Personally I'm glad Tonge's gone (been waiting for a few years now for it to happen) and it'll be interesting to see if he sets the Premiership alight at Stoke...very much doubt it. Good piece of business as far as we are concerned, we've just got to wait and see what Blackie does about the midfield now!

2.25m is a good price for Tonge but its just very bad timing especially if he doesn't rate spring or Hendrie above Tonge.

Hendrie has been injured for the last few games, but seemed to be playing well during pre-season, depending whether he's fit after the break could be what we need. He's certainly proven it before, just not for us!

Cant be any worse than Tonge Hendrie has already Equalled Tonges Goal tally for the whole of last season in one game.

Shame some people cant give Tongey a little bit of credit after 8 years and nearly 300 games for us.

Still, just about shows you what alot of Sheffield United fans are about. Why would Tonge want to stay? Look at what he has to put up with every week.

I wish him well at his new club.

He has been great for this club but its unfortunate he is no longer the player he once was. He hasn't left this club on bad terms and I am sure he will get a warm reception when he returns to the lane even if he is playing for another club.

Credit where credit is due, he had some good times with us, and we will thank him for that.

Could the same not be said for fans? His performances haven't been upto scratch, so does that show what Tonge is about?

Tonge has received plenty of just credit for what he achieved 5 years ago and his commitment to the club. He has been a loyal servant and NW has to receive credit for bringing him on.

However, all these don't override the feelings that many have, myself included, that he needed a fresh start to get the best out of him. Just because he's always been at United doesn't mean he should always be here.

He has the talent but lacked the confidence or drive to put it into use. No professional footballer should fluff as many set-pieces as he has over these past few months.

Good luck to him, but I'm not upset he's gone Sharpy. I find it amusing that you in particular cannot stomach the pointing out of one player's flaws... you're usually quite good at that.

i agree i think he does need a fresh start with another club, be a better outlet for him he has been a loyal player for so long and i say good luck to him :)

Im pretty sure I've said many times that Tonge is the most inconsistent player I've ever seen.

People harping on about 5 years ago never helped, that season was the worst thing that could have happened for MT, he was never going to top it.

Im not that bothered he's gone, im more concerned about his replacement.

I would thank Tonge for all he's done for United over the last few years.
But I for one believe that this move is good for Both sides.
Tonge for getting back into the Premiership
and United mainly due to the fact that Tonge was a player that seemed to be one of the first on the team sheet so he may have got complacent and have not been playing 100% all of the time.
Any player that comes into central midfiled now will be fresh and looking to keep that spot so have the desire to play 100%.
Possiblilities in my opinion Hendrie, Spring, Monty, Nicky Law (if he's still with us, not sure), Squinny (Play Carney on left), Webber (Obviously more attacking midfield), Halford (if Cotterill on wing) and Nicky Travis.
So we could be quite stretched i midfield with so few choices  :D

As far as I know, Sensi, we've still got Nicky Law. He was another player who I was thinking about when the Tonge news came through.

Cheers HH.

Just making the point that we're hardly lacking in Midfield players who could step up or adjust position to fill the more attcking Midfiled position at the side of Speed.

Story from the OS...

OS said:
Michael Tonge has left the Blades for Premiership newboys Stoke City on a tide of mutual goodwill.

The Potteries outfit's deadline swoop on Monday night brought to an end the 25 year old's ten year association with United, a move that proved something of a wrench for both parties.

Following Kevin Blackwell's earlier comments Tonge, after spending his first morning as a City player, agreed:

"United has been my life for so long that not being a Blade will take some getting used to for a while. I would like to thank staff and fans who have been good to me there over the years - I really do wish them, and the Club, all the luck in the world.

"The move hasn't sunk in at all yet, and I am just going with the flow. Last night everything happened so quickly and certainly wasn't anything that had been planned by any of us.

"It was one of those difficult situations but it is probably the right time for me to move on. There are no hard feelings on either side, the Gaffer gave me the chance to get back into the Premiership and when he did that my mind was made up really."

The Manchester born player will have a good opportunity to bed in with his new club owing to there being an International break coming up. Then Stoke take on Everton which throws up a meeting with former team-mate Phil Jagielka.

Yep... Nicky Law came on as a second half sub at Retford last night.

He was bombing forward too.
