Ronaldo went for 80m quid - a stupid amount of money which would pay for several class players in replacement. Valencia went for 17m I believe. Again, a massive amount of cash, especially to a team with an average attendance like that of Wigan's.

6 million quid is not a stupid amount of money. It's not going to change the fortunes of our club. It's not the kind of money that can't be turned down. Put it this way: if league one Leeds can turn down that amount of money for Delph, why can't we?

if league one Leeds can turn down that amount of money

I'm not sure I'd be using Leeds as an example of prudent financial management tbh :)

We have no left back now as naysmith is out injured... we have been struggling for a new CB for a while and we have walker at RB.....

IMO it's not looking too good at the moment.... we need to build from the back and start buying some players.

Alright lads and lasses, just come on to ask what you think of KN's impending move and whether you think he can cut it after such a short career to date. Will he likely be a ressie or do you think he can come straight into our side?
I have heard 4m (At least thats what the local radio is saying), also heard Vic Anichebe could be part of a deal

At 4m Plus V.A you would be getting a superb deal. He's def one who can reach and possibly surpass Jags' achievements.

Without a doubt the next Right Back for England.
Another season with us playing like he has it will be ManUre or Chelsea making bids come this time next season.

For a player who has played how many games?

What sort of world do you live in then?

Football will implode big time one day!

One that sees other players go for truly astronomical fees. I'm not for one minute suggesting that the amounts of money flying round in the world of football are anything more than ridiculous, but they're the prices that the market bears. How much did Walcott go for? How about Bale? If we don't have to sell, why not hold out for some unbelievable amount of money? I wouldn't complain if we were getting in the region of £10m, as that really is stupid money, but we're not. If another team meets our valuation on any of our other players, will we sell those too? If so, we could well end up with no team... but a few quid in the bank. Not my idea of building for the future.

Its all well & good having a few extra Mill in the bank. But what about the Squad, team & season ahead????

And dont forget if teams see us getting nice fat cheques for players, that the players we seem to be interested in also will suddenly aquire an extra '0' somewere along the line.

And going back to Walcott. Is Naughton any less talented than him? I really dont think he is, when you strip all the Media Hype away.

All im asking for is we get a 'fee' that justifies the talent. And dont forget that Walcott hardley played any games for Southampton. And look how much he went for, with proposed add ons etc.

Exactly.

Why cant we hold out for silly money.

Especially since we don't need to sell.

Never been any different with regards to us though sell low and hope we can find someone better.

Because the world financial situation is not as good as it was when Arse signed Wallcott, I don't think they would pay as much for a player exactly the same as Wallcott now.

You can't just base it on past players though. So we sold those players and made a decent amount on them. So what? Does this mean that we should then sell all our other young guns as they're invariably going to be rubbish in seasons to come?

We can hold out for silly money, if we don't need to sell - which we've been told is the case. Or are we going to sell every player if someone meets our valuation? Like Ward; say we think he's worth £800k, just for arguments sake - would we take the money and look for a replacement if someone came in? Monty can't be worth that much - not more than £1.2m. If someone comes in, will we sell him too? Have we not got the ability to say no?

It's not that we're thinking of selling players that's the issue, really. It's the short-sightedness of taking the money every single time, added to the fact that we get more spin from the board than my washing machine.

Totally with ya, i'm just saying... history shows we haven't really "always sold low", because there are very few that went on to even live up to the value they went for :)

As fans we may have felt we were selling low, but as fans we also usually have an over-inflated opinion of our "best" players.

Monty can't be worth that much - not more than £1.2m. If someone comes in, will we sell him too? Have we not got the ability to say no?

Boro and another couple are circling round still at the moment, rumour has it, he wouldn't mind talking to them... However, I haven't got confirmation of that from the horses mouth yet :)

I think until we know the true ins and outs of the deal, it's a bit difficult to make that statement. I'd love us to keep both Kyles, I really would, but at the same time, I'd accept a certain level of a deal if it helped us further as a team in the long run. It's certainly easy to presume with our past though :).

I like the Board and the general way we run things, I know i'm biased but I think that we're progressing well, we're administered well and we seem to be quite an innovative club.

We've also come along way since in the last 10 years and to be honest I thought we'd progressed enough to get away from the "snap their hands off days"

However, whilst the rest of the club has moved on, we still seem to be stuck in the past with our desperate sales policy.

I don't want to be too critical of the past as we did what we had to do at the time because of the financial state we were in.

But now, things have moved on so far that we want to improve, not just balance the books.

The excuse of using the money to administer the club can't be used now as we have the staged payments from West Ham to do that and we keep hearing how we're well placed to compete. Its also not about the player as his contract is not crippling us or has he openly expressed a desire to move (i.e. handed a transfer request in like many players have done at other clubs).

The Sales policy needs to be addressed, if we want the money to plough back into the club then fine, I accept that, but lets play harder with the moneybags of the PL.

Whats the worst that can happen? They say no and they miss out on a potentially major talent? Or we hold out and at either keep our talent or sell for the best money possible.

One day i'd love to see us boss the sale on our terms...Lets not forget, its us that has something that THEY want not the other way around.

In all honesty, Foxy, I don't massively agree with this idea that we sell low either - Beattie apart (and there were reasons for that). The Jags transfer was out of our hands, but if it weren't for the clause in his contract, I'm sure we could have got an extra couple of million for him.

The thing with the Kyles is not that we're selling them low - as has been mentioned, we're not really under-selling them. Their value is based on potential development, and as such even a fee as low as £4m is a gamble for whichever club buys them. It's more that the amount of money we're reportedly agreeing on is not an amount that's going to make a massive difference to the club. Is an extra £5m really going to make a massive difference to us this year? If so, we're in a worse financial state than the club are letting on, and regardless of the effect vis-a-vis our dealings with other clubs, we as the fans should really be told. We don't need to know details, but what we would like to know is why we've got outside concerns like foreign teams, and closer to home why we're spending money on updating our stadium at risk for a World Cup that might never happen, and even if it does, it might not at our ground.

It just feels like now more than ever, the main thrust of the club is not on the playing staff and building a team that can challenge for the Premiership and stay there if we make it. I know I drone on about it, but I don't care about off-the-field activities; at best they're peripheral to the club, and at worst they're an unwelcome and financially-draining distraction. If we were showing as much ambition in the squad as we were with building things, I'd feel far less worried. And to me, ambition doesn't mean throwing millions of pounds down a black hole, a la Jack Walker, Mohamed al Fayed and Dave Whelan, but it does mean not selling the family silver for a pittance just because someone has offered us the cash.

Take your car. If someone offered you the market value for it, would you sell it and replace it with a banger, or would you tell them to bugger off and keep it?

Kyle Naughton deal takes a U-turn...

Everton officials were in shock today after Sheffield United staged an astonishing about turn that has threatened Kyle Naughton’s dream move to Goodison Park.

As revealed in Saturday’s Echo, the Blues had agreed a £5m fee with United and personal terms with the right-back but were rocked by late interest from Tottenham and Aston Villa.

However, United had released a statement on their official website confirming that they had agreed a deal with Everton and indicated they wanted Naughton to go to Merseyside, given the success Phil Jagielka has enjoyed since he made a similar move in July 2007.

Everton were anticipating that Naughton would arrive on Merseyside for a medical over the weekend and were confident of being able to have him on board for next week’s trip to the United States.

But Spurs subsequently made an improved offer to Bramall Lane’s money men that has dramatically changed the landscape.

United are now refusing to talk with Everton – nor will they let Naughton speak to anyone at Goodison – because of Harry Redknapp’s late attempt to hijack the deal.

Not surprisingly, Everton’s hierarchy are furious with United’s conduct, as they genuinely believed Naughton was on his way to sign for them.

Though hugely frustrated by United’s volte face, Everton still hold the trump card in the fact that Naughton, who played his last game for the Blades in their 1-0 win against Floriana in Malta on Friday, has made it clear that Goodison is his favoured destination.

I'd be angry if this is true.

Blues boss David Moyes, meanwhile believes Jo can take his form up another level after the Brazilian international starts his second loan spell at the club."

If that's true, I can't see it doing our reputation much good!

.

Walcotts final transfer fee was only just over £7 million if I recall correctly,

In my opinion had a lot more potential than Naughton too.

IF this is true, then it looks like this could have been close to the mark

http://www.sheff-utd.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=163260&postcount=7

Apparently it was on Radio Sheff about this and the club have refused to comment...

More likely some more dodgy goings-on from Harry 'the Geezer' Redknapp.

He probably appeared in a camel coat, hat perched at a dainty angle, fag dangling out of the corner of his mouth. Drop a trunk full of used fifties on the floor, tapped the side of his nose and whispered, 'you aint seen me, right?' Before twitching off into the distance!

I am going to withdraw forthwith from this conversation because i will be banned if i comment properly on what Sheff Utd have done today. Best of luck to you next season

Let's not forget that you were going to swoop for another of our top-class defenders. Everton might have been a bit hard done by, but you'll get no sympathy from me.

Done or being alledged to have done by the Liverpool Echo, echo, echo, echo?

Another?

Who was the other top class defender?
