how much this costs, but its likely that the TV rights are sold around the globe as well.

And if the trooping of the colour should be stopped because we're in a recession then so should the awards that Gary Speed has been given

How about if they weren't..?;)

Whilst I respect your right to be anti Royal, can you name me any other 84 year old woman - or man - who spends so much time in the service of their country?

If we do away with royalty - who would you put in their place as President - Tony Blair, with Cherie the First Lady?

Or why not go with the popular vote and make Simon Cowell president. I'm sure he'd gladly give up his time when he's 84.

She gets paid very handsomely for that 'service.'

Thank you sir, I was just about to reply with the same sentiment.

Popular vote?? POPULAR vote??? If that's true, this planet is more fucked up than even I imagined.

I agree broomers that people are entitled to their opinion - mine just happens to differ from the anti-Royalists.
On average, the Queen perfoms more than one public engagement per day.
She performs a valuable public service (nationally and internationally) that goes beyond discussions about whether or not we should have a Royal Family. The benefits of having a Royal Family far outweigh any benefits gained from not having one.
We have a Royal Family that is, generally, the best that any nation could have. If we abolished the institution then nothing would change for the average citizen, nothing. We would lose, however, a marvellous national figurehead.

Is Simon Cowell more powerful than Jesus?
Sure, Jesus can turn water into wine, but Simon Cowell can turn sh*t into money.

Yep! ^What he said^

I think the whole Royal family are great, sure they have their faults, but which family doesn't!

With Harry and William now doing their military service I think it further reinforces the hard work that they are prepared to do. I think it also gives a major boost to know that the forces knowing that the two lads are going into battle with them, except in the interest of national security they are doing everything else that normal servicemen will do

Yes, you may well have a point but you could argue, conversely, that Cowell contributes more to the economy than Her Maj and the rest of the hive. Whilst it’s true that foreign tourists do head to the shit hole that is the capital in the vain hope of rubbing shoulders with Lizard Liz, wrinkly old Liz and her hatchlings do take a hell of a lot of money out of the coffers for their upkeep and well being. Cowell on the other hand has created his own wealth and thus will have paid, and is likely still paying, a very tidy sum in income tax and NI. Plus there is all of the shite that he has turned into top earners that will all no doubt be haemorrhaging their ‘hard earned’ (a-hem) in the direction of the treasury too.

Anyway, Jesus couldn’t do all that shit. The nearest you can get to that is the human metabolism, which is the only process known to mankind for turning real ale into lager… ;)

Good old Bruce Forsyth? :-)

I don't really like the fact that the pinaccle of our society is a family that were born into extreme wealth, I do however appreciate that some members of the family do work hard and to be fair it can't be much fun after 80 years of riding around waving at people and talking small talk shite to many people you don't know and will never meet again.

In terms of trooping the colours and such events I agree that they're pompous but I'm mighty glad we don't just stop because of a recession. I actually like them and think it helps set us apart from many countries that either don't have a history that stretches over 100 years or those that don't do their all to retain such traditions/ceremonies. In a way I find it quaint and at the same time impressive that we can continue something for over 400 years.

If I was the Queen I'd perhaps like a little variety though rather than sitting through the same birthday party every year without fail :-)

Good and probably best point is however that this ceremony gives a sense of pride both for and towards the army and for this reason alone I think it's especially important at the moment.

She has missed a few, but not many. Besides its not so much for her as for the troops, so I reckon she's actually putting herself out on her own birthday

And she does like a bit of variety, hence the "royal variety performance" :)

The reason our monarchs celebrate an official birthday stems back to a practice whereby the monarch's official biorthday was celebrated in "summer" in the hope of bettrer weather for a public celebration. It was custom and practice throughout Europe and several of our monarchs such as William III and Edward VII celebrated official birthdays in June.

The custom of Trooping the Colour dates back to the time of Charles II in the 17th. Century when the Colours of a regiment were used as a rallying point in battle and were therefore trooped in front of the soldiers every day to make sure that every man could recognise those of his own regiment. In London, the Foot Guards used to do this as part of their daily Guard Mounting on Horse Guards and the ceremonial of the modern Trooping the Colour parade is along similar lines. The first traceable mention of The Sovereign's Birthday being 'kept' by the Grenadier Guards is in 1748 and again, after George III became King in 1760, it was ordered that parades should mark the King's Birthday. From the accession of George IV they became, with a few exceptions and notably the two World Wars, an annual event.
The regiments take their turn for this honour in rotation as operational commitments permit.

The Colours also contain tabs referring to all the battles the Regiment has fought in so to the soldiers in each Regiment, the Colours represent not only honour in battle, but also remind us of those who fell in those battles, many of which were fought to allow us the freedom to hold debates such as this, aye, and to castigate the Monarchy! ;)

Thank you, Jennie Bond.

I'm very anti-Royalist. I don't think that anyone should be able to take millions per year from the civil list as it is their birthright, and i resent them for doing it.

As for the money they bring in from tourism, i think anyone who comes here solely for a glimpse of the Queen is not coming to the UK for all the right reasons, there is plenty more to see and do over here than to solely see that family of fucking parasites.

I absolutely resent 10p per month coming out of my wages to pay for someone who already has fabulous wealth and a string of luxury estates, extensive business interests, and opulent lifestyle to pay for. I've probably paid around £20 during my lifetime to subsidise someone elses lifestyle who can more than afford it.

Britians head of state should be someone democratically elected, not someone born in to an inbred family of toffs.
