Given everyone was so eager to jump on the negative comments on the Walsall message boards re: Westlake, here's some of the initial reaction from Crewe:

"Seemed to be going backwards last season and was eclipsed by the youngsters. Could well be time to let him go and try to find his form again elsewhere"

"I think some forget he started very well last season with quite a few goals in the opening games however his slump in form and loss of confidence coincided with an overall poor team performance then when we came good he couldnt get back in."

"I remember how prolific he was in league one for us a few seasons ago..him & donaldson scored a fair few between them..so he's definitely got the talent...just getting it out of him now."

"He will come good this season. Only the short sighted amongst us can't see his potential!"

"Too good to let go. Most experienced forward we have. Great back up if nothing else."

"Sounds to me more of a personality issue with SD rather than ability and worth to the squad. Good players dont become bad players overnight. Maybe should move on if his chances are to be limited although I would like to see him stay and prove the doubters wrong."

80K Southampton.

We were looking to do a loan last season with Philliskirk and Tonne with him coming this way but it never came off.

18 posts in without mention of a young forward signed from Doncaster for a similar sum....

True, true but that was a long time ago. Not sure you can compare £40K in 1988 with £60K now.
£60K in todays terms is farcical tbh, as others have said "undisclosed" would be better for all parties....

This team was crying out for pace and we have brought in Cofie and this guy seems to have it too. McDonald will love chipping a few over the top for the guys as he was working with pedestrians last season.

Now then Bob........if you're going to post stuff i pass on to you, make sure you get it the right way round ;)

Utd were going to sign Miller last season but at the last minute Crewe wanted Philliskirk and Tonne on season loans. DW wouldn't agree to it so the deal was shelved

I'm just glad we're signing someone. I'll try and see his positives and we'll take it from there. Moving up a league to our great club could inspire whatever potential is in him and focus him. Let's just think he could be good eh? If he's shite after a full season then moan.

Grumpy sod, and I knew what I meant. ;)

Hindsight is a wonderful thing - but imagine if Danny had agreed to that?
Phillis and Tonne didn't contribute much last year (even for the clubs they were on loan to) and maybe this kid could have.

Just maybe we would have had a striker in the squad that could have scored goals in those crucial matches away at MK, home to Stevenage and away at Exeter as well as Wembley?

........................... Nah, that's just bollocks! What am I saying?
..................................................................................We never score in play off finals

It's getting to be a cheaper deal by the minute. £70k 'based on appearances' according to Crewe's local press. In the last year of his contract which may have helped lower the fee.

SHAUN Miller will leave Crewe for Sheffield United with the club's best wishes, says Alex assistant manager Neil Baker.

The 24-year-old striker left Crewe's training camp in Wiltshire to head to Sheffield yesterday after the Alex accepted a nominal fee believed to be around £70,000, based on appearances.

Miller, from Alsager, had a year left on his contract, but has been allowed to look for another club after failing to hold down a place last season.

The Academy graduate scored 43 goals in 179 games for the club, and Baker said: "It's a good move for him, and I think the time is right because he wasn't a regular in the team and some of our younger players have gone past him.

"But we wish him all the best. He is one of our own who has done very well for this club."

Miller scored six times in the first eight games of last season, but failed to hit the target again.

He subsequently lost his place in the side and was left out of the squad for the 2-0 League Two play-off victory over Cheltenham at Wembley in May.

Blades boss Danny Wilson was keen on Miller last summer and has moved again for the forward as he looks to build a League One promotion side after last season's play-off final defeat to Huddersfield.

Pedestrians that scored 90 odd goals last season between them.

I didn't miss those. We did however miss a plan b on most occasions and we still in the 3rd tier. Nothing much Danny could do last season, but he seems to be addressing pace this pre-season

What !!! we win most of our games and you say we had no plan B ?? What about the times we switched to 4-3-3 (Scunthorpe at home immediately springs to mind as does MK Dons away) and what about the 4-5-1 which saw us win the play off semi ? The other' plans' might not have worked all the time but they were certainly there

I am talking about changing plans midway through games when they are not going your way or you need a goal so the following games spring to mind.... Play Off final, pigs away etc; The games you are talking about are where we started and finished the same.

Putting Porter on for Cresswell is also not what I consider a change of plan.

I must have been at a different Scunthorpe at home game to you then!

So what your saying is Mob, that you saw us change to 4-3-3 once last season? and we played 4-5-1 three times because of injury. I expect better than you being pedantic ;)

For the final time, I am talking about PACE, just plain simple pace which we never had last season

But at the end of the day we hit 90 odd goals (a club record) and 90 points which for EVERY other season except one in ANY division since the play-offs started would have been enough to get us promoted. Simple as. We lost one game on penalties that stopped us going up. By any stretch of the imagination, that was not a bad system and would that pace have given us an extra three points? Or would it have left us with a bigger gap between midfield and the attack that could have put more pressure on us at the back?

Not quite right, it's the 5th highest number of goals in a season:

102 goals in 42 games in 1925-26
97 goals in 42 games in 1952-53
94 goals in 46 games in 1981-82
93 goals in 46 games in 1988-89

All except 1925-26 led to promotions (25-26 we were in the 1st division and finished 5th) - which was the point you were making.

But I also agree we lack pace which we should look to be adding this season

Lowton, Evans, O'Halloran, Matt Phillips, Jean Francois

Evans, Lowton and Francois are not known for their pace, well not by me anyway. Evans would have definitely benefited from someone pacey alongside him to open up the pitch IMO

O'Halloran was just shite IMO - Couldn't get on when we were just down to Porter.

I will give you Matty Phillips, umm all the way back in October when we last saw him

When did we make a substitution to introduce pace as a different plan? Especially upfront and out wide where you need it

Relax Sheffielder, your point is valid and relevant. You are right that we didn't rely on pace (most of the time) to score goals last seaon. Instead we had a lot more quality than most teams and were good enough to outpass them. We'll be without Lowton, Williamson, Evans and possibly Quinn next season and it will be more difficult to get by without pace. I'm glad DW is looking to reintroduce it.
